Sabrespace Twitter starter kit

Recommended Posts

This thread feels like a great idea as many fellow Sabrespacers either hate or don't understand how to use social media. Twitter is a GREAT source for information. Many posters, like myself, are quick to post relevant information here... But I'm sure we've got at least a few that would like to view it all for themselves.

So below are some different tips and good follows to kick off your own Twitter account.

TIPS

If you see a Tweet you aren't sure of look for blue "verification" marker and number of followers on account

Check spelling of Twitter handles - fakes will often switch i with l and vice versa or other cheap moves

Will add to this if it picks up and people post other accounts/tips. If you feel comfortable posting your own handle on here I will make another list of Sabrespace Twitter accounts.

Absolutely.  Why the man doesn't have a job at a bigger paper is mind-boggling.

I can think of a bunch of hypothetical reasons why not ....

He doesn't have to sell his journalistic soul to major cooperate greed.

Likes his boss and cooperate structure.

His work hours give him a home life.

Living where he wants.

He's been there done that, and hasn't been happier since he's been there.

He's treated like a human and the person that runs the HR department actually knows his name and face.

Working for a Fortune 500 company is not the epitome of success for a happy life, and conversely, working for a small company is not the epitome of failure.

Hoss, maybe you could put a star by player accounts that are actually worth reading. Just glanced at Eichel's. Nothing there but retweets really.

Well said. Maybe he likes covering the Sabres and doesn't want to go cover the Ducks or whoever. Could be biding his time for a spot at the News.

i struggle too with what you're getting at, the seemingly overwhelming notion that you're a loser in American society if you're not after more, more, more.

Either I didn't make my point clearly or you guys missed it.

I'm perfectly aware that money isn't everything.  I could still be in a much bigger city myself, making much more money.

I'm wondering why he isn't with a paper in Rochester, Syracuse, or Buffalo.  The man is the best hockey writer in the region.  I don't hate Harrington by any means, but why he has the job over Hoppe, I can't understand.

And if Hoppe is biding his time, well, he's got a long wait.

I knew you know. I put it more blunt than necessary. If I put some Irish Whiskey in with my coffee and Bailey's this morning it would have been a bit more kind hearted, but I would fast be a approaching nap time.

But to me personally, Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse is not a step *up*. Sideways at best from Olean (I am partial to small cities with a nice University). NY, Chicago, Atlanta, Miami...soul crushing to me.

That's me personally. And I do really believe he'd need to sell his soul to the TBN. I think they are under a great amount of pressure to keep that paper going.

I'm fairly sure Bill Hoppe lives in the Buffalo metro area.  He's not local to Olean.

I think the point that was missed by eleven (or mybe just glossed over) was Hoppe's comfort with his current employer may be strong enough to keep him writing for a small town rag.

Ironically I wouldn't know. I don't follow many players as I don't care about their tweets much aside from a few exceptions. If they tweet anything important I follow enough people that would retweet it onto my feed.

If you're a casual "Twitterer," though, it's worth following them all. The very occasional tweets they have wont clog your feed and will give you insight into them.

I must be getting old. It used to take a couple of hour long interviews to begin to get some insight into someone. Now it takes 144 characters or less. Not meant to be a slam on you, Hoss, just on the Twitterverse as a whole. If I ever do the Twitter (been thinking about it), I'll definitely use this thread as a reference.

I primarily use twitter for two things:

It's the best way to find food trucks.

Also, @RealTimeWWII tweets World War Two as if it were happening, with several tweets per day.  So today, he's on Dec. 25, 1943.  Tomorrow will be Dec. 26, 1943.  Etc.

Once in a while I'll respond to Howard or Jeremy or d4rk or Josie or something, but really that's it for me.

No way!

WWII tweets?

That may be the needle.

I think I may have been the one to turn Sabrespace onto @RealtimeWWII.  It is a fantastic twitter feed.  There is a similar one for WWI.  I haven't signed up for that one yet.

My usage is similar to Eleven's.  I follow several national NHL writers, the local NHL/Sabres writers, RealtimeWWII, and a couple Sabrespacers.  You can count the number of tweets I write during the year on the fingers of your hands and have fingers left over.  I'm there for quickly getting NHL/Sabres news and that's about it.
