Devon Levi signed to a 2 year 812k contract extension

1- or 2-way deal is about contracted salary only. This means nothing in terms of where he will play.

As @shrader says he remains waiver eligible and the team is behaving like the plan is to start him in Rochester.

one-way deal just means he gets paid his NHL money when in the A, right?

that would help explain, perhaps, why it's less than a million in NHL dollars.

Yes, it appears (and has appeared since Lyon was signed) the plan is for Levi to get the bulk of the work in Ra-cha-cha this year and be available to bump up should either of the other 2 falter or get injured.

And his contract is low enough that none of it will count against the Sabres cap while in Ra-cha-cha.  So, he might've been able to get a higher annual salary if the 1st year were a 2 way deal; but this likely would net him more money ove the 2 years.

It almost feels like Kevyn has had the realization that Levi might not be the generational goalie he traded Sam Reinhart for.  Levi truly has no leverage because he just hasn't shown yet that he is an NHL goalie.  Even his biggest backers are recognizing the maybeness of his talent.

What are you basing this on? Did Levi not just finish a terrific season in the AHL? Before he got roughed up by Laval he had a 2+ game shutout streak vs Syracuse.

Levi is still on schedule.  There's no need to rush him. Take a breath.

My point is Peterka didn't have any leverage either.

A competent GM would've told him "You're part of our plan moving forward, we'll give you a fair offer which you either sign, choose arbitration or sit out.  We're absolutely not trading you unless we're offered a deal we can't refuse."

Instead we got "Oh dear, you're not happy we haven't made the playoffs in a while?   You poor thing, we'll trade you ASAP!!"

Worse, he was not happy because he saw no signs that the Sabres FO were committed to winning.   The first things he said after he signed with Utah were comments on his new teams commitment to winning.

I'm as nervous as any Sabres fan about Levi's final form -- goalies are so weird and Adams is a funking doofus -- but this is fair. The guy should get the entire year in Roch to continue to build his game.

Wait, after Levi was acquired, they threw him in there at the end of that season, including several consecutive starts, and he looked very good.   What has happened since then that has him stuck in Rochester?   Two years ago, it looked like UPL had blossomed so Levi was kept down to get more action.

What is Levi lacking now that is keeping him in Rochester despite looking so good in Rochester?

Oh, I'm not writing him off.

Goaltenders should not be rushed. Levi is very much on a Ryan Miller trajectory and he spent 3 years, I think, with the Amerks. This will be year 3 for Levi.

A young goalie with limited scouting. After a little, the other teams now have their book on him. It’s growing pains.

So what does he need improvement on.

I do remember Biron getting thrown into a game at 18 where he didnt react and move his glove until after the puck was in the net.

The same as many young players - consistency.

THIS IS SO SABRESY!! THEY OVERPAID!! WHAT A JOKE!!!

Am I doing this right?

Not good enough. You need more practice reps to shed your  positive reputation. Repeat after me: They suck, they suck. Say this 500 times a day, steadily increasing the mantra to 1000 times a day. You will then earn your Aud Room ribbon.🙃

Clearly I am concerned about that as well which is why I like this Maybe deal... he didnt go out an commit 2 or 3mm a season on a maybe... this buys us sometime to find out. SO to your point I think that is exactly what Adams is doing... and I will even give him credit for that.... not much else but for that.... it to me makes sense.

I want to see Levi have a good summer of training and come to camp to win a job, making the goalie position better than it has been in years.

This contract is perfect for KA to run his “hopium” roster back, Levi can cook another year, getting a few looks during injury stints.

For that matter, UPL is still on schedule.

The “Sabresy” thing about this, is that 2 years ago Levi was gifted the starting spot. At that time if you had told fans that his next contract would be 2x$812k, and that he would headed to a 3rd year in the AHL, most would have laughed.

There is, almost always, a “Sabresy” angle. Don’t limit yourself to contract term or AAV in your search.

The most important thing about the Levi contract is he is RFA (arbitration eligible) at the end of the term. If he's on the best potential path, threr's still a chance to lock him up long-term (if he wants to be here, obviously). If Adams is still GM in 2027 (which frankly, even I find hard to believe and I love suspending my disbelief), it's a chance to trade Levi for another AHL-level goalie with 1 year of term before going RFA.

I’m a little surprised that he signed for more than one year. I have a hard time seeing what that extra year earns from his point of view.

You mean, other than eight hundred thousand dollars?
