His first season he had a very bad start, it didn't help that pucks were bouncing off of him and going into the net or that he fell down twice in key situations. In the John Scott interview he said had trouble learning Granato's "system" and playing on the left side with EJ on his right. He played pretty well after a few months and turned around his +/- from something like a -9 to a +12. I was hopeful for him in year two but his performance under Lindy was another mixed bag and his TOI was cut by the end of the season. Adams didn't want to pay out $3.3M for another year of Clifton. It took a 2nd round pick to get out of it. I did like Clifton's toughness and he made no excuses and held himself accountable in the interview. He came to Buffalo thinking he could help them take the next step but they needed (and still need) much more than a 3rd line defender to fix all the team weaknesses.

Rousek went home when his NHL window closed. All good. He played hurt down the stretch and still performed in the playoffs. I don’t know if Jobst or Murray were playing hurt (neither missed any time down the stretch or in the playoffs), but they were both awful in the post season. Murray had eight games, zero points, and a minus six. Woof. Jobst had two points and was a minus four. No points in the Laval series. I think Jobst ran out of gas and while Murray had a good regular season, his playoff was absolutely unacceptable and as usual…allergic to contact. Time to go veteran hunting elsewhere.

Adams is planning ahead. That’s why he is leaving $5 mill on the table this season. He knows he’ll need money to re-sign Tuch, Kesselring, Doan and Benson (assuming everyone has a good season) after this coming season and he wants to be prepared. A good GM would spend the money on one year deals for more help this season, but Adams doesn’t work this way. You dump Bryson and Malenstyn and sign Roslovic and Rutta instead.

I think that's a really good question. Who was the last President that would fit that statement? Even those who seem to have been of good character eventually have their skeletons revealed. I'm not sure the American people have valued character for a long, long time. It's not a surprise to me given the idolatry they've demonstrated.

You just never know. I don't watch the news, there's literally nothing interesting about it. It's either biased or reporting on stuff that will only wear me down on how terrible society is. So, I received a text yesterday morning from a family member asking if my son was okay and safe. I had no idea why he wouldn't be as to the best of my knowledge he was still sleeping in his room. (He was actually still there, until I woke him up at 12:30pm because he had to be somewhere at 1pm. But this post isn't about that.) So I asked why.. and I was sent a link to a person being shot and killed at the Wegman's warehouse in Rochester. This is the same warehouse my son works at and the article said someone in their 20's was shot and killed. Well, my son is in his 20's. He would have been walking out of work at the time the shooting happened, had he not called in sick that day because he wasn't feeling well. Now, from the original article, and certainly the updates this morning, it sounds very targeted. That said, I am thankful my son only has to live with knowing it happened versus being there when it happened. They arrested the alleged shooter in Knoxville, TN. You just never know in this world. I don't dwell on it. I've had a gun put into my chest. It's never of a matter of if we'll die but when we'll die. That said... no one should have to go through these things. They are not things people should have to "process". So, about those Sabres... yeah, can't get worked up over it.

Yep, Rousek signed a two year deal in the Swedish league. I’m not terribly surprised about Murray as he’s been at his ceiling for a while now and management may feel he is blocking other prospects at this point. Same may be true for Jobst as well.

As the old adage about golf goes, it reveals character. People in the NY area, especially, have been well acquainted with Trump’s character for decades now. When you purposely stiff thousands of contractors with the deliberate strategy to not pay them, force them to sue, and then have them settle for amounts less than what you originally contracted to pay them, word gets around. Or when you’ve declared bankruptcy a half dozen times, associate with and have Russian mobsters live in your building, and then shortly thereafter switch to an all cash business model because your credit is shot and banks refuse to issue the loans that you bragged about previously, people take notice. Remember when character was the first trait we sought in a president? It amazes me how our American electorate has changed, but it’s no surprise in the least given the media ownership laws we have here.

Running Connor Clifton’s numbers for another thread really pounded home a misplaced Sabres narrative. There is widespread belief that Bowen Byram is not good because of his numbers away from Dahlin. And while it’s true that Dahlin elevates Byram (and everyone else) what nobody talks about is the drag created by the other guys. Clifton, Bryson and Samuelsson were black holes I doubt anyone but Dahlin could survive. xGF% from this unholy trinity: 36.6, 40.4, 38.9 Actual GF: 36.6, 40.3, 39.3 Out of 270 NHL defencemen, they ranked 259, 231 and 247 Hanging on to Samuelsson was a questionable decision at best and re-signing Bryson is incredibly hard to defend. At least they dumped the worst offender. It will be interesting to see how Timmins and Kesselring affect team numbers, and the individual numbers of Byram and Power or whether they get sucked into a Marty Wilford vortex.

Yes - but Hischier played 21 games in 20-21, and hughes was 19 and had 31 points. In 21-22 they used 7 different goaltenders.

Lots of 3rd pairing d-zone defensemen don’t have great stats. But the telling one is that jump from 1:1 turnover ratio to 1:3. Those extra 40 turnovers destroyed whatever chance at fancy possession stats he had.

Except Hughes and Hischier are both high-pick 1C capable players. The Sabres don’t have that player in their lineup or in their prospect pool. (And when they broke out for a season with Ruff, the Devils blue line was a solid veteran crew with a completely healthy season from Dougie Hamilton.)

Connor Clifton’s game under Lindy didn’t actually change much in terms of counting stats and how he was used. Ice time 16:33 -> 16:03 Points 18 -> 16 Hits 204 -> 208 Takeaways 27 -> 26 Giveaways 24 -> 67 Blocked shots 117 -> 116 Possession 44% -> 40% xGF% 41% -> 36.6% GF% 46% -> 36.6% PK GA/60 8.26 -> 8.08 Penalties drawn -7 -> -11 Analytically, he was an absolute mess. He was terrible in his first year and even worse in his second.

Yeah he should go right next to Ben Bishop and Steven Reinprecht.
