Rumor: About Botterill’s Future Being in Doubt

Recommended Posts

I would hope before the Pegulas fire JBot that they have a plan in place and know that they have a GM replacement (and maybe President) who will be an unquestioned upgrade over what we currently have.

It doesn’t matter if they fire JBottom

Did you come up with this nickname?  It's good.  Don't think he'll be around long enough for it to be used on a regular basis.

Yeah that ones mine. Someone said it sounds dirty but my intention was in how his name relates to our spot in the standings. lol

You don't keep someone who is bad at their job just because you can't guarantee the replacement is better.

Man, I don't know if firing Botterill is the right idea, but I don't know if it's the wrong idea either. I'm firmly on the fence.

I think if Krueger wasn't the coach I'd be off the fence. But I like Krueger.

I'm on board with this. I think the Pegulas like Ralph as well, and very few are blaming him for the state of the Sabres. I think ownership will ask any new guy to at least seriously consider keeping the coach.

On the other hand, taking away the new guy's ability to pick his own guy is a bad way to start a relationship.

In my ideal world, the new guy would recognize the obvious flaws of the lineup and will be knowledgeable and connected enough to move decisively to fix them.

This needs to be the case. Terry's not a rookie any more and he doesn't need a six week exhaustive search. They don't have to have their guy already, but they have to have a vetted short list and the desire to move quickly.

Very interesting.  I honestly thought that Botterill would be safe because he had sold Pegula on a slow rebuild.  Obviously that is just a feeling that I’ve had.  We’ll see how this unfolds.

I’m one of those people.  I’ve got no spin.  I thought Botterill would probably be safe, maybe that’s not the case.  We’ll see.  I’m not much of a Botterill apologists.  I liked his overall stated plan when he came on, but the execution has certainly been mixed and the results haven’t been good.

My post was snarkier than I intended it to be. Sorry about that. I just never understood the idea that a GM could be safe in spite of poor results regardless of what the initial plan was, especially when this owner fired a GM for flawlessly executing a plan he sold him on to suffer (Regier).

Meh. Ralph is fine, but I think he's one of countless coaches in the mushy middle of competence. He's utterly replaceable.

Maybe, but I worry less about Ralph, and more about another sweeping rebuild setting the clock back three years again.

There is some value in stability. Just fix what needs to be fixed.

I don't know if I can stomach another season of "... we're giving everybody a clean slate, let's see what we have here..."

We know what we have, and it's a steaming pile of *****.

If they bring in a new GM I want RK gone and all the assistants, Gerard Gallant, a #1 goalie, a #2 goalie, a #3 goalie, a 2C for Risto and Reinhart, move on from all tank roster players, and a president of hockey ops.

I'm looking at this like stream fishing.  Sometimes you're doing everything right, properly equipped and the water conditions are perfect.  On paper everything looks good.  You're anticipating success but nothing is happening.  You know nothing is working and you're wasting time.  No reason to stick around so you cut your losses, pack your ***** up regardless of how much it's a pain in the ass and move to another stream.

Nothing's happening with this team.  We can't stay here banking on hope.   It'll be a pain in the ass and time consuming but it's time to pack up ***** and start over, again.

This is a red herring. A GM change doesn't inherently mean a rebuild.

But is it more likely than not

Not if the job requirement is make this team better by adding the right pieces to the core.  Then there is no expectation of waiting on the owner's part.  Get rid of the feces, and replace it with competent NHL players capable of making the playoffs.

It won't be painless, and is probably a shortsighted approach, but a competent talent evaluatorcan do it.

99% of GMs have that same requirement

Actually they don't. Stevie Y was explicitly told do what you must for as long as it takes but we want cups.  Eliminate cups and the playoffs are not that big of a reach.

Well he's the 1% then
