Calling a 3rd round pick a bust?

Brayton Wilson needs to calm down.

Well over his three-year ELC, Brycen Martin managed just 21 games and zero points.

With the Amerks. 😜

He barely made a dent in the ECHL. If a 3rd rounder can be a bust, it was him.

Good for them that they found people willing to let them hang onto the dream of being professional athletes for 1 more season.

The used car lot (or whatever place of business they find themselves in for their 2nd phase of adulthood) will still be there when they're ready.

He’s a bust. He was always a bust.  He was a bust on draft day.

Any draftee that doesn’t make the NHL is a bust, just some busts are more hurtful (Nylander) to the organization then others.

Nylander isn't a bust until the pieces he brought in flame out.

Nylander is/will 100% be a bust when/if he doesn't pan out. The fact that our current GM was able to flip him for a prospect that will hopefully not be doesn't change that fact

No. Nylander will only not be a bust if he makes Chicago’s roster and stays in the NHL for a few seasons.  However as a top 10 pick he should have already made the NHL and be a contributing player.

Brayton talking about Brycen.  There needs to be less options for names.

There's also a Brayden mentioned.

Well, wait a second. A "bust" is, by definition, a prospect who didn't play at a level commensurate with where the player was selected.  3rd round picks become NHL players at about a 30% rate. Thus, 70% of 3rd round picks never become NHL players. By extension, a player chosen in the 3rd round who does not become an NHL player is performing in a manner consistent with the super-majority of his peers. That kind of prospect/player is not a bust.

I'd suggest that the word you wanted there is -- at most -- something more along the lines of "detriment" or "disappointment."

Filatov (sp?) as chosen by CBJ in the top-10 was a bust, for example.

I hate the bust label in general because way too much plays into it.  If we are labeling any pick who doesn't make it to the NHL as a bust, that means we are calling Alexei Cherepanov a bust.  That's something I can never sign up for.

I agree with it being relative.

Daigle played 616 NHL games and registered 327 points and I'd certainly call him a bust.

At least no one picked almost immediately after Martin has had much of an impact in the NHL.

Expand it to look at that entire round as a whole.  It's not pretty.  People trying to pin that on any one single team are going to tear something with how far they're stretching.

Edit: And another interesting one, look at the three guys Tampa took prior to Point in that draft.

Any fan that think all players who are drafted are expected to carve out a NHL career are sadly misinformed, not to mention have massively unrealistic expectations that never come to fruition.

As you know, the chance of making it to the NHL are not great for anyone outside the first round. As you know the chance of actually having a good career (over 400 games) is even less. As you know the chance of having a pretty long career (over 700 games)  in the NHL is a rare and special thing.

A 3rd round draftee player who didn’t carve out a career in the NHL is quite common actually. As you know.

If calling every player a bust who didn’t make the NHL a career makes you feel better, so be it. Seeing as the percentage of draftees who actually do it so low, labeling a “bust” is not accurate at all however.

But every draftee has a chance to be an NHL player, otherwise why draft them?  Each year teams draft arguably draft the best 210-220 non-NA pros/juniors/amateurs in the world.  These 18-20 year olds are the best of the best and all have a legit shot at the NHL.  If they didn't we wouldn't have the following % appear at least once in the NHL from 2009 to 2013 drafts (I stopped here because guys from 2014 forward are still working their way up in some case) of 55.2%, 50%, 59.2%, 49.3% and 47.4%, and you wouldn't have 7th rd picks like Dzingel and Palat star in the league.  Yes the odds decrease each round of a player carving out even a 2 year NHL career, but guys still do (see Dzingel and Palat), but so what.

If 50% of the kids can get at least a cup of coffee in the NHL, then the other 50% are busts.  It's that simple.

Bust is a really negative adjective indicating a failure to meet expectations.  3rd picks are expected to not make the NHL.  They arent busts, no matter how much you want to contort the definition.

In fact, it tends to render the word meaningless.

Happens every draft.  Sometimes it's the Sabres, sometimes it's someone else.
