  1. His persona just may go out and light up the All Star game. While everyone else is enjoying the Sunday afternoon skate around the pond, Zemgus just may go out and play his ass off because he doesn't know any other way. I'd love it if he went balls to the wall and won the MVP. GO SABRES!!!
  2. You mean it wasn't obvious? I'm slippin'. GO SABRES!!!
  3. Well deserved by both players. Nice to see them get this kind of recognition. I'm not seeing the gloom, I guess. While I would have given Marrone a third year, it's not like we lost Bill Walsh. Marrone doesn't strike me as a football savant and if we keep our defense intact, I don't think we'll miss a beat moving forward. I look for Whaley to swing for the fences on his coaching hire, too. GO BILLS!!!
  4. Yep. Eichel is gonna fall off a cliff in the upcoming draft. Why, we might even be able to trade down and STILL get him. Tough game for the US. Hard to establish a rhythm, especially early on, when playing short handed so much of the time. I thought we dominated play 5 on 5 but just couldn't capitalize. Oh well, hoping Samson continues to show he's the best player out there in this tourney. GO SABRES!!!
  5. Buddy always talked about that "10-15 year guy" even going back to his days with Butler and the boys. And he would have taken Cam Newton and he realized we were in a dire situation at the position as well. But it was a consensus pick all the way. I give Whaley a TON of credit for doing the totally UN Buddy thing of trading down and parlaying that #8 pick into their highest rated QB and Kiko Alonso. If Buddy were in the Kirk chair, I seriously doubt he trades down. All GMs swing and miss. All of them. But not all of them swing for the fences. I'm glad Whaley has the courage of his conviction in that regard. On a final note, I'll just say that if Pegs really had any previous chats with Cowher, then any concerns he had of Whaley moving forward were erased. GO BILLS!!!
  6. Burning way too much energy killing penalties.
  7. Manuel was a consensus pick, as most are. Nobody has pounded a table for a pick since Jauron demanded Maybin. But if you're asking who was in the Kirk chair for that draft, it was Whaley. He had assumed Nix's responsibilities at the start of the 2012 season for the most part and was defacto GM well before he was officially named after the 2013 draft. This is Manuel's make or break season, he either makes the job his or he doesn't. Year three has always been the "show me" year for NFL draft selections that haven't previously. Too early to just dismiss him at this point and I'd be surprised if they did. I agree with Ink. Watkins was rated the best offensive player in the draft by a wide margin and I'll wager he ends up having the best career of them all by the time it's done. And I say that knowing he doesn't have a great QB to get him the ball as I type this. He's rare player and has been since he entered college where he had an unprecedented career. GO BILLS!!!
  8. It's amazing the correlation between great OCs and great QBs. Amazing, I tell ya. GO BILLS!!!
  9. Would you have been OK with Marrone getting fired and still getting the $4m? People making way too much out of the opt-out clause. Not a big deal at all, especially considering the state of the franchise at the time Marrone signed. Smart of his agent to include it and smart of Overdorf not to object to it when he negotiated Marrone's contract. No way in hell that should have been a show stopper when it came to signing the coach they wanted. There are no villains in this entire scenario. i don't blame Marrone at all for wanting an extension, and I don't blame Pegula for needing to see where we were after Marrone's third year. As for Polian, I take him at his word. There is no doubt the parameters of his task changed with the resignation of Marrone and I respect him for understanding that if he were to bring a new coach in, he would have owed it to that coach to stay. As for the Tim Graham's of the world, they just make it up as they go. NONE of what he tweeted about the situation makes ANY sense from ANY angle. Not one ounce of it. GO BILLS!!!
  10. Agree with everything that's been said here about the game. Now, this may sound silly to others, but Samson was showing these glimpses in his 9 game stint; putting himself and the puck in position but totally lacking the wing support to capitalize. We HAVE to get him wingers with a clue. GO SABRES!!!
  11. What's interesting about Brickley is that when he's doing a Bruins telecast that's being broadcast over another network, his objectivity magically returns. When he's doing a NESN broadcast, he's a total homer. What a lousy standard for a network to adhere to. It diminishes their professionalism. GO SABRES!!!
  12. I think the two questions are getting conflated. What Whaley "should" have done is different than "what did we give away to draft Watkins." It was pretty well established by Whaley himself that he would have chosen Ebron at 9. Now that we know we would have had the 19th pick in the upcoming draft, we have a little more quantification in that regard. It's worth noting that we also had trade down scenarios as well if Ebron was already gone by the time we picked at 9. We would have traded down into the low/mid teens and we would have taken, you guessed it, Beckham. I think the Giants surprised some when they took him at 12 though. I think Zach Martin would have been the choice with Beckham off the board. GO BILLS!!!
  13. I don't know. I was hoping he could man the turret for a few games until Enroth cooled off. GO SABRES!!!
  14. I hear that. Friggen Enroth has turned into some kind of shootout savant. GO SABRES!!!
  15. I'm sold. Nothing about his game I don't like at this juncture. I'm even more impressed with his interview skills. GO SABRES!!!
  16. Depends entirely on the receiver or any other player at any position rated as highly. I'd be willing to wager that in all his years in the game, Whaley saw less than a handful of players with a higher consensus rating in the peronnel community than Watkins. About as blue chip prospect as you can be. GO BILLS!!!
  17. This thread made me laugh out loud. Well done, Bert. GO SABRES!!!
  18. I think Fasching has a lot of jam to his game. I've only seen him play a few college games and now both of these games in the tourney and I can honestly say I've yet to see him take a minute off. He hustles all the time, skates better than I thought, and just seems like a general pain in the ass to play against. I like that in a player. If he develops any kind of scoring touch, it'll be a bonus. I think we made out ok on that trade with the Kings. GO SABRES!!!
  19. I agree with this because now we know what the draft order is on top of already knowing we were slated to take Ebron. It's really that simple: Ebron + the 19th pick in the draft for Sammy Watkins; that's what we gave up. Now we don't know who that pick will be at 19 and what kind of player he'll turn out to be and there are many more chapters to be written for both Ebron's and Watkins' career, so we won't know the full extent of the deal for several years probably. But knowing it was Ebron + the 19th pick gives the trade more shape moving forward. GO BILLS!!!
  20. Excellent take. I think their transition will be helped if they can find wingers that can create space on the ice as well. When I read inkman's updates on the Amerks, I get the sense that Armia is doing this for Grigs in the A already. GO SABRES!!!
  21. I just don't see the value in comparing a bunch of bad QBs. Orton may be the best of the worst, but that's not saying much. I'm not convinced any of those other bad QBs, with the possible exception of Losman and Edwards, left MORE plays on the field than Orton. It's uncanny how our passing schemes frequently had multiple receivers running open only to be totally ignored by Orton. Bottom line is we didn't get good enough QB play to contend and I don't see Orton getting any better at this stage. GO BILLS!!!
  22. That was a terrific year to be sure. That 8 yards per attempt is very telling. The idea that Orton, because he compares "statistically", had as good a year as Kelly, is ridiculous. No sane observer of the game would suggest Orton has been as effective a QB, no matter what the numbers say. Case in point: completion %. Orton may have completed a higher percentage, but don't tell me he is an accurate QB. Accurate QBs have consistent "ball placement" that allows receivers to make a play rather than just make a catch. How about keeping a play alive? Orton can't extend plays to save his life; Kelly knew how to move around in the pocket WITH HIS EYES DOWN FIELD to extend a play. There is simply no comparison to be made on any rational level. There's a difference between passing and quarterbacking. GO BILLS!!!
  23. That's what I meant by "tricky little play" in my post above. Not a bad goal in the shootout, either. GO SABRES!!!
  24. Tricky little play to set up the first goal with a nice pass to Tuch. Controls play most of the time on the ice. Like that he isn't opposed to mixing it up when challenged. He didn't disappoint in the least.
  25. Nice test for USA coming out of the box against the defending champs. This just in: Eichel is good. Fasching skates better than I imagined and is very effective on the PK. Hustles all the time. Didn't see enough of Compher, though. Liked Auston Matthews as well. Only 17 and won't be draft eligible until '16, but I can see why he made the squad over some older players. Larkin has nice wheels as well. Any deal with Detroit needs to include him. GO SABRES!!!
