Seriously though, what’s the chances of a teenager from the Czech Republic in the year 2025 being a big Goo Goo Dolls fan? Given they announced the pick, it just seems like the Sabres knew this and he was the pick from the very beginning.

Matthew Fairburn Latest Article regarding Terry Pegula and Adams
kas23 replied to Brawndo's topic in The Aud Club
This is true. Owners can win 2 different ways and one is more important than the other. They can maximize the amount of money they make and they can actual win a Cup. Only 1 team wins a Cup each season, so this probably amounts to bragging rights. The real goal is to make money. -
Matthew Fairburn Latest Article regarding Terry Pegula and Adams

If a team like the Sabres are recipients of revenue sharing, at what point does the NHL step in and encourage him to sell the team. The NHL did so with Alex Meruelo and the Coyotes, found him a nice buyer, and eventually tripled his money in less than 5 years. This had a lot to do with the Coyotes not having an NHL arena to play in. But, I wonder if there are any by-laws stipulating revenue generation as requisite for ownership? This is likely why there is a new stadium for the Bills being built. The Sabres revenue growth over the past 10 years must be negative. ChatGPT says the owners must be in the bottom half of revenue, have a small market, the owner must not have too much personal wealth, and lastly, this: Effort to Improve Revenue Teams must also show that ownership is making “best efforts” to increase revenue (e.g., through ticket sales, sponsorships, arena improvements). The NHL can withhold funds if the league believes the team isn’t trying hard enough to improve financially. Would be interesting to see if withholding revenue sharing could lead to an ownership change. -
What also became clear during a Zoom conference call with the owners was their sudden focus on keeping costs in line, with Terry Pegula twice mentioning a need to have an effectively, efficiently and economically run franchise, while adding: “We’re going to get leaner.” https://apnews.com/article/9e7f7c5302fec2382c8046cdfcf39057?utm_source=chatgpt.com Sorry, not sure if Zito would’ve thrived under this. It’s an incredible “what if?” experiment though

ChatGPT on why Terry Pegula fired Jason Botterill: Terry and Kim Pegula dismissed Jason Botterill as Sabres GM on June 16, 2020, citing several key reasons: 🔍 Key Reasons for Botterill’s Firing Philosophical & Communication Breakdown Pegula stated they had "too many differences in opinion" about the direction of the franchise and felt Botterill's vision did not align with theirs going forward Reddit+15NHL+15AP News+15AP News+7WIVB+7Reddit+7. He added, “we felt like we weren’t being heard,” emphasizing that Botterill hadn’t embraced their new efficiency-focused philosophy NHL+5AP News+5Reddit+5. Sharpened Focus on Cost Efficiencies The pandemic forced the team to reevaluate expenses. Terry Pegula emphasized the need to run an "effectively, efficiently and economically" operation, declaring, “We’re going to get leaner”buffalohockeybeat.com+4AP News+4iNFOnews+4. Botterill clashed with ownership over implementing austerity measures—especially across scouting and hockey operations NHL+15Buffalo News+15Reddit+15. Rapid Change of Heart in 3 Weeks Just three weeks after co-owner Kim Pegula publicly said Botterill would remain, a deeper evaluation (especially with the delayed draft) revealed misalignments. Ownership decided that Botterill didn’t match their evolving vision WIVB+1AP News+1Reddit+15NHL+15AP News+15. 📋 Summary In short, Botterill’s dismissal stemmed from a philosophical split with team owners over the bullpen’s hockey vision and strategic approach, compounded by his reluctance to enact the strict cost-cutting measures demanded due to the pandemic. As Pegula noted, it wasn’t just about wins and losses—it was about alignment of vision and operational efficiency. Ownership quickly replaced him with Kevyn Adams, who they felt was more in tune with their vision for a leaner, more collaborative structure Reddit+9AP News+9WIVB+9. But, I agree He wasn’t killing it on the ice. But this isn’t how Terry measures success If you remember, he had given Botts the vote of confidence and said he was he was going to continue 3 weeks before his firing. Then suddenly it was: “We need to make adjustments in the business side of our operations that we provide that foresight to the operation. And we felt like we weren’t being heard,” he added. “I’m not going to sit here and dish on Jason Botterill, but we have a vision and we want to see our vision succeed.” https://apnews.com/article/9e7f7c5302fec2382c8046cdfcf39057?utm_source=chatgpt.com

Matthew Fairburn Latest Article regarding Terry Pegula and Adams
kas23 replied to Brawndo's topic in The Aud Club
You are arguing that he has every right to act this way. I don’t think anyone is suggesting otherwise. He owns the team. Just like Jerry Jones has made himself the Cowboys GM. He has every right. That said, this doesn’t mean it is the correct thing to do when you are looking to have a successful team. Jerry holds his own, but the Browns are an embarrassment. The Sabres record speaks for how well Terry has (or has not) done as POHO. -

I see them as a more of a quality control guy. They are there to give advice and to veto an idea when they think it would cause irreparable harm to the team. Sort of like the parent of a teenager or young adult. That said, Terry is not qualified for this role. Not even remotely. More like, block a decision that would cause harm to his lifestyle. -

There’s nothing to suggest this is even remotely untrue. Just look at the results and decisions. -
He was honest. Given the circumstances (the key here), it was time to move on. I wouldn’t have expected him to say anything different than “I needed a change in scenery.” It’s why we all take new jobs. It wasn’t animosity against the sabres; they allowed him to go back to Sweden mid-Covid season to mourn his father’s passing. They even told him take as much time off as needed. In the end, it’s just the Bruins offered him a better contract and KA wouldn’t budge. I wouldn’t expect him to be forthcoming about the negotiation details that occurred, so he jumped to Boston and said he needed a new start. Not exactly a lie. But probably not the whole reason.

The way that this “rumor” is worded is amusing. It’s so non-committal on so many levels.

The closest thing Byram will ever get is to Dahlin is to be his partner. After his 2 years or up, he can then try to be him on another team. Hopefully, we’ll flip him next offseason when another team thinks he’s Dahlin-lite. But, yes, he wants Dahlin’s position, but failed at it last season. And I also think it’s obvious other teams don’t see him playing a Dahlin-role as well. Otherwise, we would have our king’s ransom.
-
Just sign him and be done with it. Place Byram next to Dahlin. Kesselring next to Power. Timmons can be a 5/6 that can be elevated to top 4 if either of them get injured. And the team still hasn’t addressed the what if Dahlin goes down for 1-2 weeks? We going to go on a new losing streak? At least with Byram and the newcomers, maybe we can go 0.400-0.500 during these games.

Connor Timmins filed for arbitration; Bo Byram did not

If that’s what they believe, then that’s one thing. But, Timmons as a top 4? Really? -

True 4D chess would be to trade Timmons and a 2027 2nd rounder to get JBD back. Except for JBD. Apparently he went to the hearing stage and was awarded an obscene amount of money. Seriously though, this was Adams reason for dumping JBD, yet he traded for a different defenseman who is doing exactly what Kevyn feared JBD would do. -

lol. This is fantastic, especially when Kevyn dumped JBD to avoid this very thing! -
The only Amerk ready to come up is Kulich. Yeah, I know…but there’s no way he would have come up on a playoff team last year. Otherwise, I’m not interested in anyone else coming up save for Levi (if ready, but even him…). Put it this way, if they cannot help us get into the playoffs, they should not be coming up. Many teams play younger players because they need to get under the cap. That’s not us.

I’m fine with not having a lot of Forwards in the pipeline. Do people really think this is an issue? We’ve had a bountiful amount of Forwards in our pipeline over the last 5 years. Where has this done for us? I’m sick of relying on 18 years olds. I’m sick of it not blocking kids. If we don’t have a tool in our toolbox, go out a sign a vet. Otherwise, we have too many young players either currently on the team or trying to gain a spot. -

That’s our Stanley Cup. -
And more recently, JJP. And Kulich was nearly a 2nd rounder, being picked at 28. 2nd rounders are not the garbage people are making them out to be.
-
The question is, is Norris healthy and recovered from his mystery injury of last season? Do we even know what was wrong with him?
-
I don’t want to defend Adams, but he sort of assumed JBD would go through the arbitration route instead of signing the 2 x $900k route. But, still, I believe the Sabres have the right to walk away from any arbitration agreement and he would’ve become a FA. Does going to arbitration cost Terry money? I think he just wanted to leave Buffalo.
-
Definitely. He’s almost certainly considering using Buffalo as leverage to get a bigger contract.
