I really don’t think it is more common than it used to be, and if I am being honest with myself, I was one of those menaces through much of my 20s.
I spent most of the last 25 yrs commuting 45 min+ on rural roads. I saw what you described frequently. Multiple times Ive had to take evasive action with all 4 wheels on a soft shoulder to avoid a head on collision on a 2 lane 55mph road because someone in too much of a hurry decided to make a pass near a curve, or on a hill. And in my dumber days Ive been the cause of someone else taking evasive action. Not proud of it, but I was that guy sometimes too.
We are all guilty at times of being in our own world, concerned only with what’s directly in front of us. Late for work, or rushing to a commitment, or responding to something in our personal life. And sometimes we are just over aggressive *****. Thankfully the vast majority of us grow out of it, or just plain stop being in a big damn hurry.
