What does it say about me that, despite being a grown man with a family, a job and a house, during Jon Snow's fight with the head white walker, I yelled at the TV, "That's right, ######! Valerian steel!"?

It says you're a bigger nerd than I thought you were. I mean that as a compliment!

I think the Sansa outrage from two weeks ago is because they've gone to the well a few too many times now with rape as a plot device.  The writers sometimes revel in making the show "misery porn" and at some point it's offensive how these guys basically default to "rape mode" every time they're out of ideas for how to up the stakes in the show.  Plus to even get to that scene, they had to make Littlefinger do something completely inexplicable in just dropping Sansa off to the Boltons and then dashing off.  So it took some pretty bad writing just to get to the point where they could use rape as a storytelling crutch for the millionth time.

Anyways, the last two weeks before last night were pretty lousy and had me worried that the show was losing it in the post Storm of Swords era.  Then last night was probably one of the best episodes they've ever done.  Every scene in the first half was concise and great (even the Arya scenes) and the whole second half in Hardhome was terrific -- possibly the best battle scene they've done.

I can appreciate why a number of critics and fans are PO'd about the rape scenes -- they are by their nature disturbing.  FWIW, they don't really bother me and I don't think they are gratuitous -- bottom line is that Westeros is a pretty terrible place and rape is prevalent, just like murder and the other sociopathic behaviors that are depicted frequently on the show.  Just my opinion, of course.

As for whether Littlefinger leaving Sansa with the Boltons was inexplicable -- not sure about that.  From his perspective, if his plan of having Sansa there to be rescued by Stannis works, it's a home run for him.  He also needed to return to King's Landing to meet with Cersei (who is still Queen Regent or Dowager Queen or whatever -- point being that the Lannisters are still in charge, albeit shakily so) and he obviously couldn't bring Sansa along.  If it doesn't work -- while he may desire Sansa physically, he's a coldhearted bestid -- so I'd expect him to shrug his shoulders and move on to his next plot.

(Holy mackerel, TBPhD is right about me.)

The problem was for that the scene was about Theon and Ramsey and not at all about Sansa.  If you are going to have rape be a plot device and then have the woman it happened to not impacted by it, that's unethical.  Again, Jamie loses his hand and we see the emotional consequences of that. Sansa gets abandoned and raped and la dee da, moving on.  It's weak and lazy writing.

Does she seem emotionally impacted by it? Have they written that into her character and used it to change her character?

Well she begged Theon/Reek to rescue her... So yes.

The idea of what you're saying is right, but that part is a little off.

Terrible news. My hookup to HBO Go is no longer useful as my recently divorced buddy just moved out of the house and his ex cancelled HBO to save money. Of course this timing comes midway through GoT after what everyone described here as the best episode yet.

Guess I just have to pony up and pay for HBO just for the last few episodes. :death:

Just find it online for free. Sites like couch tuner, watch tv links, and watch tv series have just about every show known to man available to stream. Just make sure you install adblock plus for whatever browser you use first. I cancelled Showtime a couple years back after Dexter ended and I still watch Shameless (an awesome show that airs on Showtime) every week when it's in season. Most time the newest shows are available to stream within an hour or so of it airing on tv.

I love Dexter and Shameless as well.

I am usually very nervous about those "watch tv" sites as they are riddled with bugs and malware and the quality isn't usually worth it. I specifically remember the firstrowsports site that got shut down a whole back. Is there any one in particular that you feel most confident about?

Gents -- pls don't discuss pirate feeds on this board.  Thanks.

To those decrying the Sansa rape scene as gratuitous or otherwise lacking, I urge you to consider that scene in light of Sansa's earlier declarations to Ramsey's stable girl (I forget her name) who tried to intimidate Sansa while bathing her. When viewed in that context, the rape scene is very much about Sansa and makes perfect literary sense. Viewed through that prism, I would argue that rape, because of the sheer horror of it, was a powerful vehicle to illustrate her conflict and set the stage for her future resolution.

It would've been better if she had the seen with Myranda AFTER the rape.

To the bolded: Sansa's character has been there before several times.  I want to see her taking more agency in her arc.  So far this season, the most she's done is give the Boltons some snarky looks and beg Theon for help.  Woooopeeee.  At this point in the books, she's:

(TWoW Alayne sample chapter spoiler)

enjoying herself for the first time since her father's death and manipulating people.

Ugh, why are we still talking about this scene after they finally had a kickass episode.

Great, so somebody's coming back from the dead. Now I'm even more curious.

I don't think they'll be depicting that plot point in the show.  I'm super excited to see Drogon resurrected by the white walkers as a bone drake though.  Still has to be killed by Tyrion of course.
