It isn't really unique, the Bills before Pegula had many saying they couldn't compete financially and until Josh they couldn't compete on the field.

The Sabres used to be able to attract and sign good players, but the sabotaged themselves tanking to be horrible and win the McDavid sweepstakes.

Its more about having ownership and management willing to do what it takes to compete and find great players. Vegas isn't great just because of their location, they are how they are because they were given a solid base to start from and are willing to bend the rules and spend to do what it takes to win. The Sabres do not have that, they won't work the rules to their advantage and do what it takes to get better. They would rather hope that they have hit on all their prospects and will just one day put it all together and be great

Not quite correct - The Bills could always compete financially because all 32 teams divide TV revenues equally which is the majority of the owners profits

Two things: The NFL is the most "socialist" of all the pro leagues. So even Buffalo is on an even footing with New York and LA. Buffalo gets players now because of Josh Allen, but there are still some players that won't play for Buffalo because of the reputation of the city.

The Sabres definitely hurt themselves, but a lot changed in the NHL since those days when the Sabres could sign big names. For a long time NHL players could only play in cold places, with LA being the exception. Since then teams have been added in very sexy locales, many of which are friendlier to high earners where you can play golf year round.

We need this re-pinned.

In support of the re-pinning, I post here a  photo taken 6/30/2025 that just infuriates me.

Our team's owner thinks he knows puck, folks. And that is why the Sabres continue to struggle.

If I were Tim Hortons, I would sue them for defamation.

That photo makes me want to punch palm trees.

It's a photo of perfect ineptitude.

Websters has officially removed the definition of incompetence from its book and replaced it with this picture.

He can’t believe he signed up for this.

Probably because he is next in line for the job, might be rethinking it seeing how KA can do what he is doing and still have his job though. Might take longer then he thought.......

As a long time Sabres fan I would not want to be a fly on the wall and listen to that clown show.
I can’t imagine a long time, competent GM being forced to listen.

The photo is telling isn’t it? The body language is pretty shocking for a new hire in a professional setting. 3rd wheel and all that. Terry likely has the heat off to save pennys.

You would think he could hire a barista to make him a good coffee.

And where is Staal? Retired star player giving these kids a pep talk and maybe mentoring a few. Also, evaluating some of their skills. Hanging with his buddy Kevyn, scmoozing with TP.

From now on I'm going to picture Ehlers as the first ever NHL player that takes tampering very seriously.  I just assumed he refused to allow his agent to talk to anyone until 7/1 and that's why he's taking his time here.  Even the scrubs don't last this long in free agency.

Or he's taking the NFL approach of keeping his name in the news as long as possible.

Reality is we haven’t seen this team with Norris on it. Nor with a defense that can actually hold the fort. The transactions on paper might not be splashy, but we aren’t far from hitting critical mass to overcome those issues

I have to say, i do not disagree with you here. We were a good offence last year. Only JJP out and we will have a full year of Norris. If our defense and goaltending was not a sieve last year, they would have been someone better. IF this team actually forechecks and plays a more physical defense and not allow other teams to just walk in our zone with just a stick check, there is a possibility it may not be that bad. The players we brought in is really what this team needed outside of more scoring. Trying to stay somewhat positive and not be miserable.
