Joe Finley signed/called up to Sabres

Per TSN. I thought he already had a contract with the Sabres. Does this mean he's making progress and might be a potential call-up one of these days?

The tweeter confirms that it is a multi-year deal (length and $ undisclosed) for Finley. LINK!

I know he is physically a tank but hows his skating and defensive play? If they are decent maybe he will be a call up or make the roster some day but for now my guess is he is well behind McNabb, Brennan, Pysyk, Schiestal on the depth chart. Hope the kid works hard because a force like he brings could be the type of grit a cup contender needs.

O and Finley was under contract with the Americans not the Sabres so I think that is the difference: "He was signed to an AHL contract by the Rochester Americans on Oct. 4, 2011"

From what I've seen his skating is surprisingly strong.

He's been great. As you say X, his skating is much better than you'd expect for a man that size. Probably not as physical as one would like but he hits. He drops the gloves at any type of "hockey code" infraction. I'd like to think he may have a future in the NHL but the Sabres really have a log jam in the back end in their system. Being a former 1st rounder, it was great insight to take a flier on him. As an Amerk fan, this deal is very encouraging.

Wasn't he already under contract with the Sabres? Well obviously he wasn't, but my first thought was they signed him in case the injury situation got any worse they might need him in an emergency. But if that were the case then it probably would have been just a single year contract.

Everyone likes to compare Myers to Chara, but Finley is actually a closer match physically. Both Myers and Finley are 6'8", but Joe's got a good 25+ lbs on Tyler. If there's any chance of him becoming an NHL defenseman, it's worth the shot.

Edit: maybe 35 lbs (amerks.com has him at 260 lbs)

Myers and Finley. The towers of power. :worthy:

Seriously, can you just imagine those two prowling around the D zone on a shift? :o

"...leads the team with 57 penalty minutes..."

I need to make it to an Amerks game - or better yet, bring the dude up!

I vaguely remember this guy from training camp...can't remember anything on him. But the background reads like one of those possible surprise moves - player goes under the radar not because of skill or effort, but strictly because of circumstance. I need to stop typing...

Seriously. Haha. Totally off topic, but when I play NHL 12 franchise mode, I always draft a tall ass guy -- 6'8, 6'9, 6'10 -- in the later rounds. Their OVRs are awful but the poke check is so important, any pairing with that reach is impossible to play against. Haha.

Wow, look at the size of this guy.

Cool signing, interesting to see what happens to him. I'm not sure the log jam at the backend will last long anyway, some of those guys are still waiting for a shot in there 3rd AHL season.

I agree. This is interesting. I've heard good things about Finley. Sabres seemingly have an embarrassment of riches at D (at least numbers in Bflo and potential in the minor leagues). They still lack pieces up front. Teams around the league are short on defense. Wonder if there are talks going on.

I would put a bet on saying Brennan and Schiestal won't suit up as an NHL regular in a Sabres uniform.

Here's an article from the News from camp, sounds like he's had a lot of injury issues:

We should bring him up to fight Lucic! [/obligatory]

Looks like the Sabres found another legit prospect on the blue line. He's old for a prospect but he may still be legit so long as he can't miss another season with a ruptured artery in his hand.

It's unclear how the Sabres will have room for all their prospects on defense so hopefully they can ship 1-2 out for something we can use. Brennan and Shiestel seem to be the likely candidates.

I don't know about regularly, but Brennan has already played three games.. and I won't be surprised if he plays again too (complete with his straggly 'stache - linky)

Its for a good cause. I've got my porn stash and I can't wait to shave it off. These things get in the way.

I have no problem with the cause. I just wish they came up with a better way to promote it. Has anyone seen Ottawa this month? I wouldn't let a kid go anywhere near that arena.

Because they will be traded or not good enough?

Scheistel before he was injured last season was supposedly playing really well...maybe the best blueliner Portland had going. If you wanted to pick a couple of prospects who won't cut it at the NHL level, I'd start with Crawford, Persson and maybe Biega because of his size. I haven't seen them play much. This is just based on what I have read.

I haven't seen them either, but to me it doesn't feel like Crawford belongs in the same sentence as Persson and Biega. Those two are also a bit older. Crawford's still just a 21 year old second year pro. Then again, if I'm giving him a pass on the 2nd year thing, why don't I do the same for Biega?

I suspect he thinks they'll be traded. I thought Scheistel looked really good in preseason last year the little I saw.

The three you mention do seem to be lost in the numbers game.

"A lot" may not be accurate - and I know everyone is saying that - but maybe "complicated" is. That's a bizarre injury. No other injury but the aneurysm is mentioned.

I feel for the guy, clearly he was on track for a career in the NHL until this injury took over. I'm not sure if there's a greater chance of recurrence with aneurysms, but I hope this guy gets a legit shot - especially with the Sabres. He's what they need.

And if he has skill, they could free up some space in the D with a nice trade package.
