“Sabrehood” fanbase moniker

It essentially is.  It was spawned from their in-game PSA announcement with Rob Ray donning a Fred Rogers-esque sweater and talking about how to behave in the rink.  For the B&G games, it's just Ray by himself in Mr. Rayzor's Sabrehood but for B&R games, Marty joins him as an unruly fan.

Slightly cute the 1st 20 or so times they showed but, but it's now been going on for 2 or 3 years and it's starting to get a bit long in the Sabretooth.

The whole practice of giving a fanbase a name has always felt so dumb to me. That’s probably at least partly due to the fact that every single one was “nation” for a while.

Sabre Nation seemed to have a better (though clearly not creative) ring to it.  But guess with the dwindling of the fanbase we're down to just a single neighborhood left.

The apparent Mister Rogers' themed introduction notwithstanding, I always took Sabrehood to be a riff on group-belonging concepts like brotherhood, sisterhood -- a belonging to a group with common ties.

It's fine. Every pro team needs a branded group name to use.

And honestly, there are so many cranky yell at clouds posters here.

I changed my vote from "i don't care" to "i like it" just to balance out the grumps a bit.

Oh, for some reason I thought it came from some of the young players at the time because they all lived right near eachother.

There's another meaning for hood, and it has to be considered given the unfortunate (IMHO) use of mafia for the Bills.

I believe it started with the players I remember Cozens wearing a sweatshirt that had it on there during an interview. And one of the Sabres beat reporters mention she was surprised that the merchandise became available to the fans.

I assumed "hood" referred to the urban "neighborhood" pop culture use of the word.   Especially since there were references to Bills Mafia in the thread.  

Sabrehood, as in brotherhood, is fine with me.  

The Bills Mafia backers say it was meant to refer to family.  The Italian word for family is "famiglia", not mafia.  Mafia refers to organized crime groups and that is a kind of "family" that most Italian-Americans have no connection to.   the word mafia was most likely derived from uncomplimentary words to suggest male swagger and boldness. 

I am of Italian descent but not offended by Bills Mafia.  The few family elders that I have left don't care for it and shrug it off.

All these terms are silly. Especially team "owners" and "twelfth mans" that are closest in my football world. Those two are the worst.

 

But Sabres neighborhood fits.

They're not a nation as that would imply global reach and acknowledgement. A mafia implies some sort of above-the-law approach and strong local power dynamic or inducing fear of reprisal.

Nope, they're a small local residential area just hoping to go about their business without any sirens or loud neighbors. Pleased as punch they didn't get murdered. At least they've got that sandwich to look forward to. 

And if Tuch walks, the team misses the playoffs, and Dahlin and TNT demand trades -- then next year they can be the Sabres Assisted Living Home.
