OT:Golisano donating $50M to what will become Golisano Children's Hospital.

I attended the event that the Golisano school hosted a while back -- was it last year? -- where he announced millions and millions of dollars in gifts to a variety of worthy nonprofits (including colleges and universities) from Western NY and the Finger Lakes region.

And now a big ol' gift to Buffalo's Children's Hospital?

All jokes aside: I have enormous respect for the guy.

Most (damn near all) billionaires do not thusly deal with their money.

I wish more did.

50/50 shot his latest philanthropic endeavor would be helping to support/expand/improve a children's hospital in a location he has ties to or a Canada goose eradication program.  He probably chose wisely.  😉

In all seriousness, it's good that he does have worthy causes that he literally supports very generously.  Darn shame that this area's manufacturing base has taken such a hit through the years as we could use many more billionaires like him with ties to the community.

i’ll still give up a chuckle for his war with Canada Geese. (and, moreover, his campaign to get local government to take it on as a public cause.)

You really can't calculate the generational good in helping kids and families with his generous charitable contribution. People with great wealth can spend their money the way they want. That's their prerogative. He's taken a portion of his wealth and put it to good use. It's a testament to his generosity. He's a self-made man who has given back. Whether he is personally liked or not is irrelevant. What is relevant is that he should be respected for his good deeds.

If he can pull off both, I think he'd qualify for sainthood.

Good news.

But how about Instead of depending upon billionaire philanthropy, we go back to a progressive tax like we used to.

Whether there is a progressive or regressive tax system billionaire philanthropy does wonderful deeds that goes beyond what the government can do.

Wonderful deeds, agreed. I would argue the New Deal far exceeded anything philanthropy ever accomplished.

Adding to what the government can do is better than not adding to it. The scale of Mr. G’s contributions in a number of different formats makes a difference to a lot of people’s lives.

All jokes aside, he is everything Americans want to be:

  • He wasn't born into money.
  • In his first job, he saw an underserved market (payroll and HR services for small companies) and suggested it to his bosses, who rejected it.
  • He went out on his own and started it with $3000 of  his own money.
  • He set his company fees small enough so small companies could afford it, and has kept them reasonable over the years.
  • He didn't turn a profit until five years had passed.
  • His company is still considered a good company to work for.
  • He dislikes both political parties and believes that government is in serious need of reform.
  • He donates a lot of money to worthy causes and endeavors.

Plus:

He saved the Sabres from bankruptcy and possible relocation and was the owner during some great Sabres years (though he had very limited knowledge of hockey)

He married Monica Seles

A winner all around in my books

He admitted he didn't know a hockey puck from a meatball. He never coached toddlers in O-leen.
