You won't find anyone who is more in awe of Gretzky's number than me. No one will ever be able to convince me that he wasn't the greatest of all time (whatever that means). But I do think that the best players of today are facing a much more balanced field of contemporaries than Wayne ever did. There are more good hockey players today than there were back then. What's going to make this McEichel thing so special (if they pan out) is that they came in together and will forever be compared (again, if they pan out). Gretzky didn't really have that. Hopefully this thing winds up being like if Gretzky and Lemieux were the same exact age and had entered the league together (and stayed healthy). It would be a great time for the game of hockey. I'd also be curious to see just how different the gap between Gretzky and the next couple guys was compared to Crosby today, percentage-wise, or even something more technical than that. I'd mess around with it if I had the time. I'm looking at this completely blind right now and have no good feel for how it would look. Personally though, I hate all of these comparisons across eras. There are way too many differences for it to have any meaning. I'm at the point where I think that players can only be compared against others from their same time. Everything else is just pointless speculation to me.

Whether that was a man or a woman in that video, it is no different to me (go ahead and watch it, it's tame). Either way, both people are in the wrong. In this day in age where everyone is pushing for equality, these things can be judged selectively. We all need to live by the same standards. And as for the earlier stuff about how we don't quite know how to handle situations where it isn't a man hitting a woman, public opinion is also going to have to figure out how to deal male on male and female on female domestic abuse. I know there's currently a WNBA domestic abuse story out there that most probably aren't even aware of since it isn't a ratings driving scenario.

This whole thing is stupid. Why do we need to generalize all of these situations. It's not ok to hit a woman. It's not ok to hit a man. It's not ok to hit a Luke Adam. It's not ok to hit a robot Richard Simmons. It's not ok to hit anyone.

I've got random thoughts to add but I really do think this whole thing needs to be moved out of this thread.

Right, he's an attention (rhymes with bore). He just wants the media to talk to him a bit, kind of like how he only mentioned himself as a possible suitor of the Bills just to get some positive press. This time he had to actually make it "official" that he is running because it needed to go one step further than last time or else his motives would be too obvious. The backlash at him comments over the last week or so has been a major miscalculation though. That's going to hurt him in the wallet for a little while, but I can't help but think he's got something planned to balance that out, some new tv show or something.

We just need the expansion to happen as soon as possible. Let's get in under the wire before some of these kids are even eligible for the expansion draft.

Those posts are awfully dumb for a guy who is such a media . He does typically know very well how to draw attention to himself. Granted, this whole "campaign" does look to be a major miscalculation so far. I bet he finds away to salvage it in the end though. The margin of error is so razor thin in those games though. I know it's cliche, but a couple bounces go the other way and the results of many of those games change quickly. Just look at that Lions game. They had no business winning that one. I know there were a few others that could have gone either way, both wins and losses, but that's the first one that immediately comes to mind. If I had to guess, I'd put them pretty much right where they were last year. The only way I'd go over 9 wins is if one of the QBs emerges.

Expectations are high among Buffalo fans, but pretty much nowhere else. That really doesn't feel all that different to me than most years. Yes, the feel around the team thanks to the new front office is very new, but the fans are still the exact same to me. They're always the eternal optimists at this time of the year. That's the first time I've ever seen Carolina listed as a team that is really struggling, by a wide margin even. Looking through the last few years of attendance, this was the only weak season. I'd think the league would be far more worried about other situations before theirs.
