ALS Ice Bucket Challenge

wtf are you talking about?

The one where I (and several others) called you on your silly comment essentially implying that Millenials have a much greater sense of community than other generations because of essentially having internet wired brains?

This. This is the condescension that makes me love you so much.

How can you stand having digital intercourse with a person so far inferior to your intellect and experience as I am? Truly, you bring a depth to my life that I lack elsewhere. I appreciate your charity, and am deeply grateful for both for the lessons you teach, and the person I hope to one day become under your tutelage.

Oh, Mr. Pot, there appears to be a kettle that would like to have a word with you.

As long as you're willing to recognize your kettle-ness, we can bring this show to a close :)

To be fair, I was mostly paraphrasing Alanis Morissette.

Apparently not everyone because I never heard of this.

Well it certainly swept through these parts and on facebook. Not so much with my group of friends but we had a talk with our son about the fact that we hoped he'd make the right decision if he was challenged by any of his friends ( he's 16 ). The local news had segments about binge drinking at the time in relation to the challenges. But like I said in my post, not everybody.

I just graduated from college and I've never heard of it. Of course, I never needed a challenge to be stupid.

To the point made earlier about NIH funding:

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/matthew-segal/the-ice-bucket-challenge_b_5688100.html

According to Dr. Francis Collins, the director of the National Institutes of Health, his agency has lost 25 percent of its purchasing power over the last decade due to draconian federal budget cuts coupled with inflation. Why does this affect ALS? Because according to the ALS Association, the NIH is the single largest source of ALS research funding in the world. But in 2014, the NIH has seen their funding slashed 5.1 percent, and their total budget is now $30.15 billion, down from $31.2 billion in 2010.

Let's put this another way: A month-long viral social media campaign consisting of billionaires, media moguls, and celebrities alike has raised $13 million, while a seemingly trivial percent cut in NIH funding means billions of dollars.

Oh, but we need to still make tax cuts, right?

Right?

How about the rich (who are, in fact, getting richer every year) pay an equitable share of the tax burden?

Right there with ya, buddy. CV, shrader, and I all work in this area, and I think we can all attest to the negative effects of funding cuts the last decade.

I work in a less popular sector (defense) and we're feeling it, too. It just seems silly with corporate profits up and the wealthiest among us getting even wealthier, that there isn't enough money to go around. I think some of that "gratuitous" wealth should be applied to funding research, infrastructure, education, and most of all, meaningful JOBS.

Right on, comrade.

Ha. A joke. Sort of. Redistribution of wealth is a tricky topic among the electorate. The irony is: Millions of people who get hosed by a system that permits a huge majority of wealth to reside with a tiny fraction of people are the ones who get all "Communism, socialism, hur dur."

That's because the government, cable companies and businesses like Wal-Mart have executed a brilliant plan. Tell people that being dumb and poor is something to be proud of and they'll spend what little money they do have on low quality goods and merchandise for Duck Dynasty. It's brilliant. Widen the income gap and make it cool to be poor!
