I saw the Manchester Monarchs win Sunday afternoon to stay three points ahead of the Pirates in their division. It should be an interesting race to the end of the regular season! Monarchs are quick and skilled, but without much toughness. Their style reminds me of the Sabres over the past several years - it often works in the regular season but not built for the playoffs.

Pirates only have themselves to blame

Published on: 21st February, 2011 by Chris Roy

Portland, ME – It was a good news, bad news day for the Portland Pirates.

The good news was the Pirates gained a point against the idle Manchester Monarchs for the top spot in the Atlantic Division.

The bad news was the Pirates played in their minds their worst game of the season in a 2-1 overtime loss to the Connecticut Whale in front of 5,574 at the Cumberland County Civic Center in a rare Monday matinee.

Nice to see the Pirates chugging along with their #1 netminder and goal scorer up with the Sabres.

Also, interesting to see, just like their parent club, they hold a bunch of games in hand on the team they are battling with for playoff positing.

Nice to see Luke Adam getting back into a groove down there. I wonder what his numbers would look like this year if he'd spent the entire year in the AHL.

David Leggio is playing well down there in goal (17-4, 2.57 GAA, .918 save %). Kid is a great story. From Williamsville originally, he went undrafted out of Clarkson and has kicked around the ECHL, AHL, and Finland before signing with the Sabres on a two-way contract last summer.

It is hard not to root for the hometown guys!

He went to St. Joe's, so I have no problem rooting against him. :D

Portland could very well be playing down as many as three players tonight when they face the defending Calder Cup champions, the Hershey Bears. The Pirates took to the ice this morning’s skate without the services of Mark Parrish and Luke Adam, who were both recalled to the Sabres this morning.
