Rick Rypien

Thats bush league by the canuck,as the announcer said all they did was clap. I could see the altercation if a beer showered him or the kid spit on him.

Even then, the league would be all over Rypien. The one thing we don't know is if the kid said something to him, but either way, that is some very damning evidence right there.

Agreed, the league should do something to send a message but will they?

The league doesn't care what the players do to one another but in a sport desperate to increase it's fanbase, it doesn't want to come off like the NBA where players have free reign to go into the stands. I say they throw the book at him.

I can't remember the last time something like this happened in the NHL but there have been a bunch of incidents with players and coaches crawling into the stands to go after fans--- including quite a few involving the Sabres. Much more violent than that, too.

Atleast hockey will be back on ESPN tomorrow...

In all seriousness, i can't believe this happened. When I first heard about it, i figured the fan acted like an absolute drunken tool and got what was expected, and even still as someone pointed out, the league would go harshly towards the player. But, to me, the fan did nothing at all. Clapping? Big deal. These are paid customers and are allowed to cheer.

I do think the league will send a message because this kind of behavior is a major no-no. I don't think a full season is warranted, as people do make mistakes and should receive a second chance, so i think 25 games should be fine.

Rick, this is how it's done, son.

In all seriousness, I wonder why they were escorted out after the incident. They better have been asked to give a statement and then move to a box. If they were "kicked out", that's more embarrassing than the player hitting a teenager.

Yeah, but in the instances I remember, the fan(s) did something to "earn" the extra attention (EDIT--as in the vid that corp posted). All this guy did was clap. Rypien definitely crossed the line for no reason at all. I'd like to see him gone for the year, but he'll get 15 games.

And I hope that the Wild are smart enough to apologize to the guy and his friend and to comp them some tickets; there was no cause to kick them out of the game.

Didn't any of the ushers see the kid din't do anything but clap or say a few words? I'd be pissed spending that kinda money on those seats and have to leave half way through the game. His fine should go to buy those dudes seasons.

Stadium security is never really interested in finding out what actually happened. The Wild staff pointed this kid out and bam he gets removed no questions asked. If i were him id surely be calling the team this morning and explaining what happened to ask for new tickets. Thats bush league.

Minneapolis Star-Tribune is reporting that the fans were relocated to seats along the glass. Also, numerous sources (including that one) have Manny Malhotra trying to explain his teammate's behavior by claiming the fan tried to get physical with Rypien. C'mon, Manny; even Karl Rove wouldn't have tried to put that much English on a story.

Is there an app for this? You generally take about 80% off the conventional wisdom on the number of games some idiot is going to be suspended for.

Coli will look at the replay, see that the guy's hands were beyond the glass a little and pretty much buy the "we have to defend ourselves" argument.

Eight games.

They'll throw the book at him. Even if the kid said something completely over the line (which there will never be proof of), there is no defense for Rypien's actions. This is the last kind of attention any league wants and they have to step up and make a big statement about it. This one won't be anything less than 20 games. I'm sure it'll be a very quick response from the league too.

meh. Am I the only one who wishes this would happen to me? What a great story to tell. I like the lady in the next row laughing the whole time.

Hope he has a good lawyer. He'd be in a neck brace and crying uncontrollably this morning if he was my client, not that I'm a lawyer or anything.

If he actually does that then Rypien should have gotten his money's worth and pounded him.
