I find it weird that the team hires the tv crew.

I wonder if that happens in any other market. I really don’t know.

Good question.  Pretty sure that tradition goes back to Ted Darling having the opportunity to either be a Channel 7 (IIRC) or a Sabre employee when they got the broadcast contract.  He decided to stay with the Sabres so that should Channel 2 get the contract back (or it go to 4 or even 29) he'd still be the voice of the Sabres rather than switching to local sports or Dave Thomas' replacement.

By making them employees they can control the messaging so the organization and players don’t get criticized. It’s fortunate that there are still some local reporters like Hamilton and Harrington who are willing to give objective analysis.

I feel like every team is going to hire the broadcast crew across all three leagues. Maybe not in the biggest of markets, but these broadcast exist specifically for the teams.

It's generally the case that the broadcasters are employees of the team.  That's not just the NHL, it's most of the team sports in North America.  I think the NFL is the exception for television broadcasts but they still employ the radio broadcast employees.

I like Duff.  I'm not sold on Dunleavy.  But Duff is fine.

Dunleavy is terrible...Bills/Sabres have to have the worst PBP tandem in pro sports.

Sad when we used to have one of the best tandems in Ted Darling/RJ and Van Miller for such a long time.

Literally went from 3 Hall Of Famers to trash overnight almost.

I'm just going to go out on a limb here and say no one will really notice any meaningful changes to the broadcast. Ray will just be Ray, Dunleavy will still be himself and same old same old.

Interesting view from the outside, The Hockey Guy on YouTube is of the opinion that Rob Ray is the best color guy in the NHL.
