  1. There are a lot of tough things at play here as the child is only 12. They are likely acting on prior experiences which makes it even more difficult. There are no good answers in this situation. As you indicated, you would like your son to go outside alone at some point. This is the one thing you have on your side. Time should allow the investigation to complete and I don't suspect it would take too long overall as it is. So, if you can wait it out while you examine your options, you might end up in a good spot. Bottom line is you are going to have to do whatever you feel is best and it's likely to change from week to week, if not day to day, at least while the investigations are happening.
  2. This is why I refused to live where there was an HOA. I like to think HOA's are the shining exhibit A of why socialism will never work.
  3. I agree, this place would be punch drunk nuts. And in two years, if it goes poorly this place will be back into its normal deep depression. Last season they still did not win. This season they're clearly going for it, but they're going to have to do something pretty amazing to keep this team together after this year. I'm not saying it can't be done, but it won't be easy. If they continue along their merry way this year I could see them trying to offer up Nylander and Horton's contract just to get it off the books. They can sell Nylander somewhat cheap to open up the financial options for them next year. They are a good team. I am not saying otherwise. But they are a good team with a lot of money that will be tied up in only a few players next year. I'm not sure how. Let's assume the Sabres win Thursday. The two teams (not accounting for another Maple Leafs game) would be sitting in the same spot in the standings. On paper they are tied in the standings. They are equal. Which is why I said, on paper. I had already said i think the Leafs are a better team than the Sabres but I wouldn't say their "rebuild" is/was light years ahead.
  4. Right, the idea of this particular hack would be to gather information. It's very much like using human assets as spies. You don't have your spy do any real dirty work unless absolutely necessary. The spy gathers the information to drive other courses of action based on that information. You never want to give up your inside position. Similar to the fact that once you know you have a spy (or hack) in your midst you don't just run out and turn it off and alert your enemy that you found it. You begin by isolating it and then attempt to use that resource against your enemy without their knowledge. While direct action can result in quick change it almost always does so with large scale collateral damage and usually doesn't last long because it results in dramatic change all at once. The subtle, long term, persuasion into the desired state may take longer but it tends to stick because people actually believe it's the best course of action without knowing they were subverted into believing that way. Lemmings readily jump off a cliff when it's time, but if you try to push them too soon, they will resist.
  5. It's also something a person who is in denial about his mental state would do. Accepting it was his poor play would mean he had to begin to accept his feelings as real and not something he could just drink away. I wouldn't call him an a-hole for that. Now, if he continues the trend after cleaning up his act... then tag him and bag him.
  6. I'm aware that you were not an active participant in this round. I recall the statements you've made regarding it. In my post I tried to be careful to not use the word "you" when specifically addressing the acne portion of the personal insults. As for being fat, there are instances where that is a genetic trait, but more often than not it's just really bad life choices. I still wouldn't go around using that as an insult for people. Being bald, a genetic trait, and something I would not use to insult people but bald people can point to the studies that show positives of being bald - https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/the-mating-game/201612/do-women-find-bald-men-be-more-attractive You won't find such an article regarding those with acne. If you do we should probably publicize it more. The bottom line is simple, there's really no need to go around insulting people. There's plenty to critique about Dahlin (and others) without having to resort to insults.
  7. Denial? Did I not say they were the better team in my post? Did I say they were not good? No. What are you pointing out? For all the glory to the Leafs the fact is they are 1 win more than the Sabres right now. Does that put them further ahead on the rebuild? Not on paper. The Leafs will have to shore up their defense to make a run at the Cup. Perhaps they can do that by trading Nylander. The fact remains that they will have 12 players that need contracts next year. Last year they were +6 in GA/GF differential, they are only +3 now. Last year JvR had a good portion of the offense after a whole 4 games. I'll consider the Leafs a threat for the Cup when they can shut down other teams. Right now they can only hope to outgun them.
  8. The logical move is to wait and see what becomes of this situation while watching over your children. At this point it seems to be known that there is an investigation into this particular child and that should lessen any chances of things happening, for now. On the flip side, this is your children's safety and your mental well being that we are talking about and logical sometimes doesn't have a place. Your wife is correct in that it is possible and you are correct that you never know. The biggest thing to consider is whether you may be overly paranoid wherever you move because of what is transpiring in your neighborhood right now. I think a good first step is at least doing your due diligence on what you could reasonably sell your house for and where you want to move and how much that will cost. From there determine if it's more or less viable than you are comfortable with. If it isn't something that isn't viable, what will it take to get there? Removing emotion from it will be tough, but making a rash decision could cause you years of problems you don't want. For now, hopefully it is enough to just watch over your children in your current area and make sure they are safe while investigating your options. I'd like to think I'd follow my own advice in this situation... but I can feel your struggle in my heart when I think about what if it happening in my neighborhood.
  9. Way ahead of Buffalo? Where is Toronto right now if they don't have Tavares but they have Nylander in the lineup? Are they 3-1-0? I doubt it. The Sabres win Thursday and they have the same record as the Leafs. I think the Leafs are a better team, this year, but I don't think they will continue this pace for the year and I am curious where they will be next year when it comes to managing their salaries. They have 12 players on the roster that have expiring contracts and that does not include Nylander and what they do with him. The question regarding the Leafs is sustainability.
  10. Interestingly enough.. this came out today. https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2018-10-09/new-evidence-of-hacked-supermicro-hardware-found-in-u-s-telecom?srnd=premium More details on how the Ethernet ports were modified on the systems that were being sent out. Again... you only ever know about the tip of the iceberg.
  11. I addressed your question in my original statement. Re-read it. However, I guess I also feel the need to expand up on it a bit and address some of your comment directly. "The idea that players need to be protected from comments they will never read." - Well, your head in the sand viewpoint there apparently dismisses all of those late night videos I've seen with players reading "mean tweets". So, never is a bit extreme. The reality is that you believe there is a low probability they will be seen and therefore it's okay to make those kinds of comments. The second thing I want to say boils down simply and tacks onto the first. Everyone has the right to be who they want to be. If you want to be that kind of person, go for it. Just as some feel the need to champion the "Be a ----head" movement, I will be sure to champion the "Be a better person" movement. Perhaps it's lost on deaf ears, but I won't be blamed for a lack of trying. I'm no boy scout either. I've spent more of my years probably being a negative ----head than not. But I'm tired of the negativity and the insults all because of some perception that people won't see it and won't be directly impacted. You can choose to not like my cause as much as I can choose to not like yours.
  12. For what it's worth I would not dismiss what I am saying so easily then. The battle over information control and the use of that information to influence policy and public opinion is mostly never seen by many and certainly not understood by most. If you aren't familiar with the SuperMicro incident the basic premise is that rather than try and hack the systems themselves the manufacturer of a chip that goes onto the motherboard that SuperMicro used in their supplies to companies like Amazon and Apple introduced backdoor that allowed them access to the systems, bypassing the OS, etc. It was found out eventually and stopped, although quite quietly. The recent reports are all based on statements with no hard acknowledgement of it ever happening. Could imagine what would happen to the stock of Amazon or Apple if it was publicly acknowledged their corporate and cloud systems were compromised? My statement was long the same lines that election hacking could be engineered the same way. It seems far-fetched, but in reality, it's not all that difficult to do. A lot of these things are brought about by slowly manipulating the system and guiding it where you want it to go. The "breaches" that we get to hear about on the news are not the same kind of attack nor are they designed for the same purpose. The things that are possible these days is incredible. I'm no longer as knowledgeable as I was in my earlier years but given the growth of the information age I don't see it lessening. Back then, what the public knew as possible and what was really possible were not even close. I would laugh at what was reported in the news or depicted in things like War Games. While certainly accurate they were nothing compared to what I knew was going on and I will readily admit I was only minimally involved with such activities.
  13. Well, rather than expound upon your comment, you decided to just simply talk about his face rather than his hockey ability on a forum dedicated to hockey discussion. This was the second time you had made the comment. Given this, on top of others saying similar things about Dahlin and Eichel, it comes across as more immature picking on people rather than from a place of empathy and understanding for what people go through with it. Your initial commentary then gets piled on by others who look at that opportunity to jump on the bandwagon. Clearly you have an understanding of it. That's excellent. The lecture comes from the additional pile on comments and the repeated nature of the acne attacks that have persisted on the board going back to last year. My apologies for the lecture.
  14. Hank - Have you experience in the field of cybersecurity or any experience with hacking in general?
  15. Clearly morning skates aren't needed though...
  16. I'd rather listen to pi campaign against Housley than see this every post. For what it's worth, Dahlin looks like he suffers from cystic acne. Clearasil wouldn't do a damn thing for him. You can read more about it here: https://www.webmd.com/skin-problems-and-treatments/cystic-acne#1 What you'll love about that form of acne is just how damaging it is to the skin. It's a real treat to have to deal with skin infections that spread and puss up on your face. Having to have them lanced and drained. The insults and "jokes" that get hurled your way even though there isn't a damn thing you can do about it. I am sure being an world-class hockey player helps reduce the impact but for those in life who aren't, the pain of having that condition and not being able to do anything about it really sucks. Oh, no, they have a drug. It's now a generic, but originally was called Accutane. It's a real treat when you take it. You need blood tests every 6 months, you need to stay out of the sun as much as possible, and if that weren't bad enough there's the link to thoughts of depression and suicide. It's a real barrel of joy to deal with when you are 16-18 years old. You should ask someone who went through it... oh wait, no need. I did and I just told you. Perhaps you will all reconsider the jokes, perhaps not. But it's my hope that you are more aware of how some things in this world that you don't think much about, can have an impact on people. Now for the game: I loved it. I hated the shell in the 3rd period. This team isn't built to play defensively and it shows. They need to be in on the forecheck and using their speed. Hopefully that will change as the season goes on but I am sure the staff feel a need to demonstrate wins and so they'll begin to play conservative to try and eek out a game like that rather than continue to play all out and potentially give up those counter-attack goals. There's evidence (visually) that they are still learning how to play together. Quite a few times there were two players in the same spot, some missed passes. The puck certainly seems to be bouncing around a lot as well. Hopefully that settles down. There seemed to be a lot of time in the neutral zone with the puck just bouncing back and forth. Still.. it's a win. Lots of positives, but hopefully the trend continues.
  17. The election hacking, to me, is a serious cause for alarm. It's certainly an avenue that would lead to some kind of voting suspension. If one things about the SuperMicro chip situation it is easy to see how the same kind of program could be worked against the company building the voting machines. It's damn near impossible to protect against chip level backdoor operations. We're likely to see more information on these types of things popping up over the coming years.
  18. Okay... so now I have to really test SDS patience with the nerdiness. MIDI is nothing more than a digital interface to pass numbers to a system to interpret them. This is the "start" of the sound creation process. The MIDI has to be processed into the various instruments assigned to the channels (patches as you called them). There's some magic here as many vendors have their own creations they use. It's not like he picked up a Native Instruments Instrument pack and is playing that. This is Lowrey defined sound and blends. I'm not going to read the full guide on the Lowrey or the Nord but there is in question the number of channels being assigned to instruments as well. Does the Lowrey use acoustic modeling for it's instruments or does it use digital or even samples? Those are where the real questions lie. Ultimately, they are different. They probably COULD sound the same in some instances, but they are different. Just like no patch on Earth is the same as a real Hammond B-3 with the Leslie. His rig is playing over a sound system, but the question there is what sound processing is happening before it gets patched out to the rink audio? Again, sound processors, etc. can be quite proprietary. If they are running it through any kind of internal amp system before being sent to the output then again it's going to sound very different. We can also add that the Rialto is a dual 61 key keyboard with 25 note pedals. This will create far more sound capabilities than the Nord which is an 88-key (I believe, it could just be 61, I didn't pay that much attention). So no matter what you do with the Nord, you can't get the same range of notes in one "press" of the keys (10 fingers, and two feet) that you can with the Rialto.
  19. It's Kids Day at the rink. It's absolutely because kids have off from school and many parents have to take these days off as well (or they are paying for daycare). I had today off anyway, so I'll be watching. Can't wait to see how they come out today... gotta hope for progression.
  20. Over/under on when the 2 term limit for Presidency is rescinded? Now I've done it.
  21. I think you missed what I was saying a bit. The job itself is not going to attract all that many people. It's not a career job with many upward opportunities. You might get a few better people to sign up to sling hot dogs a few nights a week for part of the year, but you'd have to offer a TON of money for that to be financially viable as a career. The price of concessions would be astronomical (compared to where they already are). What you are left with is a portion of the workforce who needs supplemental income or are really desperate for a job. For those who will have pride in how they work you'd see that whether you paid them $10/hr or $20/hr. Those that don't won't suddenly show more pride in their work just because you pay them more. Those have that pride in their work are probably not hanging around there too long unless they get moved out from behind the counter and into a better position. McDonald's could offer $30/hr. But the job itself is a dead-end job and wouldn't necessarily attract people who are looking to be rewarded for their hard work.
  22. It's more than that. It's certainly electronic and as such there will be something missing compared to a full on pipe organ. However, there is a large difference between the proprietary algorithms and sounds used by different manufacturers. That said.. the Lowrey Rialto (which is what he has now) is a full on organ with built in speakers. This is nothing like a Nord Stage 2, which while certainly not a piece of garbage, is going to rely on an external speaker, etc. This in and of itself will vary nature the of the sound.
  23. I think we knew this would happen. They are going to be more open and that's going to result in many more shots. I recall the thread last year that people would rather lose 6-4 than 3-1. This is what we are in for until they can improve their puck possession (and overall defense).
  24. I never grind until I need them. I'll just need to figure out how to grind them more. I think I have a plan to try it.
  25. Sure wish I had warranted an interview for the CIO job a little while back. No resposne. I'm not spiteful... I'm not spiteful.
