North Buffalo Posted 10 hours ago Report Posted 10 hours ago 14 hours ago, msw2112 said: Kesserling was the main piece coming back to the Sabres in the Peterka trade, but Doan is definitely more than just a throw in. For the season so far, Kesserling has not played due to injury, but Doan has been off to a good start. I was curious to see how his stats so far compare to Peterka's: Doan: 6 GP, 2 G, 3 A, 5 points, +1 Peterka: 7 GB, 2 G, 2 A, 4 points, +3 I'm not sure what's more surprising, that Doan has more points so far, in fewer games, or that Peterka has a positive plus/minus! While I have not seen Peterka play for Utah, I can say that he brought less physical play, positive attitude, tenacity, aggressiveness, defensive play, and leadership to the Sabres than Doan now does. Wouldn't it be something, if 1 for 1, Doan turns out to be a better player than Peterka, regardless of what Kesserling does? So far, I'd say that's the case. It's a long season and this is a small sample size, so I don't want to be unrealistic, but I'm interested to hear what others think. I'd also add that even if Peterka's offensive stats turn out to be better, if you take Doan's offensive stats PLUS all of the intangibles he brings to the team, could he be deemed the overall better player anyway? And then add in whatever Kesserling brings to the table, which might be quite a bit. The Sabres could end up winning this trade in a big way. Time will tell. I'm not a huge fan of Adams, but it would be a feather in his cap the Sabres win this trade. I said when the trade went down you guys were going to like him... I watch a lot of late night out west hockey and he was a growing force last year. 1 Quote

I watch a lot of late night out west hockey and he was a growing force last year. I didn’t watch him play before he came to Buffalo. It seems to me that he was a young developing player with them who is now crossing the threshold to being a regular and established NHL player. What I like about him is that in Buffalo he recognized that he had an opportunity to play, and he has seized that opportunity. Another thing I like about him is that he knows what type of player he is (physical and net presence) and stays true to his game. He’s not a floater but rather a hard charger. He was a terrific addition. I’ve been a harsh critic of KA, but in this case he made a team improving hockey deal. 1 1 Quote

JohnC Posted 7 hours ago Report Posted 7 hours ago 6 minutes ago, PromoTheRobot said: So far, so good. When evaluating a trade like this sometimes the stats don’t tell the full story. The added value that Doan adds go beyond the offensive stats. In my view, the Sabres are better and more balanced team with him. And if Kesserling plays up to expectations, this will become a terrific deal for us. And that is not to say that it won’t be a good deal for Utah. 2 Quote
Pimlach Posted 7 hours ago Report Posted 7 hours ago I was happy to see Doan coming to Buffalo. Word out west is that he played with a high motor. Comparables to his Dad’s work ethic and personality were flattering, but can he finish? That is the question. So far in Buffalo he is making things happen and bringing a work ethic to the rink that Buffalo fans want to see. It’s early, but Doan is settling in. Hope the long winter doesn’t bother him, he is a desert kid. Quote
xzy89c1 Posted 7 hours ago Report Posted 7 hours ago We need players like Doan who are high effort guys that play 200 feet. Hopefully his offense can stay consistent. If he is not scoring there is a lot more to his game. Peterka, if he does not score is not contributing anything really. Quote

Quinn has not been good in two of those. He was better last night. Skated much better, and no bad giveaways i noticed. Hopefully, upward trend for him. I was really impressed with Thompson and his work ethic. He is working hard every shift. Playing 200 feet. Being physical in a smart way. Someone talked to him about what he needs to do to make the Olympic team. This is exactly how he needs to play. Exciting to see. The goals will come. 1 Quote

Positively, tell me more. Motor sometimes comes across as "relentless" or "high work rate" but Buffalo needs more. Also Nikita Klepov. We need to draft him. 1 1 Quote

Yeah, Benson has a motor, so does Doan. We need to add more players like this. Maybe Helenius someday? Kozak - I would not call him high motor as in high speed, but he plays smart-motor, he is steady and efficient. When Mike Peca was an Amerks coach he spoke highly of Kozak and thought he had good potential. I think we are seeing that now. Maybe Kozak could project to a 10-12 goal 4C, and one that can shut down the opponent. He looks sturdy and he plays a smart game. He is just 22, but I can see him being a savvy vet someday. His AHL days could be coming to an end and he has to clear waivers to go back to Rochester. It will be interesting when UPL, Greenway, Danforth, and Norris come back. If we keep 3 goalies for awhile what will we do with the excess forwards? Gertie will be waived. Kozak vs Krebs is an interesting decision for Adams. As well as Danforth vs Malenstyn vs Greenway. Is Norris expected to come back this season? I'm aware that he has been injured prone but that was a big loss, especially for Tage. It seemed that last night Tage was playing a lot of solo hockey untethered to the line he was on. Quote

"Motor" means the player has that inner-dog intangible. We need more of it. Through 7 games the Peterka for Doan trade seems to be working, looking forward to seeing what we get from Kesselring. I don't see much in Krebs game that i'd play him over kozak at this point. If the entire roster is healthy I'd envision krebs as an extra skater, Östlund back in rochester, and danforth on waivers. For goalies i'd probably carry 3 for a bit since someones bound to get hurt. Quote

Ellis was good last night and seems like a nice kid, but why would we keep three goalies? Three healthy goalies creates more problems than it solves. I’m down on UPL more than anyone, but we are stuck with him. I could not imagine this GM would trade or waive him, so we thank Colten for his time here, waive him, and hope Lyon stays hot. Quote

I'm not sure when the clock runs out on the 30-day thing with STL - something like they automatically get him and he goes to their AHL affiliate (I'm not 100 percent certain on this rule so someone can feel free to clear it up). Anyone else who claims him after that window has to keep him on their roster, so if you can wait out that period you might be able to send him to Rochester and waive Georgiev if he clears. 2 minutes ago, Pimlach said: I think Norris' timeline was 1 month but I am not sure. He's had jumbly lines since the get-go with benson missing time and Norris being hurt in the first game. I think he might have played center for a game. It's certainly not good enough and he needs to play better though. Quote

Krebs gave us 10 goals, playing a lot on the 4th line last season. He logged 81 games and was +1. I don't dislike Krebs but if Kozak can be 4C then Krebs could be packaged for help somewhere else. When UPLs AHL assignment ends I would carry 3 goalies for awhile just to compare Ellis and UPL. Lyon is the #1 until proven otherwise. Or we waive Ellis and risk losing him to a goalie poor team, of which there are several. Quote

Kozak seems faster, more determined in the forecheck, and more committed to getting to dirty areas. I dont expect tic-tac-toe on the 4th line, and he just seems to have a better direct game than krebs at the moment. Quote
