CallawaySabres Posted May 1, 2006 Report Share Posted May 1, 2006 I just talked to a buddy who has been working on the 3rd phase of the prototype and here is the skinny. He said it is "very unique". It is blue and definitely gold with the tiniest hint of silver. The logo is completely different - "similar to the Bills". There is gold on the underside of the forearm so when the player shoots, that is what you see. He said for the "purists" out there, the red 3rd jersey is out and for 10 games out of the season, they are going to don the identical jerseys of old. That is all I could get out oh him. Most fans want to see the old logo and old colors -- maybe tweak the colors a bit, modernize the accents on the uniforms. But to relegate the old logo to third jersey status or "modernizing" it would be a slap in the face, no offense to your avatar. Given the apparent fan desire for the old look, why not make the old look the new look, and the current look the third look, in other words put the demonic goathead on the third jersey. I feel like Max Afinogenov just stickhandled past me. Dizzy. I wonder if Tom Golisano would make a pledge to never touch the uniforms again as long as he is owner. The money grab once a decade is... a joke. (Apologies to Lindy.) The other possibility is this. The organization realizes that was made sense when Golisano took over the team no longer makes sense, with the team making money and having tremendous success on the ice. The demonic goathead suddenly seems like the right look. So they just scrap the whole thing, and Golly eats the cost, probably substantial, of creating the prototype. You've got to admit, the first 10 years of the demonic goathead have been a lot more entertaining than the last 10 years of the crossed sabres. If it ain't broke... I was all for going back to the old, but switching to a Bills type logo doesn't appeal to me at all. My vote would be to go back to the old logo, and fix the old colors. The gold on the underside of the forearm does sound kind of cool. I wouldn't be against switching to the modernized old logo either. zow2 Posted May 1, 2006 Report Share Posted May 1, 2006 I think it's a nice compromise to bring back the old school uni for 10 games (if that is truly what they intend to do?). That way we get to see it enough to satisfy our need for the old uni, but we don't see it often enough to get stale. As for a new uniform based on the blue & gold....I'm keeping an open mind. I don't like the comparison to the Bills logo (which could use a facelift in itself)....but I would like a modernized version of the blue/gold and something that's unique and different from other teams. I think they should go back to the original, exactly the way it was... or keep what they have... we don't need a fourth, fifth, sixth, logo in our franchise history, we have enough now. and for the record, I don't like this "true gold" color everyone keeps clamoring for... I'm thinking that people want the St. Louis Rams blue and gold, and to be honest, I don't want that. I think it should be our original blue and gold (yellow orangey type) or keep what we have. Rams Uni's are nice... but I think they are trying to be too "new" and they are going to screw up the new look by changing the logo AND the colors at the same time. the outcry was to go back to the old colors and logo, it wasn't for a new logo and new colors that are in the same "family" as the originals. I'm sure it will be nice, but for those of us who want the original back and grew up with the original, it will not be fulfilling for us. Whether it was going back to the old with moderization or something else, it sounds like they are coming up with something in a vacuum in their own little "marketing" world. I often wonder if people in "marketing" actually try and get an idea of what their potential customers want. I'm not too thrilled about the direction they are taking either. I mean there is the old sabres buffalo, and t here is the charging buffalo.... i doubt the sabres new buffalo would have that line going through it, etc. i am sure it is just a charging buffalo that is easier compared to what the bills have than the old sabres logo where the buffalo was suspended in midair. The only thing I would change would be the cirlce logos he has on the shoulders. It's not like we are going to a red white and blue color scheme with the same logo. It will be different. I didn't realize so many hate the Bills logo...I actually like that. I am definitely in favor of a "tweaked" version of the old unis with the rams current color scheme, and maybe an added touch of silver. My problem with black, teal, purple is the "trendiness". I want the old uni. Second choice - the Bisons Pepsi cap. Third - blue & gold with the old logo. We grew up together in Lackawanna and our families have known each other for over 20 years. His designs will never be used by the Buffalo Sabres. Back in 2003 when the petition was going around, we got a lot of buzz from local media (Shredd and Ragan for one) and actually had a meeting with with Larry Quinn. However, almost immediately afterward, John posted the contents of the meeting on billsfanzone.com and other boards. Needless to say, once Quinn got wind of that, phone calls were never returned from Quinn or anyone else at the Sabres. I believe that if John hadn't divulged information on the meeting, the jersey concepts would be reality in the future. That all being said and done. I really don't see how the Bills logo now (the running buffalo), with the exception of the red stripe thru the body, is any different than the running Buffalo on the old Sabres logo. PA, we've had tons of success in black and red. However, I know you and youre a purist. As far as you and I are concerned, the Buffalo Sabres are blue and gold. I wouldn't mind a blue and gold Shatanic goathead (like in my avatar) on the shoulders or as a 3rd, but wouldn't want it as the primary crest. To be honest, I'd really like to see the Sabres keep the current upsweep along the sides and on the arms but in traditional blue and gold (and I like the idea of silver replacing the gray). When the Sabres began contemplating changing the unis to the black and red, they had a LOT of concept unis made up in b&g. I had taken a photo of them, but the picture didn't turn out. #$!$@ film cameras! There were some very nice looking designs in that batch. If they come up with one of those (and several did have piping along the sides and under the arms) or something based off one of those, it would be a hard lawsuit to win. None of those logos were terribly similar to this one if I recall correctly (although they did have some modified versions of the buffalo and crossed swords, I just can't remember exactly what those old designs looked like - it was 10+ years ago).
