  1. That's an odd qualifier to throw out there. Is there some guy who has only played 1 game but scored 8 PP goals??
  2. Technically his head was the primary point of impact, even though he initiated it. That's probably the main reason why we've never heard of a face check before. They don't sound too useful. I don't care what makes my car run, but that doesn't mean I'm going to mock the mechanic if he tells me how to improve my gas mileage. My entire living deals with numbers similar to a lot of these metrics. So me personally, I'm not interested in it when it comes to an entertainment source like hockey. I understand very well how all of it is used, but that has zero impact on my game viewing experience. But those who do want to focus on it? Go ahead, whatever floats your boat. The one thing I can never stop laughing at though is the so called advanced stats that the broadcast has Rob Ray throwing out there from time to time. They're about as advanced as training wheels.
  3. That's way too sunshine and rainbows for me. Saying that this stuff has no place is great, but guess what, it's still out there and it's not going away any time soon. People need to learn how to deal with it. And let's face it, thanks to the internet and the ratings driven 24 hour news cycle, it has been handed far more opportunities to broadcast those beliefs. Even if they draw in just 1 out of every 1000 people who see/read it, these beliefs are never going to be weeded out.
  4. I won't believe that history is repeating itself unless Smith becomes a horrible announcer.
  5. Of course that's not the ideal way to be learning this stuff, but we really need to stop pretending that this is anything close to an ideal world. ***** happens. Hell, what more evidence do you need of that than the fact that I continue to post on this board?
  6. And he's also a first year pro. He has a signficant amount of time left before he even approaches his so called final judgement.
  7. My priorities for this specific scenario, yes. But it can be generalized way beyond that. It's great that she wants it all. Who doesn't? But that's not how life works. It's a crappy life lesson for this girl, but whatever happens, she'll face so many more of these decisions over time.
  8. Only 20? I bet that’s low compared to what most other teams and organizations are doing, sports or any other business out there. The laziness factor though, now that’s funny.
  9. You know, you can use your own words sometimes instead of communicating like a child. But anyway, running cross country is so low on the list of priorities in this story. It might just be dead last on that list. Sure the sport can help, but I’d be far more concerned about having a roof over my head than playing a team sport. Let’s face it, this issue is going to go on for far longer than her cross country season. If this line of thinking makes me obtuse, so be it. And i I realize that others have posted that it’s been resolved with the ncaa. So that’s good for her, but it’s not like it’s all taken care of and everything is rosy for this girls. She’s got a tough road ahead of her.
  10. Call me crazy, but I’d say that having money for living expenses is a little more important than running cross country.
  11. It's amazing the people that show up when you watch through that entire series. Let's see if I remember this one right. Was that the one where Elaine was getting really dumb and George a super genius because neither was getting any sex?
  12. Is it really on the enforcement people though? As LTS said, selective enforcement is a very slippery slope. They really have no choice but to enforce the rules as written. It's the rules themselves which need to be updated. And let's face it, that's not happening any time soon. It seems to me like her best bet if she really needs the money would be if she could convince the school to honor the scholarship. Seeing as how they're a catholic college, I wonder how likely that is.
  13. If the team is making the particular package you're suggesting, it's not for an unknown though. If they're in that trade market, they're targeting specific people, and most likely someone with an established NHL track record. They're the ones doing their homework, not me, and I trust that they've done it. The moves so far suggest that they know what they're looking for. Now if they were to move your hypothetical package for picks or prospects, ok, now you're getting the unknown return. But at this point, the only unknown I see there is what Buffalo would be shipping out. You've merged a few different conversations here, which is fine. I'll just mention that when I say any of this, I'm talking about adding an additional 2nd-3rd line center. I happen to think that could be done at a lower price than what you're suggesting.
  14. The reasons he suggested for not moving anyone were essentially "what if each player and pick pans out". That's exactly why life would be so much easier if we had the poster conversion factor (yes, I know it's BS). Some people have a more rosy outlook when it comes to this stuff. There's nothing wrong with that as long as you realize exactly who the optimists and pessimists are. And yeah, I realize that my point of view may be the most useless of them all, suggesting that there's a price that is right, but not speculating as to what that is.
  15. I'd trade any of them depending on what the return in. That's as far as I'm willing to go though, I'm not going to suggest potential targets. It's not something I have the time and resources to explore. Physics has his conversion factors for what WHL/NCAA/AHL stats would predict at the NHL level. We need similar conversion factors for point predictions from every poster. Yours might be something like 0.8 while someone like freeman would be at 1.5.
  16. You've dug a bit too deeply on this one. I'm not sure how exploring the center trade market has morphed into sending multiple pieces for an O'Reilly clone. I'll give you credit though, you've always been very consistent with the value you place on the team's prospects and picks. I really wish we could quantify this stuff, figure out the success rate of a poster's favorite prospects. I'd call it the Catenacci scale.
  17. "Supposed to" is a big phrase there. That is no guarantee, but even if he does, center is the position where I want more depth than anywhere else. I'll listen to that including defense in that debate, but that's where I fall personally on this one. That extra depth would also allow for Mittelstadt to grow into his role.
  18. The picture they used for Pettersson looks like it was taken in a funhouse mirror.
  19. You can have more than 2.
  20. I was going to get all clever on you and suggest that it was some guy who wore 9 before Howe, but apparently there's no reliable number history prior to that date. Damn you crappy historical records! I do see Sid Abel wearing it at some point (and he's retired as #12), so I'll just say he took the penalty instead. But hey, I did learn that some guy by the name of Mike Eruzione bought the team in 1932 and changed the name to the Red Wings. Why does no one ever mention how damn old he was when he beat the Russians 48 years later?
  21. I was going to say the view was too simplistic and you've covered that answer very quickly here. I don't want too deeply into hypotheticals, but if one of the 1sts was the centerpiece of a deal that brought back a legit #2 center with 2 or 3 years left on his contract, its certainly something most would heavily consider. I'm not sure exactly when the moment will be, but at some point this team is going to have to start adding for now instead of for 304 years from now. That's a place we've all been dying to get to for years now.
  22. Thanks to this, I will forever expect Rodriques to do a sword fight celebration with his stick each time he scores.
  23. Maybe it's just the picture, but the almost 30 years ago version of him doesn't really look all that much younger than the current version. That and he likes yellow shirts.
  24. I'm not going to lose any sleep over it, but at least to me, all the Peterman stuff has been a bit over the top. I've heard comments from a few people, things along the lines of "he's the worst QB I've ever seen", yet they never actually watched a game. It's all a bit pointless.
  25. Completely ignoring the skills competition, which is in no way “essentially true same”. Convenient.
