I think Lindy Ruff is a good person, but I think his time is past.  Now that Kevyn is out, I think that Lindy (and the entire coaching staff) needs to be next.  My reasoning is this:

  1. Lindy has not been effective in getting the most out of this roster.
  2. I think the team is capable of making the playoffs as is.
  3. I expect Jarmo to make some moves to fill gaps that he sees.
  4. But otherwise, we're basically going to keep 80-90% of the current roster.
  5. The best way to get rid of the stank of losing and reset the team itself is with a new coach and staff.

Fight me.

I certainly didn’t notice any improvement in results when he took over, so he hasn’t earned any more time in my opinion, but I would be very surprised if it happened mid season, unless a very highly respected coach showed up on the market.

What’s so wrong about telling a guy that his mustache needs to go?

That makes him the best man!

Lindy has lost his fastball. I said it a year ago to the day (tomorrow) and I was correct.

With that said, I am letting him ride out the season. Maybe it’s nostalgia, maybe it’s vibes, maybe it is because it is hard to hire a new full staff midseason, or maybe it’s because I don’t want Appert as interim.  It’s probably all of that.
But I’m not putting Lindy out to pasture midseason UNLESS he wants to ride out this last season as a front office advisor.

This team isn’t going anywhere this season as constructed. I need a coaching bloodletting and full offseason coaching search. The time for that is April.

I wouldn't be surprised if it happens within a week.  I think Jarmo knew this was happening and has been making plans.  If his guy is available, why not switch now?  Alternately, if Appert is a possibility for the long term, give him the interim tag now and give him 50 games to prove himself.

Eh, he lived to tell about it.  How many others could've made that claim?  😉

Really hate the idea of giving anyone that is more likely to be a bad coach than not the reigns as an interim coach.  Midseason coaching changes USUALLY work just by giving the players a different voice to be following even when the tactics don't change significantly.  And sometimes those coaching changes that work ONLY work because of that - see Ron Rolston as the poster boy of that situation.

And IMHO Appert is more likely to be a bad coach than a successful one when he's implementing everything from scratch the way he wants it.

Should he be named the HC, truly hope that expectation is wrong.  But would rather they give DeBoer, Leone, or even Prospal or Peca the reigns than Appert.  Heck, would rather have Tortorella as the HC than Appert even though expect that would have a fairly short window of working.  Know Pegula would never hire him, but is Gallant still available and willing?

I understand the hesitation to move on from Lindy and hand it to Appert.  If one of the above are Jarmo's preference, go for it.

Unless Jarmo starts off with a bang of a trade that clearly makes the team better, I think a coaching change is the way.

This.

Much will be known about Jarmo soon.

We're 15th in PP% and 3rd in PK%. Theoretically, that's the result of decent coaching.

In all situations (5 on 5 and special teams), we've had the 4th worst goals against above expected in the league. If we had half decent goaltending we'd be in a playoff spot. If we had good goaltending, we could be looking at home ice advantage in the 1st round of the playoffs. This is with all the injuries.

There's been vast improvements this year. I say we owe it to Lindy to see this through riding Lyon as far as he can take the team.

The only way I'll believe this regime really wants to win is if they don't go the cheap Appert route and go after an established HC whoever that may be. Deboer would be the obvious choice for me but I'm sure alot of teams will be looking at him.

I would like to see an interim coach named.  After the NHL season ends, there will be many more choices available than there are right now.  I would like to see a REAL search made, casting a wide net and not just looking inward or at a person "I've heard of", just because he is a familiar name.

Cleaning house mid season limits your hiring pool, doesn't it?

I don't have a problem with Lindy as the coach of this team.

Its more about the roster than it is the head coach, and in terms of the coaching staff, I think its more of a problem with the assistants as it is him. He's down the list of problems for me.  I'd rather see sweeping changes in the rest of the front office first if I had to prioritize.

With that said, I think maybe you can do a bit better in terms of young players today don't seem to 'connect' or 'want to play for' guys like Ruff, Torts (for that long), Babcock, etc.  Maybe a move that way would help long term?

This team will never make the playoffs with their goaltending. They'd need a massive defensive turn around to the tune of 14% reduction in goals against.

If I were Jarmo I would:

1.  be courting DeBoer.

2.  make finding a goalie my top roster priority, trade one of your better pieces to get one if necessary.

15th in PP with a Norris caliber D-man QBing it, and player with 1 of the 5 best 1 timers in the league.  2 guys that are very good near the net.  And now a guy that can win faceoffs and has a pretty good 1 timer from the other side.  And that 15th rank AFTER going on a 8 PPG in 6 games heater.  There is too much talent for this PP to NOT go on a run here or there.  That unit scores despite coaching, not because of it.  And they oftentimes don't even bother putting 1 of those 2 good net front guys on that top unit.

This team's PP SHOULD be top 10 every year.  It isn't and usually doesn't come close to that because the coaching - entries, lack of movement, etc. is brutally bad.

People still think that '23 PP was all that.  It truly was for 6-7 weeks.  It was awesome.  And then opponents figured it out and it went back to being middling at best the rest of that season, though not quite as horrible as it had been to start that year.

And, have said several times this year that Wilford is doing a very good job with the PK.  Significantly better than expected he'd be able to get them playing.  Good on him.

But, Appert hasn't earned any kudos yet.  They still do a lot of dumb things consistently.  And that consistency is on coaching.
