New Defense Pairings 10/9

My interpretation of Dahlin-Clifton is that they were all but penciled in as an opening night pair based on how they'd fared throughout training camp. Obviously, that didn't pan out in an actual game setting:

Granato has emphasized he will mix up the defensive pairs depending on certain situations. We saw him do it against Columbus on Wednesday night. But since the start of practice, Rasmus Dahlin and Connor Clifton have played together. This would be a big step up in role for Clifton, who got minimal chances to play in Boston’s top four during his career with the Bruins.

“I put the two of them together as a pair a day or two before camp and you could have put any righty with any lefty,” Granato said. “But then they were communicating really well, which is key. They’re talking after each rep and getting on the same page and Rasmus is helping Connor acclimate to how we want to play or re-acclimate to how we want to play. Connor is communicating to him how he sees the situation. So why would I change that right now? There’s a lot of good happening.”

What happened to VO? Wasn't his defensive play really good a couple years ago? I remember thinking that, combined with his sniping ability, would make him a force on our team. Instead, he's behind a one trick pony and not really a part of the future.

I don't recall his defensive play ever being very good, it seems the book on him has always been that he's a one dimensional player (PP specialist) and you always heard about him needing to improve his game away from the puck.

Once Tage developed into the PP one-timer threat, Oloffson's primary contribution was put to the wayside. I've always wanted to see an extended look with him and Tage on the boards in the PP - if the PK wants to take away Tage then VO should be open for business but the few times I remember seeing them out there together it never seemed to work.

When Savoie is healthy, I wonder if he gets some games in place of VO if he starts the season again with his liabilities outweighing his goal scoring.

When Savoie is healthy I want to see him on the same line with Benson.  They've been very in sync in the WHL.

Greenway like him as a person but he will be on the 4th line or press box by December.

He will have to earn his ice time and position for sure.

I do.  He had a pretty good two-way game going before he was injured.  When he returned it took a long time to get his shot back, plus he wasn't playing the full 200 foot game anymore.  If it was the lingering effects of the injury then possibly he'll look better this season with a fresh start.

It would be unwise to repeat the vo and Mitts pairing.

A fully healthy Mitts and a fully healthy VO might work, especially if VO actually backchecks a bit.
