It's he in for Norris or is he replacing Geertsen?

Don't see anything saying Gerrtsen was waived so

Another stupid addition to the roster this time by Lindy Ruff, Gerrsten

Le sigh. You're welcome, Amerks! You don't get to have your heart-and-soul AHL-level stud veteran in the lineup for opening night. You also don't get Kozak or either Bryson/Johnson because of injuries.

Dunne should've been in the lineup and Geertsen waived to Rochester based on play in the preseason, but they had to keep Ruff happy. Now, you've got 2 fourth line low-minute energy guys at the NHL level instead of one.

I just want to show some more love for Dunne. I do not want him out of the line up if/when injury guys return. He has added a more physical dynamic and brought out physicality in others since being added. This has been missing for years.

Utah game was the first time in I can't remember how long that the Sabres were the physically dominant team. Maybe they play bigger with Geertson around too and maybe Greenway and Doan have changed things. Samuelsson clearly plays bigger this year. All positive signs, but I see Dunne as a catalyst and he has earned his spot.

Samuelsson and Greenway have both been significantly more physical than they've been in past seasons.  Don't know if it's due to Ruff harping on physicality ordue to guys like Doan, Dunne, Timmons, and Benson setting the example and shaming the others into playing more physical.  Probably a bit of both.

Geertsen is getting about 4 mins a game when he plays, he is often a liability.

Dunne can do what Geertsen does and actually play 10+ minutes of much better hockey for you.

Dunne was the better player all preseason (and is the better AHL player, too). If anyone should've been the enforcer type to make the team, it should have been Dunne. And, except maybe his first game this year where he was a bit slow and took a bad penalty, he's been OK.

That said, Greenway's return takes him out of the lineup as soon as the NHL guys return. He's behind Greenway, Malenstyn, Kozak, Krebs, and Danforth for 4th line minutes.

Then, it's a matter of: if Ruff is dead set on Geertsen, then he's the 13/14th forward (depending on 3 goalies) and Dunne gets to go reprise his top-6 role with the Amerks. And if Ruff can be convinced to let his Geertsen go, then Dunne can be 14: but you'll eventually have to waive Kozak or Malenstyn who both bring a ton more to the ice in terms of PK and speed, or to make a trade.

I understand that, but sometimes just having the guy there can make a difference. It's kind of like how big and tough a little kid will act on the playground if his big brother is there beside within earshot. That might seem a silly example, but if you think about it, hockey really isn't that different from kids on a playground.

This can't be! I was told that Geertsen matters and that his toughness was a reason others were tough now. He's the engine of the team! The engine!

Seriously, Ruff needs to waive him.

Ruff felt he needed a goon around. But players like Dunne and Greenway, even Krebs are showing the same willingness to throw down.

Dunne’s foot speed is an issue. He’s was caught on two breakaways before he hit center ice while on the Amerks. It’s going to cost the Sabre defensively at some point.

At some point, you are going to have to let this go.  Some of us got caught up on the moment as the Sabres finally resembled an NHL with camaraderie, toughness and sticking up for one another. It was difficult to figure out why as they only added a few new players so Geertsen was attributed as having an impact.  Clearly, it’s something else.

Hard to say if it was the addition of Doan and Kesselring (who hadn’t played when this revelation occurred) or something we as fans aren’t privy to. This years team is drastically different.  Maybe removing guys who went above and beyond to avoid team toughness exercises, like Peterka.  Hard to say exactly what did it but things are different now. That being said, a week from now they’ll probably get bullied by another team and we all tuck our tails between our legs.

Maybe it’s an attitude of “we need to take it up a notch so that we can get rid of this waste of space”.  Geerston’s contribution to this team is “they can’t get rid of me soon enough”.

Dunne seems like the kind of AHL player that can come up and give you 10 good games before the grind of the NHL becomes reality and trying hard is just not enough to get you through.
