What, no mention of Drury & Briere?

And their situation also relates directly to Eichel:

They both would’ve stayed for the same deal apparently. Both would’ve been in the neighborhood of 5yr/$25M but Briere got a boatload offer from Philly and Drury left them hanging when Rangers called. Had the Sabres had any foresight, they would’ve had deals done during the season and the franchise’s last decade looks totally different. No tank, no Eichel, no decade of no playoffs. Who knows how long Lindy stays.

But the point still stands…let Eichel go.

And then to avoid further PR damage from them leaving, the Sabres resigned Vanek to a big contract instead of taking 5 1st round picks from Edmonton, which in retrospect would have been the better long term deal.

Hey, now.  Let's not overdramatize things.  It was FOUR first round picks....And most of those were at the top of the draft.  One was our old friend Taylor Hall, who ended up a Sabre anyway and was a huge success with the team.

"Here’s the four players that Edmonton drafted with the picks they would’ve given up: Sam Gagner in 2007, Magnus Paajarvi in 2009 and Taylor Hall in 2010. The 2008 pick was used in a later offer sheet for Dustin Penner."

Drury actually HAD a deal worked out in season w/ Regier.  It languished on Golisano's desk LITERALLY for weeks & by the time Tommy got around to approving the deal, Drury said let's wait until til after the season to finalize it.

And the rest is history.

I wish there was a rationale for not locking up Briere at the same time.

I really don’t want to drudge up old news but as poorly as LQ and TG handled this, they still had a chance to sign both before the draft and acquire another star player but DR talked them out of the trade scenario and they ended up waiting two days before the start of free agency before even approaching Briere and that was only after they realized that Drury might bolt.

That was the correct move. But at the time, people would have stormed Marine Midland Arena (or whatever it was called then, I forget) with torches and pitchforks.

Is that accurate? I thought it was every other year, not consecutive years.
