(Sneak in because the backup goalie saved the day when the #1 was sick/had issues; and then lose a hard fought final.) 1

Flashsabre Posted May 22 Report Posted May 22 Shanahan officially out in Toronto. Would be nice if they actually inquired like they gave a 💩about the organization.

mjd1001 Posted May 23 Report Posted May 23 I don't think there's much of a chance of Shanahan wanting to come here, or the Sabres wanting him. But it would be interesting. I don't think he'd be the type of guy to come in and just keep things the same...there WOULD be changes. And as for his shortcomings or 'failings' in Toronto...sometimes when a guy is 'good' but not 'great' in their first chance in a role...they learn from that and get better the 2nd time around. 1

He tried to build around his 4 top guys and they wilted in the playoffs. I blame those 4. Not him. 1 1
dudacek Posted May 23 Report Posted May 23 (edited) in Chad's latest Expected Buffalo pod he talked like this a still very much a live thing. His theories are 'It's Dudley and it will be announced after the Panthers are done" followed by "Bergevin, but he's still in the running for the Isles job". He also ran through a bunch of other names but gave the overall impression to me that he doesn't really have a clue what they're thinking. He did raise a good point though: the combine is nearly here, and the draft and free agency are a month or so away, how much of an impact can an advisor hired in June really have on next year's team? Depends upon whether he can convince the GM (or ownership) to make changes at the coaching level, at the strategic level (what style the coaches should be coaching, and that's one thing that having Ruff behind the bench is good for is that he has run several different styles of play depending upon what players he has), and can he help grease the skids to make a trade or FA signing that the GM on his own would not have been able to make. Where he has more say is over changes to the rest of the hockey departments. My understanding is that pretty much all scouts and development coaches have their contracts expire in June and then they reup or move elsewhere in July. THOSE changes don't help much with the current season, but they do set the stage for potential major moves in-season and beyond.

Dudley would just be such a big win for this franchise, and it all makes sense, local guy, could sorta semi retire while still helping in the shadows, his former and local team, I mean and from a professional stand point it would be quite a challenge to see if you can do what you did in Florida with Buffalo 2

Should I go to NYC and actually make decisions or should I go to Buffalo to help potty training their GM? 1

Dudley wouldn’t be coming as an “advisor” he would have to have power in the organization

Interesting quote in there. He has won just 2 playoff series in 11 years. Now, that is 2 more than anyone on the Sabres has won, but not sure if that’s the type of team we want him to build here.
