As a young player (13-18 years old) you need to be very very talented AND lucky. You need opportunity, and that opportunity only happens if you happen to know the right people and get necessary breaks to latch onto a program/coach/agent who can get you exposure for the next level. This could be just missing out on a scholarship, or not making a junior team because a spot wasn't open, or your coach didn't know the right people to get you on the national team etc, etc... There's a ton that happens off the ice when deciding who gets to move on to the next level of play.... and much of that involves luck.... is there a spot opening up at your position? injuries? trades, etc.. So much out of the players control that must fall the just the right way in order to get that opportunity to showcase your abilities. For each guy in the NHL there are probably hundreds of players who were at equal ability level when they were younger but just didn't get things to fall their way... maybe they suffered injury? maybe they choose to play for a different team that didn't have success? maybe the coach just liked the other guy a little better because of some previous relationship? I feel lucky that I got the opportunity to play in college. I had a well connected junior coach who knew the right people to get me a look. There were other kids my age who had ability but didn't have the right connections or didn't make the junior team because of an untimely injury, etc... I was fortunate.

J-Bot needs to pick the right coach for this particular core group (ROR, Eichel, Risto, Lehner)... not necessarily whoever the pundits think the best candidate is on paper. Maybe Housley doesn't have enough experience to lead a young core. Maybe Tocchet does, who knows, but one thing is for certain.... J-Bot needs to connect with the players and get a feeling for what kind of HC they need, then conduct his interviews accordingly and hire whoever he determines to be the best match. As fans we just need to trust that he's doing his due diligence on both fronts.

All NHL players need to have some minimum level of ability. However, from my own experience, what you need more than anything is luck.

..and how many of those were actually drafted by PIT/NSH?
-
I have Mittlestadt in my top 4. He's committed to Univ of Minnesota next season. He's going to be a star. He sees the game like Reinhart but he's a plus skater and shooter. Him and Eichel together would be absurd.

I often find myself wondering what moves Murray would've made this off-season if he was still around. Anybody know if he's been interviewed after he was fired?

Amerks coach Dan Lambert let go...now we need 2 coaches!

Maybe. But is was pretty much a foregone conclusion Lambert was gone anyway. -

The problem in Roch is lack of talent, not coaching IMO. They need more Baptiste's and Bailey's, and that can only happen if the talent in Buffalo improves. -
Just curious.... anybody know how many defensemen picked in the first round are on PIT and NASH?

gotta take mittelstadt if hes there at 8. an elite level offensive talent, you don't pass on that just to fill a need on D

Update: Sabres sign D Man Viktor Antipin to 1yr ELC

Trade him to Vegas as part of deal for them to take Moulson off our hands in expansion draft. -
found a link to an official prototype...

I'd be ok with just getting rid of the silver piping, but royal blue would be ideal.

Expectations for Guhle for next season and beyond?
pi2000 replied to GASabresIUFAN's topic in The Aud Club
This is the modern NHL, look at guys like Montour, Chychrun, Hanifin, Ekblad, Provorov, Carlo, etc... this isn't 10 years ago where defensemen take years to develop. Today's game places a premium on defensemen who can skate and Guhle is right there. -

Update: Sabres sign D Man Viktor Antipin to 1yr ELC
pi2000 replied to Brawndo's topic in The Aud Club
Trump didn't get to buy the Bills so he conspired with Putin to derail the Sabres season getting Murray fired, hiring J-Bot and getting his friend Antipin an NHL contract. That's the universe we live in. -
He should've stayed in junior (or SWE), like Reinhart.

Murray also wanted to improve Roch and stressed building a winner, which is something every single GM wants to do, it's nothing revolutionary. The issue with BUF and similar to other bottom feeders is that they're always picking near the top of the draft and those guys end up playing on the big club very early in their careers (straight out of junior/college) because they're talented enough and there isn't any competition for spots. As a result there's a significant talent void in Roch. Teams like ANA, SJ, CHI, etc... have stronger farm teams because A) they're picking near the bottom of the draft and those players need more time to develop and B) there is no room on the big club for those players when they finish their junior/college careers. To create a winner in Roch, BUF needs to improve their talent at the NHL level which means they'll be picking lower in the draft, and they won't need to rush guys up to BUF because of a lack of depth.

Haha, true! ...I find it ironic that I've made 2 or 3 posts complaining of unrelated posts in this thread, when those posts in and of themselves have nothing to do with the thread title. Consider there are infinite parallel...

Apparently she went to some kind of retreat/rehab thing which helped fix her attitude. 1 - The the discussion went completely off topic because of the content of your post... which is a minor annoyance for those of us who come here to read stuff related to the title of the thread. 2 - People were just reacting to your comment... which wouldn't have happened if you didn't make such a biased comment in the first place. 3 - I'll post what I like, and you'll post what I like :)
