OT: request for dining/boozing advice in downtown Buffalo

OK, so I'll be in town for the Bills game this weekend with some friends from Baltimore. We're staying at the Doubletree hotel downtown near Roswell. My goal is to have real wings for dinner Sat. night and then go out for a few afterwards, preferably all within walking distance or a short cab ride from the hotel.

I'm thinking Gabriel's Gate for dinner -- I've been there a few times and even though it takes forever the wings are excellent -- but I'm definitely open for suggestions. I'd also be grateful for any suggestions for after-dinner boozing spots.

Also, any thoughts on driving/walking routes that show our fair city in a good light would be great.

Thanks.

Gabriel's Gate really is a great option. Anchor Bar is also right next to Roswell if you're feeling touristy.

They're opening Main to vehicle traffic again, but not yet. Take em down there at night when Shea's is lit up. And definitely show off the area around City Hall.

Not sure of your crowd or such but Stillwater is down there. Its been a little but that place I always liked and they had live music on weekends and it wasn't a dive.

Colter Bay is right on Delaware and Allen. It is more of bar restaurant but they have a bunch of tv's and the Bar is pretty relaxed.

You're spot on with the Gate for wings. I'll leave it to those who haven't been gone for a decade to recommend the best watering holes to hit. The Blue Monk on Elmwood does have an awesome craft beer selection if your crew is into that.

Blue Monk is killer. My friends are also partial to little place called Founding Fathers on Edward between Franklin and Delaware.

I'd do this walking tour...

Love Founding Fathers. Also Buffalo's oldest tavern Ulrich's would be on my list.

I have not been to the Gate in a while, but it remains my go-to for wings.

Anchor Bar gets a lot of grief as a tourist spot, but I find their wings to be consistently very good. (And besides, this is Buffalo, folks -- we could use a few tourist traps -- let's not look down our nose at them.)

Founding Fathers is a great, great call, and not far from where you are staying. I also love Ulrich's -- always an excellent beer selection. I will refrain from offering my own tavern suggestions, as those two are pitch perfect.

EDIT: I will refrain from recommending Cathode Ray on Allen (across from the Gate). The place actually has some really good drink specials (yes I've been in there -- I have a family member and a colleague at work who frequent the place from time to time). Anyway, some years ago, I gleefully recommended the Cathode to a stodgy old summuvablitch who was staying at the Comfort Inn (??) on Delaware for a family wedding. He so had this sort of thing coming to him. When I saw him at the reception, he confirmed for me that he actually had a few sips off of his beer before he realized what I'd done to him.

I won't tell you about the time on was in Buddy's on Elmwood. On Easter Sunday. With my parents. I'll bear those psychological scars until I take my last breath.

I'm not from the area but I always enjoy Pearl Street when I go. Although it sounds like I should be broadening my choices.

Every time I'm in Buffalo lately I seem to find something new to like about it. People are doing things. People are giving the city their love and it's starting to show.

Thnx. While the swamps of Jersey are at least tolerable in the fall, there is no place like WNY this time of year.

This week has been one of those picture perfect fall weeks too. The sun has been warm but the air is just a little cool. Almost time for a Sunday hike around Letchworth.

Ya, it's a nice spot particularily on game nights for the Sabres. Plenty of different brews made onsite. I started going there years ago and they just haven't given me a reason not to go back.

Oh my. That there's a legitimate LOL for me.

How I ended up in such a place on Easter Sunday with my parents is a long and unimportant story. Although, interestingly enough I will say that the day began with brunch at Gabriel's Gate. Ending up in the men's room at Buddy's standing next to my father at a urinal while staring at a wall plastered with pictures of hardcore gay porn is pretty much as bad as it gets.

I experienced a similar situation in Germany once... dingy bathroom in public restaurant, washing hands at sink with my mum when we realized the wallpaper was solid hardcore/kink porn flyers, male, female, and everything in between. Fuzzy handcuff pull chain toilet, too. Would not recommend for Easter Sunday.

I'd also recommend walking through the Hotel Lafayette and stopping at the Pan American Grill for a craft beer or three (they are brewed at Pearl Street). Walking through that lobby is like going back in time.

Absolutely. Plus I'm a sucker for anything to do with Teddy Roosevelt.
