Yes.  And seemingly either a swap of 1st rounders or an additional 2nd rounder for $5.5MM in cap space. 

Been fooled at least twice and counting trade deadline time about 5 times about them planning on using that cap space to improve the team.  When that cap space actually gets used, will believe they are going to use that cap space to improve the team and not 1 second before then.

The trade seemed to have Buffalo receiving less value than Utah received.  

The difference in value of what was going out vs what was coming back in would seem to be ~a 2nd rounder or a swap of top 10 picks.  Something of that level.  Though the Sabres didn't get that, they did end up with about $5.5MM in more salary cap space this season than Utah ended up with.  So, that would seem to be where the Sabres saw the value equalling.

And if Adams uses that extra cap space to help bring in players that can help now or extend say Byram and Tuch or use that and the other $6-10MM other cap space they'll have barring any other significant moves, well awesome.  They should've been using their full cap space every year because cap space is like a fish you caught or a newspaper.  Once it expires, it is expired and worth even less than the expired fish or newspaper is as it is now officially in the ether and doesn't exist in this reality any longer.  You can't even use it for fertilizer or wrapping the next day's catch.

 

But for years now, they've let cap space simply expire.  And until they use this newly found cap space, have no reason to believe they won't just let it expire too.

I'd be over the moon if we'd traded say Rosen and Östlund plus some picks or some other Rochester guy for Kesselring and Doan but for Peterka it's not enough and we create another hole. So maybe if he moves Byram for a true top 6 forward it'll end up an improvement, but that hasn't happened yet.

Makes sense.  Probably miffed about being rejected on Peterka, if there is some team overlap.  He'll get dealt for some sort of forward and a pick is my guess.

I would be fine if they extended him and just stapled him to Dahlin. After yesterday, we would have our top-4 potentially nailed down for several years.

I really hope Adams doesn’t take a weak offer just to trade him.  If the offers are bad, then simply keep him until someone offers the right deal

Both can be true. A lot of teams interested but Sabres aren’t happy with the offers or want a little more.

Agreed fully. I would even give him PP time with Dahlin. Ras is the best passer on the team and has vastly improved his shot. I think it would open up our PP if we put Dahlin on the right wing wall where he would give us a 2nd way to get the puck to Thompson (the cross ice pass).

You hit on a key issue to be watched: i.e. what is done with the added cap space following this trade. Will it be utilized or will it be pocketed? If the hockey operation continues to lag spending wise compared to other franchises, then you know exactly how serious the owner is in running a competitive franchise.

Exactly.  Match the offer and then trade him if you must.  But Adams isn’t looking for draft picks anyways so the draft coming and going doesn’t matter.

One of the Insiders (Dreger?) gave some insight on how the issue with Byram is not really a long-term offer sheet, its about his willingness to walk himself to free agency. Sounds like he may be perfectly happy to sign a one or 2 year deal with Sabres or elsewhere.

What Bo wants most is apparently not money or location, its role and fit, and his willingness to sign a long-term contract is tied to that.

That matters to the Sabres as they consider his future, but it also matters to the team that acquires him and may affect trade offers.

Personally, I'd set the trade bar at the equivalent of the 1st, 2nd 3rd offer sheet level. If someone offers that, or offer sheets him, I take it. If they don't, I give him a 1- or 2-year deal to play on the 1st pair with Ras and see how things play out.
