I’m not advocating signing bad hockey players 😜

I am not talking about adding specialists. I am talking about adding a middle six player who can produce and never stops grinding.

We should not be using our resources for more players who play like Sam Reinhart or Victor Olofsson. That’s not a shot at either player, or a suggestion to get rid of either player. It’s an acknowledgment that good hockey teams carry a variety of skill sets, and our forwards are weighted toward a specific type and are lacking in others.

You and I are on the same page (again).

Nick Foligno is a guy I really want here; he is literally everything we lack in a player.

Kick tires on Tuch and other similar players besides Virtanen since he’s a bust at this point.

As others have said, we lack any type of variety in our players. Practically our entire team are some variation of finesse players with varying levels of grit. The only real notable exceptions are Borgen and Samuelson. We need a  few players who understand they are Bot 6 and not only accept it but look to play it to the pinnacle of the role. We need an Adam Mair(modern version of course) who knows what he is and doesn’t pretend to be a top 6 forward. But instead hones his craft to be the ultimate role player, he’ll fight, he’ll hit, he’ll block shots and win face offs, he isn’t going to try and deke through multiple opponents, he’ll be a foundational rock for the team when games are bad and help the team stay humble when they are destroying another team. The guy who certainly seems like he could do this is Girgs but he needs to pour a bit more into his Bot 6 persona.

Do you have comparables for the Dahlin contract? Strikes me as ridiculously low.

I'd pick nits with many others, but that's the only one on there that struck me as a total "ain't no way in hell that's gonna happen."

I was trying to figure out a bridge contract for him but when its 4+ mil I get told its too high and this is considered to low.

If it’s a bridge deal it’ll still be $5M+ methinks. If it’s a long-term deal it’ll hopefully land between $6-7M.

Really?  Why?  Do you have comparable?

I would think a 2-3 year bridge would be in the 3.5-4.5 range, and a 6+ year deal would be in the 5.5-7 range.  I’m going to have to go looking for comparable D contracts.

Hard to find comparables because most defensemen of his type end up with long-term deals.

Dang, looks like you were pretty much right, maybe even a tad optimistic.  I dug up these recent comparables.

Werenski - $5M x 3 yrs, 6.14% cap %

Sergachev - 4.8 x 3, 5.89%

McAvoy - 4.9 x 3, 6.01%

Chabot - 8 x 8, 9.8%

Ekblad - 7.5 x 8, 10.27%

Provarov - 6.75 x 6, 8.28%

Hamilton - 5.75 x 6, 8.05%

Ristolainen - 5.4 x 6, 7.4%

Based on these, I’d say something in the 4.75-5.75 range on a bridge, and 6.75-8.25 range on a long term deal.

Can we be done with old and outdated players .

Thanks

I agree with some of what you said.

For the first time in a while, I think the deficiency on this team is on wing.  You want to have some wingers with blazing speed to drive the play into the opponents zone, and you also want some to play a very physical game on the boards. This team doesn't have much of either.  Your center can 'float' or doesn't have to play with much speed if you have the wingers to do it.

I mentioned this in one of the Risto threads, but I really think you want  your physical players on the wing, not on your D-unit.  I want my defensemen to be good at understanding where the puck is going to go, getting to it before the other team does, and then getting it out of my zone.  They can be physical when needed, but I don't want them running opposing players to make a hit if that means they will take out that other player AND themself...and then have a loose puck in your own zone.  D-men PRIMARY job is to get the puck and move it out of the zone quickly.  Now my wingers, when in the opponents zone THOSE are the guys I want throwing checks on the opposing team.

A guy like who Marcus Foligno was for the Sabres...then need someone like that (hopefully a bit better), and to be honest with you, this current team really REALLY could use Zemgus back next year....at Center or even on the wing.

I never know what a poster means when they say “My understanding was ...” because none of us have sources. Did you read that somewhere that you can link to? I’ve heard the report that he has indicated some displeasure with his situation in Buffalo on numerous occasions so I tend to think there’s probably something to it.

No I'm not finding something from last summer. It was reported the Rangers called on Eichel. It has never been reported Eichel asked out.

What's more telling is if you Google this most of the "sites" reporting on it have "blueshirts" in their name.

This is a story being driven by the NYC media and Bob McKenzie

So, what you’re saying is, Jack wants out.

Got it.

re: Dahlin - agree on what others have said on AAv.

Mitts AAV is a little low

Nick’s AAV might be OK but he’s not signing for two years.  His guarantees will be more.

All of your trades are lowballs and unrealistic.  A graduate of the DR school of trade management I see.  Heed the advice of Hoss from last week.

Too much for Reinhart, not enough for Dahlin. With you on Foligno.

Those trades would never happen. Seattle won't give us a 3rd for Thompson. More likely they demand a 3rd for taking Miller. They will take Bjork or Borgen depending on how we protect.  I'd snap up Merzlikins for a 2nd, but I doubt they'd do that.

But Elvis was very down on Buffalo. He's sick of losing. I don't think he'd want to come here.

Asplund is getting penciled in to my lineups for next year.

As he should.  Asplund. Mitts, Cozens and R2 bring effort every night.  We need as many really effort guys as we can get and it's great that all four have decent or better skill.

Not sure how the pieces come together, but those 4 plus Reinhart, VO and Eichel are 7/9 of my top 9 for next season.

One note: We have 13 forwards under control or contract for next season right now with Skinner, Thompson, Bjork, Girgensons, Eakin and KO on the roster.  At least two of these guys need to go to make room for a good 4th line center and a physical scoring middle 6 winger. Skinner is returning and I'd like Thompson back as well, but the other 4 can move on.
