There are a lot of teams with the cap space left for Rust and Rakell, and not many other choices of that caliber on the market available for futures.

Adding either would elevate my hope meter, but I have a strong suspicion demand will escalate the price beyond anything Adams will be willing to pay.

Many teams are not cap strapped like the post Covid years. KA’s failure to weaponize his extra cap space for 5 years is the straw that broke my camel’s back. Whether adding for a playoff run or taking on salary for picks/prospects, those days are gone.

Yep.

Billionaire owners and ran one of the lowest team salaries in the league every year but the 1st year Adams was the GM (and apparently this year too; but will wait until all the dust settles to say that for sure) and never ONCE took on a bad salary for a prospect or a pick nor acted as the intermediary in a 3 way trade to take on salary for a prospect or a pick.

And every single time that cap space that they hoarded every year evaporated the day the regular season ended.  Wouldn't it have been nice to have 2 more 2nd round picks, 1 more 3rd and another Savoie that could've been moved for players to help today?

But courtesy of buying out Skinner in a season they didn't have to and in a season they didn't bother replacing his salary, they're running with $4MM less cap space than they could've and next year they run with $6MM less cap space.

Soooooo frustrating.

They may get lucky one of these years; maybe even this one.  But planning on getting lucky when you aren't Leonardo DiCaprio probably isn't the best plan.

Agree with everything but the Skinner part. It’s true they did not need to buy him out last year. But, the buyout cost this year and the next 3 years is nearly identical to what it would have been had they waited until this year to do the buyout.

The way that this “rumor” is worded is amusing. It’s so non-committal on so many levels.

I thought that was pretty funny too.

That broad of a net would likely be true for 80% of players.

Didn’t he come back to the organization years later?

Kind of.

Apparently after playing in Europe for a few years, he came back stateside and worked out a deal to sign an AHL deal with the Amerks.  He played the next year for Binghamton.

And he’s somewhere in the organization right now, if I remember correctly.

Robertson staying in Dallas?

He is still under contract for this season at 7.75mil so hard to tell. Dallas had to clear a bit of cap just to get under for this year. They had 8 D under contract as well,  it was a logical clear and puts them about 2million under the cap now. They may try to keep him if his salary is around 10mil but I think if he wants closer to Rantanen's 12million they could move him.

This could also open up enough space for them to do something like move Robertson for players that make more than his 7.75 salary as they would be able to move him and add back 9.5mil in cap roughly.

Basically I don't know haha but wanted to write all this out as a thought exercise.

They also have 2Cs making over $8m a season in Hintz and Johnston. Maybe they flip one for Byram? Not sure as they have a lot in the top 6 F talent but not much on top 4 D talent.

I'm not sure why they'd trade for Byram with Harley and Heiskanen there.

The price to dump a 3.75mil defender is a apparently that guy and a 2nd round pick

Thought Clifton already set that market.
