I would love it if the Sabres were in a position to take advantage if that "loophole."

The loophole is scheduled to close in time to ensure Buffalo never had a chance to even consider it.

Except for that pesky little issue where it would require an injury to a star player. Even if they’re coming back, I don’t want to see my team in that spot.

Panthers confirm Barkov’s injury Timeline of 7 to 9 months

Need to get at least 5 points head-to-head with the Panthers this regular season. They'll probably come out of the gates in full "FU, we don't need Barkov or Tkachuk" mode. But you need to be able to beat them when they lose of their best forwards.

They don’t even try to hide it. Yeah, he’s legitimately hurt, but that timeline is so incredibly convenient.

He tore his ACL and MCL. Not sure what they are hiding.

Also not sure how the timing to have their best player tear up his knee is convenient for Florida. I would think there is no convenient time for that.

Not sure he is ready for first round with a timeline like that. Leafs might beat them this year.  If they make it to playoff. Interesting to see what Zitos next move is.

Nah, it's simply not possible for the Leafs to beat any team with Marchand on it 🙂

McDavid, however, might get his cup.

I’m not accusing them of anything. He’ll be back though, these things always find a way of working out.

With Barkov and Tkachuk on LTIR he has cap space to go after some big fish. I don’t think Tkachuk is all year though.

With Tkachuk back they still have over 5milj in cap space. But their prospect pool is weak and they don't have a first rounder until 2028. That's what I find interesting. What can Zito do with nothing when Adams can do little with all assets he's got.

This true if they know Barkov is not coming back for the playoffs If he is they may not have any free space or very little. I don't think they are going to do anything right away. It will take half the season to make a move when the picture becomes more clear.

Who has their 1st this coming draft?  Should the Swamp Cats have 1 or 2 more injuries, that team might've lucked into a top 16 pick when they were expecting to get something between 26 and 32.

Kind of an inverse of when the Sabres traded O'Reilly away.

I think they have too much talent to fall that far. They weather the storm until Tkachuk is back around Christmas and they continue to tread water.

Chicago has the pick in the Seth Jones deal.

Should Bobrovsky have an extended absence, do they have a Lyon to save their bacon again?  Missing your top player all season, your best power forward for nearly half of it, and a world class goalie would be a tough row to hoe.  Especially when you factor in there will be other players missing a game or 2 here or there.

They have Daniil Tarasov as backup. I watched a recap of a preseason game where he played and have to say he looked great.

Well, hopefully should it come to that, and not wishing it on Bobrovsky but should it come to that, am hoping that preseason vs a mix of NHLers and AHLers isn't the same as playing vs NHLers.

If it takes FLA falling off due to injuries to sneak the Sabres into the playoffs, so be it.  Had Fasching not kicked a goal into the net that counted, FLA might very well have missed the dance the year they lost to Vegas.

Would be poetic somehow that their run ends with the Sabres sneaking past them.

I think that’s the one true wild card for them. Goalie is the one position that would cut them off at the knees.
