Like the moth to a flame I was ready to come back and get burned for this game... then my son's hockey team realized they had ice tonight so I will end up having to miss/listen to parts of the game.... I'm hoping that I should be irritated about that rather than thankful for it.

The right move, despite the impatient fan base's near Vesuvian rage, is to let things play out and stop changing things all the time.

There were people I saw out of line last night, but JJ wasn't one of them. The way I see it, there are a lot of people angry about the Sabres performance. So angry that when a guy they see as only a partial fan makes a suggestion it makes them feel better by attacking him. The classic, "Hey, only I get to question Eichel's value to the team because I am a real fan." syndrome. There are threads about Eichel and what he is as a player all over this place. Seemingly each GDT has questions of whether he's a good fit. But JJ hops in and suggests a trade for a player who has done more for his team than Eichel has for his and people begin losing their mind? Perhaps some reflection is needed...

Ullmark managed to get a shutout against a team that, at that point, had the most anemic offense in the NHL. He'll get another shot this weekend, we'll see how it goes against either the Kings or Ducks. As for fair assessment, this is how it works in the NHL and it's never worked differently. He'll have to prove himself in his limited starts and hope for an opportunity. And yet every coach plays the backup a single game and then goes back to the starter almost every time. This situation is no different.

I don't think it's accurate to say he has not been given a fair shake to start. The organization has evaluated Ullmark since Day 1 of him coming board. They know who he is and what he can do at this moment. He has proven to be quite capable and a player with promise. However, I don't think he's done anything to win a starting job yet and with the way this team is playing it might be better if he's only in the backup role right now. There is a sense, I think, that changes must be made because of where this team is at. I understand why people feel that way. I hope there are a few changes made but I don't think the goaltending situation is where it should happen. I think Hutton is the right goaltender for this team right now.

So far I can say Eichel is doing everything he can so far to try and pull this team along. That’s good to see.

These officials are going to turn this into a penalty fest. Not good for the Sabres PP.

I read the article and am wavering on this being discrimination rather than just marketing. In this article they are talking about recruitment letters and not admissions policies. So, as I read it and took into account the Dean's statement it came across to me that they are targeting groups that might not consider applying because they consider their SAT scores too low for Harvard. It would make sense to have varying ranges by race because there are varying average SAT scores by race. I can understand the argument being reversed to say that they should only recruit using the same cut-offs. I also wonder that if you consider the SAT to show an unnatural race bias if you wouldn't correct against it in your recruitment. For example, if the SAT tends to score African-Americans 250 points lower than Asians and Harvard accepts and recognizes this so they recruit at 250 points lower in their recruitment letters are they not actually equalizing the playing field more than discriminating? Very true. I am glad to know a guy who is all "inner city" and has lived his life in the traditional "hood" way but who is also busting his butt and not giving his kids any excuses to not get educated. He is working his butt off to put them into private school and his oldest just started at University of Rochester. I think he's a great role model on how to break the cycle... but there's no doubt that the hurdles to overcome are significant. I wanted to add on that some percentage of that poverty cycle is self-induced. In some ways people have wanted the quick fix for these poverty problems but the only real fix is to get the kids educated and stabilized so they have a fighting chance. Unfortunately you can't make the kids go to school and you can't make them learn and in some cases kids are being fed lines of garbage about how to deal with the system that is stacked against them. Rather than get educated they are encouraged to seek other means of succeeding in life and this only perpetuates the problems. The discussion of SAT scores applies both the the Harvard standards as it does to a demonstration of education in America. Harvard actually uses other factors than just SAT and that's what is really in question. Your indication was that the spots go to the top 200 applicants and it was asked how that should be determined. The SAT was recommended and thus the discussion of racial bias in SAT scores was born. It's relevant to the thread. These standards that Harvard uses are not going to be very dissimilar to what other institutions use although there may be varying scales and weights.
