This stupid event has more pages of conversation than a mid season Sabres game.

Even Promo the Bot is more active than for actual games.

Rigged against Buffalo

The league doesn’t need to bother.  The Sabres are perfectly capable of ineptitude without the assistance.

The theory is the league did it as a make good for hosing them out of the ASG (which the team used access to as a renewal incentive BTW).

(Yes I know it's total nonsense).

Gotta love those conspiracies.

Did Utah jump a full 10 spots by winning the second drawing or did they jump 9? It feels strange that the prize for them would be identical whether they win the first or the second drawing.

And actually, this has me wondering about a different scenario. What if it had been reversed, Utah wins the first drawing and the Islanders the second. Does NYI wind up with 1 overall in that scenario?

Aisles would've gotten the 2nd pick in that scenario.  The Snarks would get pick 1.  The Fighting Mormons get 4 and whoever started out at 2 gets 3.

Athletic's instant mock has the Sabres taking Brady Martin over McQueen, which I think would delight most of us.

Frondell, O'Brien, Mtrka were 6-7-8.

Thoughts?

It's possible. Like 6ish-14ish is roughly interchangeable. Not in reality when it's all send and done but here and now.

I guess it doesn’t matter too much, but I feel like Utah should have moved up one less spot since they didn’t win the first draw. I guess they can’t set it up that way because it could lead to a scenario where both winners are supposed to move up to the same spot (15 wins and moves up to 5, 14 then wins and would also go up to 5th).

Because the NHL doesn't already make things convoluted enough; let's add 1 MORE level of complexity to something that should be really friggin' simple but the NHL CAN'T let things be simple.  Not when there's a possiblilty of making them completely unfollowable.  They aren't there YET (and even with your proposed modification they wouldn't be there, but they'd be heading in that direction) but give 'em time and more ideas like this and they'll get there.

(Not meant for the snark to be directed at you; just the NHL and the stupid Sabres deserve the ire today.)

So you’re saying that you don’t like a system that is anti-tank but still leaves in a bit of pro-tank protection by only allowing the bottom 10 teams to have a shot at the first pick?

It’s a cowardly setup. If you feel the need to create a weighted lottery (which I hate, by the way), have all of the teams involved playing for the same prize.

I like the idea that the team that amasses the most points after being mathematically eliminated from playoffs gets 1OA. 2nd most gets 2OA etc. means every team should have something to play for.

No.  Don't like the system.  It's dumb.  But these rocket surgeons that run the league are going to do whatever they want regardless how dumb it is.

But, that said, making the system even MORE convoluted DOESN'T make it any better.  It just makes it an even bigger embarrassment than it already is.

I think character matters for bpa or the characteristics of how you play.

For example, I value Bear and Martin more than O'Brien even though the latter might score more nhl points.

To your point on defenders, I think 2 will go top 8. I just don't believe we'll see 7 forwards taken after Schaefer.

Highly possible and then I can see Adams not being able to pass up Mrtka's height at 9 thinking there's his Power partner Samuelsson replacement even though in reality Mrtka is (I would guess) 3 years away minimum if you want to develop him properly.

I would be very happy with Bear at 9 but very little in Sabreland makes me happy any more.

No, we've won it twice. Sabres are so inept the league should consider penalizing them for it and not letting them have any more top 10 picks. If you can't win with this number of picks we've had we don't deserve any.

That's what folks used to say about the Eulers.  And then Draisatl fell to them and they won the lottery the next year.   Nearly a decade later with those 2 in their primes, their team is actually pretty good finally.

Ya and I guess that's what Pegula believes as well. Eventually it'll all just fall into place.

I'm just pissed they have no urgency or real desire to win. Giant war chest filled with prospects. Lots of trades you could make and they are just running everything back. Norris instead of Cozens and Levi instead of Reimer and that's it. I guess a Byram trade for who knows what so the D is even thinner. This year Adams will do something good though right? Right.
