I do not see any current contracts on the Sabres that are likely to go bad due to players aging out. I think the deal Tage Thompson signed ends when he is 31 years old. That is the longest/latest/oldest anyone else is committed to right now on a deal that is any longer than 2 years. I am not advocating for an $80 million dollar, 8 year deal. But If you have to give ONE deal that might be an overpay at the end of it to Tuch right now, you do that so you get the 'good' next 2-4 years out of him.

It is rare you sign a guy who is almost 30 to a long term deal and the end of it is anything but bad. But, almost all teams need to sign guys to those deals to keep them around, you just hope to balance it out with some younger guys on cheaper contract.

Agreed. Hopefully once the new Bills stadium is open, they will look to do something bigger with the Arena. If they wait too long, the thing that will be best for it will be a few thousand sticks of dynamite and a wrecking ball. I don't like the special discount menu for only season ticket holders. Yeah, you want to reward your season ticket holders somehow, but for the rest of fans, you basically telling them "you aren't good enough buy more tickets or we'll get you to pay up in other ways".

To be clear I’m a fan but…the ownership, management and parts of the coaching staff are certainly hated by this fan. When did I say that everything the Sabres did is bad? You are the one creating a false narrative (as it applies to me) to justify your fawning attitude towards a franchise that hasn't made the playoffs in a generation. Certainly, not all criticisms are merited. But that isn't to say that many aren't.

Max length currently is 8 years. They're not scheduled to have it drop to 7 years until next September. BUT they've said they're going to implement some of the provisions of the new CBA on an expeditied schedule. No data on whether the max contract length decreasing (and the regular max dropping to 6 years from the current 7 as well) will be on an expedited schedule or not.

The Habs now have $5.6M in cap space (without even having to wait to put Price on LTIR); the Sabres have $5.1M. Which team is more likely to aggressively go for the playoffs and use that remaining cap this season? Or do they both sit idle until the trade deadline, then make their decision that this isn't the year at that time? Beware the Sharks! The season the Sabres acquired Bishop to reach the floor with $17M in cap space -- they reached 91 points. It's all about the goaltending. 😇

San Jose took an action that it felt was beneficial for them. And it was within the rules. So what is the problem with that and the reason for criticism of what they did? That's the heart of the discussion on this topic. I simply made the point that I have no criticism for the cap maneuver they made that was within the cap rules.

Whether you or I like the rule is not the point. Teams are allowed to buy or sell a contract without gaining the services of the player in order to reach the cap floor. It comes down to a team taking an action that is permissible that it feels is beneficial. So what's the problem with that? People legally/appropriately take tax deductions even when the specific deduction is outdated. Why would you criticize the person who takes the lawful deduction when it is allowed under the tax rules? Everyone is playing under the same rules. Some organizations use them to their advantage more so than others. And when they do they are acting within the established lines.

Right now beggars can't be choosers. If a player wants to sign with us, you take it and let the team worry about a bad contract in 5 years. The max contract length is now 7 years right? If the cap goes up then a max term contract wouldn't be too bad by the time we get there.
