Sabres were. The 3 teams that were expected to challenge for the playoffs were Buffalo, Ottawa and Detroit. They all failed but Detroit almost got there and did improve to jump over Buffalo. Flyers, were expected to be in the Cellebrini sweepstakes with San Jose and Anaheim.
