Tech people here are going to give me grief for this but I FINALLY got around to swapping out my rented Time Warner Cable internet modem for a Netgear CM600 of my own. And "miraculously" it found me the lost 3 Mbps of download speed I was paying for but not receiving. I'm shocked I tell ya!

Stupid question time:  I have no idea whether I'm receiving what I'm paying for or even what speed I *am* paying for.  Should this matter to me?  Netflix works fine and I don't play the kinds of video games that require a lot of Internet power.  I ask because I've seen comments like this all over the place recently.

If you don't download things from torrent sites and your streaming is working fine, then don't worry. If you're really curious you can google for a download speed test, takes like 10 seconds.

How long have you been renting? I want to calculate a dollar figure you've wasted before fully mocking you :nana:

It's worth at least finding out what you're paying for. I'm not saying it's likely, but if all you do is stream Netflix to one device at a time, you might be paying for more than you actually need. If you have your online account set up, just log in and it should be listed somewhere under services.

Choose NY or Chicago. Should give you a pretty good ballpark figure.

I don't need you to calculate it. My shame is deep.

45.6MB up sounds wrong. 28.9MB down is nice. I just ran mine at work at it was 1.09 up and 14.9 down. That seems to be the norm for standard TWC internet service.

Ran it again; this time 19.7 down and 44.0 up.

I used Chicago both times.

35.9 down, 48.7 up, first test.

41.7 down, 49.9 up, second test.

I have to imagine what is happening is that you have really good internet at work and the DL bandwidth is being used pretty heavily. Although I will note that I've never seen UL speeds that fast. Your work internet must be amazing.

Fios? To my knowledge, that's the only ISP in Buffalo that can sniff those upload speeds. Their base plan is 50 up 50 down, which is very good.

I'm no Al Gore, but I always thought uploading should be slower than downloading. Also, it's Mbps, not MB. Snortsnort.

It is for basically all traditional cable and DSL ISPs. But fiber optics are different, and they're awesome.

Has to be Fios. Even Time Warner's top speed is limited to 5 up.

They need it. Can't adjudicate porn cases w/out LOTS of evidence. :p

Are you saying Paul Cambria and 11 are alter egos? Angry 11 makes so much more sense now.

I thought there was no FiOS downtown.

Maybe not, what do I know? I'm just a suburban dweller. But I honestly don't know of a non-college ISP in the area that can sniff those upload speeds.

That's what I was thinking.

Funny enough, one of the busiest porn practices in the country is down the street.

Maybe your office is benefitting from them making their provider upgrade the block.

Would you kindly stop saying "sniff those upload speeds"?
