Fill out the Staff

Lindy is HC. Fill out the staff.

I think James Patrick has to be a favourite. Was his assistant in Buffalo and Dallas.  Then left to take over the bench in Kootenay and moved with the franchise to Winnipeg. Didn’t want to move to Wenatchee with the franchise. Coached Krebs, Savoie and Benson and had great success in Winnipeg. Would be a great mentor to Dahlin, Power, Byram etc

Chris Taylor is another interesting name. Was Lindy’s assistant in NJ. What might be dicey is that he was Rochester’s HC and was replaced with Seth Appert.

Seth Appert might be the heir apparent especially if they have another long playoff run. I can see him being groomed under Lindy for a few years.

A couple others that some won’t like to hear are Peca and McKee.

I think Mike Bales is retained as goalie coach. UPL has come on strong and Levi is on the cusp.

If the Leafs lose and clean house Guy Boucher is a great PP coach. Former Sabres coach Bob Woods runs a good PP as well.

Jay Leach- (Kraken) - He helped Charlie Mcavoy/Connor Clifton and Jeremy lauzon become the players they are today although Clifton's a work in progress still.

Mark Recch (Columbus)- I have no clue what type of assitant he was, I'm assuming forwards? It just says senior advisor when he was in Dallas with Ruff and just says assistant coach in Columbus on the staff page but it's never bad to have hall of famers teaching you the ropes.

It's hard to think who would run the power play, all the top teams in the playoffs aside from Boston had the best power plays so I doubt we can poach any of those guys.

I guess there's a possibility that they might want to go somewhere else because a coach with a top powerplay and in the playoffs probably isn't going anywhere so going elsewhere and having a good powerplay again would write their ticket. Even if that were the case, I don't see Ruff making that sort of hire though.

I always liked Scott Stevens as a player.  Would be a pipe dream.

Watched Steven’s play for many years in Washington as a season ticket holder… He would bring a tough, physical mindset to our young D corps… Agree it is a pipe dream.

I think I remember he was upset because Adams fired him over the phone and it was like a 30 second conversation.  It wasn’t very professional or something.

No thanks.  That's why Muel is always hurt.

Muel should be used as a PK specialist and get third pairing minutes time for 5v5. Nothing is guaranteed, but I think changing his minutes from 20-25 a night to 15 would go a long way to helping reduce his injuries. And it’s not like I think that’s a poor utilization for him either. I think that’s to the best benefit of both the team and the player.

Then again, Granato had Thompson blocking shots on the PK, so who knows what Ruff might do or how the team will look.

I keep hearing Peca's name -

Isn't he on staff in NYR?  Would he even be able to come here?

Yes, but his contract might be up this year. Assistant coaching contracts aren’t public information so people are speculating (or hoping in my case) that he might be available.

I think he just signed there last year?  Seems very unlikely he would have been on a 1 year deal.

Everybody that plays the PK should be taking away passing and shooting lanes, and blocking shots.   Thompson did what he should have done.  Injuries happen.

No argument from me, but it’s uncommon around the league to have your goal scoring 1st line center killing penalties because the injury risk from blocking shots.

Not to mention those are minutes that you now do not have to give your high scoring forward at even strength and on the powerplay because Tage is tired.

Agreed.  If you're in the playoffs?  Sure - get your best PK guys out there and leave it on the ice. But he took a puck off his wrist in like what the 10th game?  Missed a bunch of time and probably came back too early, shot suffered all season.

Tage on the PK tells you that Adams failed at roster construction. A key component for a 3rd line player is that you can use them on the PK or PP just like a key component to making the 53 man roster is being useful on special teams. Same concept but Adams decided to build a roster that didn't make any sense and this was the result. He needs to grow up quick because the only excuses left are incompetence.

Agreed. A lot of teams, I think most, will release an assistant from his contract to pursue a promotion.

So if it’s Peca it would be for the “coach in waiting” role @Brawndo referenced them looking at and probably an associate coach title.

Judging by Sabrespace he meets all the right qualifications: you know, warrior, former Sabre 😁

i have no problem with using my top players on the PK. I want the best PKers to play the PK.

Marchand and Bergeron killed for years and the same is true for many other 1st-liners.

Injuries happen in all facets of the game.
