Bettman is a disgrace and should not appear in ceremonies

You really overestimate Buffalonians threshold for embarrassment. It is much much higher.

Time clouds everyone's memory. Fans need to take a moment and remember how bad things were and how easy and justifiable it would have been for Bettman to let this franchise move.

true, still looked like a ball of slime saying "isn't this the city of brotherly love? "

This is the same city that booed Santa Claus.

Bettman is a fiduciary of the owners. As unsexy as it sounds, hockey in Buffalo was in the owners' best interest.

IMPO, as time passes, so does the memory of no goal. I have no memory of the Vietnam war. My kids have no memory of 9/11. Life marches on. Booing Bettman seems childish.

What better way to represent your city? Booing Bettman says far more about those booing than it does about Bettman. Philadelphia fans have a well deserved reputation as blithering idiots. It didn't matter who the commissioner was, he was going to get booed. I thought Bettman handled it extremely well. He knew exactly what was going to happen, weathered the storm, made a decent joke about it and outlasted the clueless fools.

So, here in a few years, Bettman steps onto the Pegula Sports and Entertainment Arena (the PEE-see) ice to award the Stanley Cup (yes, to the Sabres!)... do the boos rain down? On this night of all nights?

Depends. Did the sabres win the mcD sweeps or get d!cked over the year before with a new lottery format and have to build a winner the hard way?

We would blow his toupee off.

Hairpiece? Hmmm. I dunno. It's a good one.

Although I'd hate to see it, it would be pretty good theater if the ruckus is so loud, he knows he can't be heard, and he just leaves the canned speech behind and waves Peca over to get the Cup.

Morons boo bettman, basically.

How about fans showing some class and not embarrassing their city.

Any Sabre fan that would boo Bettman should be embarrassed.

Booing Bettman seems childish.

Booing Bettman says far more about those booing than it does about Bettman.

I won't.

What the ###### is this ######?? When the ###### did booing Gary Bettman become unpopular?? When other teams' fans started doing it?

Anyone could've managed the growth of the league. Many would have done it better. The massive loss of hockey during the labor strife was avoidable. The expansion of television rights was inevitable. Hockey was never leaving Buffalo. Hockey should have been leaving Atlanta and "Arizona" much sooner, and probably should have never moved there in the first place. With better direction of off-ice officiating, maybe the goal review actually happens the way it was supposed to in '99.

He's a weaseling shithead that deserves to be booed. He should be replaced, but won't be because to the Board of Governors, he's safe, he's not in any legal trouble, and the league revenue is growing.

Never forget who this guy is.

One of the main players in keeping the Buffalo Sabres in Buffalo. That's "who" the man is. The rest of that diatribe is nothing more then petty fan bull$hit that has become far too common place on this board over the years.

Don't you have some other NHL team to go fawn over?

There's some truth to IKnowPhysics's post. The 2005 lockout was avoidable (but the more recent one was a certainty as soon as Fehr was hired by the NHLPA). Teams do not belong in Arizona and Atlanta. The Sabres likely would have stayed here under another commissioner, but I do appreciate Bettman's efforts. Regulation of the game is a joke on and off the ice. The league went for years without a major broadcast partner in the USA, and even the current deal isn't on a top-tier cable network.

It's pretty easy to argue that he has not been good for the game.

As for booing him: It's become a funny tradition.

As for the idea upthread about having a Hall of Famer do the draft: Excellent.

Not with Goodenow having blatently won the prior 2 negotiations and overplaying his hand in 2004. That the owners would get a salary cap was never seriously in doubt to anyone but Goodenow & Chelios. Bettman shares blame for '04-'05, but Bob deserves the lion's share.
