OT - Steve Jobs has died

I guess this is really no surprise. Anyone who has seen him lately knows he was pretty sick.. RIP...

There were a lot of signs. Stepping down as CEO, maintaining a name-only presence on the BoD, not showing up at all for the media event yesterday ... if he had been in ANY way capable of making it to that, he would have. Apple was his life, his passion ... he made the right move in stepping down and appointing Tim Cook, but the no-show yesterday was alarming.

And, of course, now we know why. Ironic that I was actually tweeting about trying to upgrade to iOS 5 gold master when I read a few tweets below and saw the news.

Ipods, The layout of both major computer operating systems, The Pixar Movies from Toy Story to Cars, proving to the corporate world that aesthetic design is of at least as much importance as function and quality. This guy is up there with Thomas Edison and George Eastman for the highest impact, most visionary Americans in history.

Ironic that I sat in a doctor's waiting room today watching It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia on my iPod as I was waiting to be checked for cancer.

RIP Steve

Good luck to you.

And RIP Steve, a true visionary and customer service oriented CEO, perhaps the best at both in our lifetime...

Bought my first Mac in 1989. Never bought a computer built by any other company since then. Even in the mid-to-late-90s, when Apple was losing every battle. (The computers are just too easy to use, and they were then, when not everyone knew how to use one.)

Jobs came back, and freaking raised Apple to wow, whatever.

The guy had a passion, lived it, loved it. God Bless.

Not sure about sudden. Rumors of cancer for years and you could se him losing weight and looking sick for the last couple of years but you're right. It is sad.

Not rumors... Widely known that he had pancreatic cancer. It is largely considered incurable...

Hopefully those results turn out in your favor.

Thanks. Hopefully it's nothing. I have a mole that turned black so I made an appointment with my family doctor. Between scheduling the appointment and the actual thing, it changed back to its normal color. The doctor said it was just a bruise BUT he saw a different freckle/mole that I didn't even know I had (on my back) that he didn't like and now he's sending me to a specialist to have it looked at.

The bruise may turn into a blessing as I never would have known I had this other thing.

I hope it's nothing serious, and I certainly wish you the best.

On a different note, maybe it's because I'm a young college kid with a ton of immature friends, but I was kinda blown away by the amount of people on my facebook who were making jokes at Jobs' expense last night. One guy even went as far as to say he got too much credit for the iPod, iPhone, iPad, etc. I don't get how anybody could have bad things to say about him... he's done more for our world than any athlete ever has, that's for sure.

And the guy is like solely responsible for TOY STORY!!! Come on, show some respect, facebook friends.

Gallows humor is all the rage.

As for the credit, Apple's (and by extension Steve Jobs') skill isn't really innovating, everything they've done has been done before. There were MP3 players before the iPod, smartphones before the iPhone, and tablets before the iPad. Apple refined the devices in such a way that the average consumer wants them, but since many hadn't seen the predecessors they think Apple invented the stuff. It's similar to Microsoft, there's very little they do that hasn't been done before as well.

I'm no particular fan of Apple, although I once was. In the last few years, they've gone from just making 'Insanely Great' devices and software to suing various competitors over BS patents and trademarks. They're trying to stop various companies from selling devices because they look vaguely like and iDevice. When you don't innovate, litigate.

Take a look at the sketches and ask yourself, how are you supposed to make a phone or tablet that *doesn't* look like a rectangle with a screen in the middle.

Manipulated evidence as well.
