When a player is put on LTIR, his salary doesn't count towards the cap, allowing for additions to the team as long as that player is still on reserve.

HOWEVER......there is NO SALARY CAP IN THE PLAYOFFS. This would have allowed Darcy to use Connolly and Afinigenov's cap space to add Gary Roberts and Bill Guerin and as long as Connolly and Afinigenov didn't play in the regular season, you could have fielded Connolly, Afinogenov, Guerin and Roberts in the playoffs.

Afinigenov was diagnosed as possibly being injured INTO the playoffs just days before when Darcy made his PUBLIC statement that both he and Connolly would be back for sure during the regular season.

Connolly had missed a full calander year at that point, and the two combined for a week's worth of regular season games. Yes they did come back, but there was no certainty of it, especially out of the mouth of a GM who takes 15 minutes to decide between ordering in Pizza or Chineese on friday night.

Why was I so sure the team would not sign both Drury AND Briere and was getting flamed for it? Because of that statement. This team knew they needed cheap, young bodies to fill in for the departures. Roberts could have been had for Paille and a 2nd in all likelyhood, and Guerin for Stafford, McArthur and a 1st. No, those aren't deals I know were on the table, but are equal to what they were moved for.

That was the most spineless thing I have seen from a fiduciary standpoint of fielding a winning team I can think of. That's like showing a 3 and 9 at the poker table before anyone has even folded, bet or checked. Darcy should wear that like a Scarlet A....for ######. I never see anyone make mention of this and GR hung up on me when I attempted to make the point at the deadline 2 years ago.

Disgusting.

I secretly knew you were the kinda guy that calls GR.

it would have to be straight up Setoguchi for Rivet. Taking Morrisonn puts them over the cap.

edit: looking at that, there are only about 15-16 teams that could take on Rivet straight up. That team would need to be hurting for some slow defenseman to get him traded there.

Sabres would need to take some dead weight with equal or less cap to get any additional 'good' player from that same team.

I would trade Leopold for Clowe in a heartbeat.

I've called them 3 times in 3 years.

1) On trade deadline to mention this point. I was put on hold for 30 minutes, while on hold the Sabres traded for Dominic Moore, GR hung up on me without getting to talk and 15 seconds after doing so Schopp goes on air, "Oh, where are the people wanting to say how the Sabres don't make any moves at the deadline???" Lines were busy after that....and an hour later the Sabres moved Kotalik in what turned out to be Kotalik for Moore, or....a PP and Shootout specialist for a guy with a broken arm that our crack medical staff couldn't diagnose.

2) To explain why Michael Phelps is such a better athlete than the average olympian. Actually talked about horseracing and the exact same attributes Phelps has to Triple Crown winners and why they can take such a beating (large chest cavity, long length stride, plenty of mass, all equals more efficient oxygen met.), then tied it in to Lindy overworking Miller and why Miller needs to play 60 games a year. Schopp actually was all over this one and let me go a couple minutes.

3) When Bulldog was asking last year why he should be optimistic about the Sabres chances...tell him something he's not seeing to give him hope. I called and said that we were in a division with major international travel destination cities and that we had hope the Swine Flu would overwhelm those cities and the rosters involved. Of course it was tongue in cheek and I didn't make it on.

FWIW...he broke it while on the roster. I saw the slash vs. the Coyotes 15 seats behind the bench. First thing I said when he got to the bench was..."that's broken" ....

Ok...I thought he said in the offseason it was bothering him before that.

It was the slash. It was Mar 6 (I remember because it was a friends birthday) Moore's first game in Buffalo.

He had about 20 points in the 5 weeks prior to the deadline and he was playing great hockey; he wanted a 2.5 million extension from Toronto which the Leafs balked at.

For the RIT students/alumni/fans, thought you'd like this-

Vancouver, B.C. – Vancouver Canucks President & General Manager, Mike Gillis, announced today the recall of defenceman, Chris Tanev from the Manitoba Moose.

Tanev, 21, has recorded nine points (1-8-9) and 16 penalty minutes through 39 games played with Manitoba in his rookie AHL season.

The 6’2”, 199 lbs., native of Toronto, Ontario signed with Vancouver as a free agent on May 31, 2010.

Darcy just closed his Scrabble game with that lady from Japan, fearing someone might pop their head into his office.

So, you see a dead man walking and decide to throw some parting shots? For what purpose?

Kyle Wellwood claimed by San Jose on re-entry waivers.

He signed with the Blues but had to go through waivers on the way back up. Second time this season the Blues lose a guy to re-entry waivers.

Wellwood could have been a cheap, half way decent center on this team at 650k.

I've already seen some decent complaining from Sharks fans about these pickups. Quite honestly, I haven't been able to pay enough attention this year to see whether or not it's warranted.

I don't understand the logic of the waiver system some times. If I'm not mistaken, the lowest team in the standing that submits a claim gets the players, right? So, in theory, why wouldn't the Blues have the right to put in a claim at their current level, which would be below the Sharks. I guess what I'm asking is what's the logic of allowing a team that is higher in the standings to claim a player coming through waivers? Below, I could understand, but above?
