You are welcome to rewind the clock 30 years and come up with a super stable organization whose having fireworks over a naminf deal on a place nobody wants.

And what makes it unstable?

Well the owner has been bottom of the league in spending the last 5 years.

Our entire staff is a bunch of yes men that ownership keeps doubling down on.

It's the worst run of ownership in the history of the league.

The owner keeps divesting from other sports ventures not named the Buffalo Bills.

In other words, nothing.

And the "fireworks" are for the sponsor who is giving you lots of money. Are you that offended by a corporate PR event? Have you never worked in a field that sold sponsorships? Obviously Key Bank, the 22nd largest bank in the USA, had no qualms over signing up for another ten years tied to the Sabres.

You don't know much history of the league, do you?

Yes, it is the longest running cluster #### in league history, but honestly not sure it even makes the top 10 in league history of horribleness and definitely not the top 5.

And if current ownership had owned the team back pre-90s, the playoff drought wouldn't be a thing.  A ten year streak of getting past the 1st round might've been eclipsable for this crew, but they wouldn't have come close to 14 years of missing the playoffs in those eras.

You know the drill.  Everything is stupid. Everything is a joke. Everything is a crisis. Blah, blah, blah.

Oh no, Sabres are genius marketers. They are on the cusp of winning the Stanley Cup. It's all coming together. They know more than we do. It's all sooooooooooooo close you can taste it right? Right there. Right in front of you. So close, Like a foot in a crease.

You can’t say the current Sabres playoff drought would not be a thing pre-90’s.  Comparing the current Sabres to teams in other eras is not easy to do.  The ratio of losing teams to playoff teams was drastically different pre-90’s, but look at how ridiculous 14 years is.  Look at what Pegula said, then look at the results.

This is what we know about Pegula’s Sabres.  He said and promised that winning Cups would be the reason for their existence.   He said he would spend money - “drill another well”.

What other owner said these outrageous things and then delivered the exact opposite?  I can go on but you saw the quality of the FO and coaching that Terry brings in, and you know why.   What other team has traded away so many good and great players with nothing to show for it?

Terry bought a team with the 4th all time winning percentage that could not get over the hump.  He made brash promises of greatness,  and then destroyed the brand.  This team could be gone long before the new 10 year Key Bank deal is finished.   No team has had such consistently poor ownership.

Terry should be ashamed of what he has done to the Sabres but I personally don't think he cares.

This was a point of some pride for me when people around here would ask why I was a fan of the Sabres. They would win a lot of games, make the playoffs and go on a few deep runs, at some point in time they would break through. In the early 80’s they had the 3rd best all time winning percentage, behind Montreal and Philadelphia.

To the bolded, why not?

There were 21 teams and only 5 didn't make the playoffs.  Except for the Norris, which conveniently was typically the worst division by far so it was only fitting that they got the extra squad that missed the playoffs, only the worst team in each division missed the playoffs.  They Sabres have not been the worst, nor even 2nd worst at best, team in the division for 14 straight years.  A 14 year playoff drought would not have happened then.  Rarely does this kid say things as being unequivocably true when we can't observe them, but that fact is unequivocably true.

Now, would it have been a disgracefully bad run?  Yes.  Would they have ever made it to the 2nd round?  No data.

But there have been a few versions of this team that personally would take over the 70's era Wings, the Hal Ballard Loafs, any squad (other than the post-mid-90's Sharks) owned by the Gunds except that one miracle squad that merged with Minny to end Moe-ray-all's dynasty because Denis Herron was a horrible puck handler, or the 70's versions of the Caps or Scouts (which in fairness to them were expansion teams in an era when the other teams had no incentive whatsoever to help them overcome being brand new).  In only a handful of years were they in that same category of historically bad squads.  Several times they've been the NHL equivalent of the pre-Allen 21st century Bills - a bad to mediocre team with no chance whatsoever of winning the championship but not often the slow motion trainwreck that the team was during the tank portion of this extended stay in purgatory.

I'll give you $100 if you find me saying this was a "genius" marketing move. I said it was a proper event for your largest sponsor. You know you lost an argument when you resort to making up stuff.

Comparing era’s means you have to make assumptions.  I guess your point is that just by looking at points and W/L record you can argue that they were not as consistently bad as the Golden Seals, the Barons, the early Caps, etc.   They are a different kind of bad.  Pegula had some great players, some future stars, and some really good players and he squandered it.  What other teams have done that?

The way they tanked seems to have created a curse.

This season is going to be a critical one. Another bad one and look for Tage and Dahlin to get anxious.

Mentioning a curse presents an avenue to absolve Pegula from everything that has gone on. Don’t go there. This thing is completely self-made and it’s more than just one bad decision.

They put on a drone show in the sky last night.

It sort of had the fanfare of a Wish NHL hockey club. Which the Sabres are.

Yeah, that was a bit of a "big" moment.  But I mean, it's something and it is also promoting KeyBank which is a pretty large corporation.

reposts and quoted posts. The way twitter goes. It's not important. You have given me pause to think maybe it's time to step back a little.

I just feel so negative about the lack of change, the lack of additions. This is the most pessimistic I've been about a season before a season, and I have been pessimistic over the last number of years quite a bit. I just see zero hope for this year so it comes out in everything. I need to care less.

Yeah, it's easy to get worn down.  It's just perspective. I really want this team to win.  I'll take the Bills winning, but for me the Sabres winning is more important. But, perspective says worry about that which you can change.  It's not easy.
