There is no comparison. Literally. The game(s) and players have evolved so much that a comparison can't really be made. The players today are like Steve Austin, Astronaut and the world's first bionic man ... faster and stronger ... compared to the 1970's players. Also, as @Eleven points out the equipment is very different too.

A Duchene signing would smack of the signings during the first FA period after the Pegula's bought the Sabres. None of which worked out. So, I would be very surprised if the Sabres even attempt to sign Duchene, which is not to say they won't.

This is what I think too. And I expect an announcement right around the time when (IF!!) the Sabres are officially eliminated from the playoffs this season ... 8 years / $8.75 AAV. I do not have any more time then it took to look at the score sheet. So, what has happened to the primary scoring? The difference appears to be that the Hawks big 3 brought their 'A' games, while the Sabres big 3 did not. Back in the day I would have loved the point for the tie against the Hawks, but not yesterday. Who's next and when.

My biggest issue with CL is that it is always the same sides in it year after year with few exceptions that are mostly just dumb luck.

In order to win in the NHL your team defense, especially the last line of defense, needs to be stellar. Goals are rare. Each winning team has few scorers, but they are better at preventing goals than the average teams. The Sabres had that during the streak. Many wins were in OT, by 1 goal. Since then they don't. The Sabres are not very sound defensively and when the goalies are not playing lights out the Sabres will lose more often than win. We have seen this recently. The goalies have not played well enough, but overall team defense is not what it was earlier. I'm not sure what the solution is, but they really need to tighten things up defensively. I really think that it comes down to experience and maturity at the NHL level mostly, with some upgrades in talent also welcome. I am not worried about secondary scoring.

I am still much more concerned about the goalers this year, up until the Sabres are eliminated from the playoffs officially, which will likely happen in the final week, or so, of the season.
