Hired: Tim Murray, GM and Craig Patrick, Advisor

We have a charming, competitive, thoughtful, well-respected icon running the hockey department — who knows people and whose name will open any door.

We have an edgy, aggressive, workaholic general manager whose claim to fame is his comprehensive knowledge of players and his ability to evaluate their worth.

And we have a legendary advisor who is laid-back, thoughtful, has seen it all, and won it all.

I'm not sure if I could have asked for a better team to lead the franchise.

I will join the chorus: Well put, sir.

I actually think the Craig Patrick part of this is bigger news than Murray's coronation.

I'm going to admit that my understanding/knowledge of CP is limited -- a blind spot for whatever reason. (It's this board that turned me from a Sabres fan to a hockey fan ... so, I guess I'll blame the board. )

As other's have noted, this new HOCKEY leadership group, on paper, looks like it can become the best in the league. Pegula is certainly making up for the years he kept Regier on...anyone doubt the guy is a fan? These kind of FO moves are the sort that fans throw out on message boards as fantasy moves. It's real for the Sabres...I hope they live up to the expectations.

Whither those who suggested that Pegula didn't have enough of a hockey brain trust at the top and that his failure to put such a trust in place was suggestive of some fundamental deficiency in his Owner-DNA?

But mostly I just like to use that word: Whither.

Craig Patrick. ...................yes. yes. yes.

X!

HIRE ALL THE SCOUTS

:w00t:

I agree, except I think Tim Graham is also terrible.

I dislike Graham more than anyone at TBN -- perhaps in no small part because I know a thing or two about why he "chose" to leave his gig at espn.com and return to TBN (presumably taking a pay cut and loss of stature in the course of so doing). I won't tell stories out of school, but suffice to say: It's my opinion that the guy is a first class, unmitigated d o u c h e.

You certainly got my attention with the Graham comments. Interesting

THEY BETTER NOT TRADE THE FIRST PICK THIS YEAR FOR A HARD BODY. I'd rather have a young stud that'll last 15 years than a 25-30 year old veteran goal-scorer whose prime is closer to being over

*maybe I'd think it's cool if they trade up in the draft for a number 1 overall if they're at 3rd or 4th.

It looks like we have a GM who in his own words is fairly aggressive and isn't afraid to make mistakes.....

Remember this if someday a prospect like Zadorov, Risto or Gus is sent packing....

If they are traded, it could be a disaster and we lose a good future player, or it could return us a top 10 player in the NHL. There is no point finding a cloud for today's silver lining. Just because he isn't afraid of making mistakes, doesn't mean mistakes will be tolerated. I see no reason to expect him to screw the pooch and trade all our good assets for nothing. After all, this is his first GM job, if he ###### it up he isn't getting another

Beauty, it's official, now let the wild speculation on what's going to happen with the team and UFA's roll on!

Kudos to Dwight on nailing that a triumvirate would be coming in to replace DR. (If someone was posting that prior to him, apologies.)

He wanted PLF, Duds, and IIRC Benning and didn't miss by much. Nailed the 1st, missed on Duds, but who knew PLF & CP were a mutual admiration society? (must have forgot to factor in how far CP's eyes are from his hairline ;)), & Benning apparently was the other finalist. Nice call.

We'll likely end up with two or three first round picks. We can look to move one of the later picks.

Exactly. I'm not trying to put a damper on anything, just saying that if it happens we all should remember what he said from day one. Trading those types of assets is going to be the likely price to improve this team when the time is right.

From Kevin Freiheit:

Here are a few statements from earlier:

"I've had many rebuilds in my career, I was a GM for 23 years, rebuilt a lot of teams, this is going to be fun." -Craig Patrick

"I'm fairly aggressive guy and not afraid to make a mistake." -Tim Murray

"If you're a good team you have to spend to the cap." - Tim Murray

"I see a lot of good people in the organization and a lot of good things happening." -Tim Murray

"You build a team through the draft. Good drafting allows you to trade well...you use free agency to put you over the top." - Tim Murray

"This team is in last place right now; everyone can be traded." -Tim Murray

This is from the press release:

Buffalo Sabres president of hockey operations Pat LaFontaine today announced the team has hired Tim Murray, a 20-year veteran of NHL front offices, to serve as the club’s general manager. The team also announced that Craig Patrick, the longtime general manager of the Pittsburgh Penguins and a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame, has been hired to serve as a special assistant and advisor to the hockey department.

one scenario is better than the other....

Pat Lafontaine, Craig Patrick & Tim Murray or Darcy Regier ??

happy dance !!

I keep picturing the AT&T commercial that has the one guy talking to a table full of kids: "Which is better? The trio of Pat Lafontaine, Craig Patrick & Tim Murray or Darcy Regier ??"

And all the kids yell back, "TRIO!!!"

It's not complicated.

One thing I completely missed: Kevin Devine's future. It wasn't addressed today. No questions about it. Will Murray get his own assistant GM?

It was very surprising to me that our stellar Buffalo media did not ask that question. I suppose I should not be shocked. There were so many questions that were not asked. I was stunned when they asked whether there were any more questions and there was silence.

Craig Patrick. ...................yes. yes. yes. I feel like I've just swallowed a bottle of Viagra.

Full disclosure: I did just swallow a bottle of Viagra.

I'll be calling a doctor. It is going to last more than 4 hours.

Joy.

Very nice.

Stick around a while, willya?

Brooks Orpik is a FA this offseason and fits the whole "players from WNY" idea. Not saying we need or should go after him, though.

Interesting.

I hope the trade deadline is fun. Enough time for Murray to evaluate and decide on a direction

Right on.

I think there will be a fair amount of action.

Indeed -- well done, GoDD.

CP is a pretty strong fill-in for Duds, it would seem.

Gus, Zadorov, and Risto will be THE SABRES CORE. No real point in trading them in the foreseeable future

Well, it depends on what's coming back, innit? What if Edmonton panics and puts Hall or RNH on the market?

There are 1 or 2 true studs that pop loose every year. Darcy never got in the mix on those, IMHO because he didn't want to overpay in a bidding war. Based on TM's statements and demeanor today, things may be different now.

Devine was sitting in row one and Murray said his first job was to talk to Devine and get acquainted with the scouting department.

He also complimented the organization on the quality of its prospects.

I suppose the meeting could have been to put Kevin on notice, but I think it was more about "let's get down to work."

I hope they turn out to be, but if we learned anything from the DR regime it's that no team has a true "core" until they have sustained success together. Marrying himself to a middling core was one of DR's biggest drawbacks.

Could that be the same Kevin Frieheit that I went to high school with? He started his own sabres based website and has been reporting from it for a while...
