Got a layoff notice Tuesday AM, effective immediately. Official press release from the company stated a reduction in orders and business uncertainty due to the budget sequestration bill passed in January resulted in layoffs in all of their business locations. I knew it was a possibility but I had hoped that by getting to April the risk was reducing. Apparently not. Filed for unemployment yesterday. Our budget does not work on $405/week. And health insurance is a pipe dream right now. I'm worried. I'll have to dip into savings every month to pay the bills. I turned down a job last Thursday. I almost posted about it in this thread. Was an interesting job, it was for a DoD supplier (Budget Sequestration, again) but it is a TINY company and they could only offer about 66% of my current (former now) salary. I politely declined. Yes, I called them back on Tuesday. Unfortunately the hiring manager is out of town. I have no idea if they filled the position since Thursday or if my reconsidering will be well received. Even though I had a job i was still looking for "the right job". My resume is out there. I get unsolicited calls every week, mostly from contract agencies. This option has disadvantages, but there are also many advantages. It was the best thing I ever did. In my 10th solo year now. So to do that, it's probably best to actually talk to a person at the ticket office instead of trying online. Apparently the Red Sox ticket office phone number is only capable of taking one call at a time because I'm constantly getting a busy signal. What kind of ticket office is setup like that? Its only been a couple of days but I went through an intensive 3 month job search back in October. And I continued to look for work (albeit I was cherry picking at that point) since January. it is damned tough around here. I've applied to about a dozen positions already. Problem is, probably 8 of them I am overqualified for. But after my experience from October-January I feel I have to seriously consider those jobs as well. I'm at a point in my career where it is probably for the best if I find my last employer now. Instead I'm looking at a job search that is going to have me taking the first job that comes along. Can you sell some of your food wares (sauces and the like) on the side for extra cash in the interim? We all know you're talented in that area, so maybe you can put it to good use while you're searching. And it makes me feel like a jerk for my complaint, but I'm gonna throw it out there anyhow: In my line of work, the graduate students and post-docs are expected to work long hours, whereas the staff technicians (such as myself) are generally only expected to do a normal 40-45 hour work week. I am an exception to this rule, as I frequently work long hours and come in on the weekend not because I have to, but because I genuinely enjoy what I do and want to help advance our research. And I'm salaried, so the extra hours do not benefit me personally in any way other than the respect I've earned from others for being a hard worker. The last two weekends I was here both days for a total of about 36 hours over those four days. On Tuesday, I get my annual staff review from my boss, and although the comments sections are pretty complimentary, the overall rating on the last page was "performance meets expectations" out of the 5-point does not meet / partially meets / meets / exceeds / significantly exceeds scale. I get this via email so didn't comment right away, but yesterday I asked him about it, concerned he is somehow unhappy with some aspect of my work. As it turns out, the only reason he selected "meets" rather than "exceeds" expectations is that last year the HR folks (whom I have never met and know nothing about biomedical research) gave him a hard time about it. According to them, unless he could say I exceeded expectations for every one of a long list of generic job tasks, many of which do not apply to my specific position, he needs to say that I only met expectations. And here's the best part: they reassured him that whether I met, exceeded, or significantly exceeded expectations, the salary increase is the same. :wallbash: You know, I don't work this hard for external kudos and I don't really give a sh!t what some a$$hole in HR thinks, but I'm so demotivated right now. I love my job and my boss, but this institution sucks big time. Also, I found out the moronic grad student's committee gave him until July 31st and not May 31st to finish up (boo). One interview scheduled for tomorrow AM. It is one of the jobs that I am rather overqualified for, but I'm not gonna be choosy until i have actual choices. And I received two screening calls in the last hour as well. Fortunately, these were both positions that fit my qualifications and interest. A formal interview for at least one of them seems likely.
