What a great man he was.

Quick story epitomizing how down to earth he was:

My son was about 12 and we were on vacation in Siesta Key about 20 years ago. He comes back to our condo and tells me he just spent time with a group of other people in the hot tub and one used to be a hockey player. Son had never heard of him ( yes it was #9) but said he was really cool and talked with him for quite a while about everything and nothing.

When I told my son who he was, and many considered him the best ever, he said to me, "But he was just such a nice guy..."

RIP Mr. Hockey

I've always loved that photo because there's not a single person not watching the game. No Chets or Muffys in that crowd.

But certainly you can spot Chet and Muffy's grandparents. It's also notable that not one fan is wearing any recognizable Sabres or Wings merch.

That was (99% certainly) at the Olympia. (The 1% possibility was it was preseason.) Sabres wore whites in the Aud in the regular season.

Also, that wasn't Gordie's last year in the NHL.

It's being shared as being in The Aud. I would trust that.

Also, correct. Meant to say his final year in Detroit.

This isn't much to base an opinion on, but they just don't look like Buffalo people. And their rapt attention would suggest they were about to erupt had the Wings scored.

long stick with a flat blade, he was ambidextrous so he would switch hands on a breakaway.

The angle of his left hand suggests that's not his stick, but rather the Sabre's. I think the blade of Howe's stick is just poking out in front of his right knee. If I'm wrong, you can pick my avatar for the next three months.

Taro and PA (to a lesser extent - lol) are correct.  I was at the occasional game at the Aud 1970-72.  Home team always wore white back then.

edit--except LA Kings who wore yellow, but home team always wore the lighter jerseys.

It's in Buffalo. The actual photo is from January 7, 1971 "in Buffalo" per the caption of the photo. The Red Wings indeed played at Buffalo that day.

Two other photos from the same game:

I met somebody who played in that game tonight: Don Luce.

One of the two does (as I just noticed) but the first of the extra links says it was in Buffalo. The one that says it was in Detroit still has the date of the Buffalo game, though.

yup.  Wiki's got Wings @ Sabres Jan 7, 1971, but also has Sabres @ Detroit Jan 9, 1971.

Home team was always in lighter jerseys back then.

And this photo, listed as Detroit, appears to be clearly in The Aud:

Thanks for nothing, Getty.

Is that why the Red Wings are wearing Red in PA's photo at home above? :P I know it was more common for teams to wear white at home then (as it should be now, too) but the photos were just labelled wrong apparently.

Wrongly labelled photos, agreed.  The interwebs ain't perfect, especially with past stuff, like from before it (the interwebs) even existed (except in Al Gore's imaginationland).

I was six years old during those 2 games in 1971 and only had one hangover to my name back then.  Away teams never wore white.  I might even have been at that game with Gordie in red.

Scott Bowman remembers Gordie: http://www.wgrz.com/sports/scotty-bowman-on-gordie-howe/239243939

Don Luce: http://www.twcnews.com/nys/buffalo/news/2016/06/11/friends-remember-mr--hockey--gordie-howe.html

WGRZ also had Danny Gare who had a fun story about getting elbowed by "Mr. Elbows" as he called him. Gare and Rene Robert were at Chef's today and gave some thoughts to media on Howe that I imagine will be shared at some point today.
