  1. I got to see a lot of Dalpe while he was in Charlotte. He has decent size, but doesn't really use it. He's a finesse player with good vision on the ice and a nose for the net. It has never translated to success with Carolina or Vancouver, as he seems to blend in the with skill level he's paired with. Two years ago he came out of Carolina camp flying on a line with E Staal (I think Buccigross predicted he'd win the Calder on Staal's line). Once he was bumped off Staal's wing, he disappeared. He played mostly 3rd/4th line minutes in Vancouver and didn't do much. He's dynamite as a top line guy in the AHL, but his skill set just doesn't translate to the 3rd/4th lines of the NHL. I do like the signing though, good for Rochester or as a recall guy, and maybe he can really impress in camp.
  2. According to my sources (http://dropyourgloves.com/Players/Player.aspx?Player=28445), he dropped the gloves 3 times in his two years in the USHL.
  3. It's not that bad. I grew up on that stuff. It happened to be the only pizza sauce my mom could find that didn't have enough garlic in it to put her in bed for a few days (she's highly allergic). I don't think I've had it since I was 15 or 16, and have absolutely no plans to get it anytime soon, but it's not bad. Oh, and my Dad insisted on having sausage on the pizza, so it was always those frozen brown 'n serve breakfast links, cut up in little circles. Gah.
  4. Nothing will happen, but it won't be for lack of effort. I could see landing a mid to late 1st round pick for a bad contract, but that's about it.
  5. 2-1 Dutch, and what could have been a red card against Costa
  6. Just got back from Taco Bell. The browns are dropping.
  7. If the USHL becomes a reality, how would that affect the Jr. Sabres? I think they're owned by the Alumni Association, no? The USHL would be a more prestigious league than the OJHL, but I wonder how easy it would be to switch leagues with that franchise. Either way I can't see HarborCenter supporting both.
  8. Ugh, I've had that song stuck in my head all day. Whoops, wrong thread...
  9. Agreed on Toronto. Easily one of my favorite cities in the world.
  10. I've spent lots of time in NYC and DC and neither comes close to Chicago IMHO. I don't mind NYC for short trips, and I could live in DC, but if given the chance to live in any US major city (without taking into account the cost of living), Chicago would easily be my #1 choice.
  11. TB's problem wasn't goaltending. That's the only reason they did as well as they did this year. It's defense. Hedman is the closest thing they have to a stud defender and many feel he hasn't lived up to his billing. Matt Carle is vastly overpaid for what he provides. Eric Brewer is solid, but is 35 years old, and is turning into more of a pylon than a defensive force. Radko Gudas was the only newcomer on the blue line this season to have an impact, but he had his ups and downs and was a liability some nights (playing too physical taking himself out of the play). The rest of their defensive corps was made up of Sami Salo (39 years old), Mark Barberio, Mike Kostka, Andrej Sustr, Jean-Philippe Cote, Keith Aulie, and Dimitry Korobov. TB will be players in free agency (they have money available), but will look for help on the blueline, not in net, as they only have 4 defensemen signed for 2014-2015 (plus Ohlund on LTIR).
  12. Agreed. I think this is more personal than anything else. Now we can all play "what if" and see if it bites JK in the ass.
  13. Agreed. I think he's slipping, but don't understand the overall rationale. If Klinsmann wants to say he did it to go with youth, then why take Wondolowski over Boyd? Even if, in JK's eyes, Donovan wasn't good enough to be one of the four starting attack options (Dempsey, Altidore, Zusi, Bedoya?) he'd still give opponents something to "fear" coming off the bench. If the US flops (which wouldn't be a shock in the Group of Death) this will come back to haunt him.
  14. Good point. I forgot about the ownership issues on the Island. But wouldn't Miller be perfect for Brooklyn, the emo hipster center of the universe?
  15. The only teams likely to offer Miller what he wants are Washington, NY Islanders, Minnesota (they'd need to buy out Backstrom) or maybe Calgary. I think he ends up in DC.
  16. My 12 year old stepson has been playing soccer most of his life. Since he was 8, he's been encouraged to tryout for one of the competitive travel teams in our area, but it was never possible as my wife couldn't afford it as a single mom. Heck, she could barely afford the cost of signing him up for the spring rec league, and he didn't play in the fall league for that reason. So he played in the spring rec league this year and it was awful. His team was flat out the worst and he was the only one who knew what they were doing. The coach was clueless, and sadly, from the first game to the last, there wasn't an ounce of improvement among the players. He loves soccer, but is bored playing at the rec level. We were encouraged to have him tryout for one of the "classic" (travel) teams in our area to expose him to better coaching and competition. There are two, one we can afford and one we can't. We chose the one we can afford, and after two nights of tryouts were informed that the entire roster from last season's undefeated team was returning, and there were no roster openings. Then why have tryouts? The coach said he did a great job and would love to offer him a roster spot, but couldn't, and said to try one of the teams in Charlotte (it's about 40 minutes from where we live). All the various teams hold tryouts the same days, so we, of course, missed their tryout. I basically begged the closest Charlotte team to offer my son a chance to tryout, and they were very accommodating. Now he has a tryout tomorrow night as part of an informal practice. What sucks is that if he doesn't make it, his only choice is to keep playing rec soccer, which quite frankly, blows. I was cut from three travel hockey teams growing up, so I know how it feels, but at least the coaching in the rec leagues was good enough so I kept progressing as a player and played club in college. I can't say the same for our local rec soccer league. I'm not sure what we'll do if he doesn't make it, and my wife feels like ###### because he didn't/wasn't able to play more competitive soccer years ago.
  17. I thought the Vanek-Desharnais-Pacioretty line was getting heaps of praise during the Tampa series. My how things have changed.
  18. Chi-Chi-Chi Le-Le-Le! CHILE!
  19. That boxscore was from 2011, showing Finland winning 3-2. Here's the correct one: http://stats.iihf.co...7B07_74_4_0.pdf Zemgus did play, but did not factor in the scoring.
  20. I gotta be honest, I've probably had a drink 4 or 5 times in my life (I'm 33). Never been drunk, never had a brownout or black out, and never really enjoyed it anyway. It's just hearing about those stories that kill any desire I have to have a drink. I come from a family that doesn't really enjoy it, so I never grew up around it, but had friends whose parents were alcoholics, and seeing/hearing those stories, plus the effects on my friends when they were drunk just made it so unattractive to me. It's probably been 12 years since I've had one, and continually face ridicule from my boss for not partaking at company events, but I can't say I feel like I'm missing out. I fully realize one drink here and there isn't a big deal, nor will it cause "problems," but I just have no desire to partake.
  21. I've heard great things about bear, but you have to be careful where and when you get it. I know most black bears here in NC are very greasy and taste foul, since their diet depends so much on garbage. The best time to get one is the spring, when their diet depends more on foraging. My brother-in-law got one in the fall a few years back, and it was just awful.
  22. My step-sister's Dad is a total backwoods redneck from small town, no stop light NC. Almost every stereotype you can come up with is true, including that he's a racist illiterate drunk. That said, the man can cook some critters. He makes a mean beaver stew, and loves to catch some "cooters," and fry them up. Yes, beaver and cooter in the same sentence.
  23. Kangaroo is great. I've had it a few different ways, but 'roo fajitas were my personal favorite. Also quite good was a camel steak I had in Dubai. I had donkey in China, and that was pretty gross. Antelope isn't bad either, somewhere between venison and bison, if that makes any sense.
