Then it wasn’t long before they scrapped that and started mixing and matching again.

It was only the first game, but I saw nothing to get excited about, except for maybe the interest in getting physical.   I got bored with the game and started surfing on my iPad.

The new special teams coach didn’t make an impact.

You build continuity over time.  There is no way to know what the best line combinations are just from preseason.  You  are not going to build continuity in one game, especially when regular players are out with injuries.  When Benson and Greenway come back there will be changes to get them in the line up.  

By playing Geertsen he enabled line swapping because there is no way that guy is good enough to play a straight 4th line shift.  He was out there for the first goal against.   But with Rempe playing Ruff chose Geertsen over Kozak, those are the players he had to work with.   If Geertsen didn’t play and Rempe went after our players then Ruff would have been criticized for that too.  

Lindy is taking some criticism, much of it deserved, but line combinations for the first game is not a valid complaint.   They got stopped by a fantastic goalie and their PP was ineffective, and they started the game way too slow.    

There is no new special teams coach.   The coaching staff is the same as last season.  The power play is still looking bad.  Seth Appert runs the PP.

The Sabres best chance to hang in there and keep the fans interested, was to come out this season hot, score some PP goals, get reasonable goaltending and maybe be above .500 after 10 games.  It's disappointing again.

A note on Rempe. Yes, he is big, but...  he didn't go running anyone. He had 5 hits in 9:30. He went to the front of the net as he's supposed to, and he had the speed and angle to get to Krebs and flatten him against the boards -- forcing the puck loose for what turned out to be the insurance goal. The puck went back to the point, over to Soucy for the walk-in on Lyon. No assist, but Rempe made the play that sealed the game. 

By contrast, Geertsen didn't go running anyone either. He played 4:26 with 2 hits. I checked it again, Geertsen was -1, but blameless. It was all a Ryan Johnson failed clear (like a failed lob shot exit after the icing) and good Rangers keep, then Bryson getting outworked by Lafraniere. 3rd pairing defensemen made mistakes after an extended shift and an icing.

my anger and disappointment with the incompetence of the Sabres franchise is currently plateaued. i will reach a new level when those as*holes appoint Appert as HC (for he has been anointed and it has been preordained).

Question for you all:  I started watching at the beginning of the second period, and noticed that Zucker was taking a TON of abuse.  Did he do something in the first that irritated the Rags?

I think it was in the 2nd, but he went to the net and gave Shesterkin's glove a couple whacks as he was covering the puck. We'd have wanted him dead if he had done that to UPL Lyon Comrie Hutton Anderson. We respected Anderson.

IMHO the only way  Appert is HC next year is if Lindy gets canned during the season, Appert takes over (which would happen) and leads Sabres to a remarkable run.  If not, a new GM comes in and selects his coaches and staff.

If it's the play I'm thinking of, the response against Zucker was disproportionate.  But ok.

I guess I lack confidence that Pegula has any appetite for moving on from Adams. And Appert is Adams' guy.

He was crashing the net all night and Schneider didn't like it.  Neither did Borgen later in the game.   Borgen took a penalty for ripping his helmet off.  

Zucker was a bright spot and he played with emotion.  Very few others did.
