Chad D: expect a Byram trade at or around the draft
JohnC replied to dudacek's topic in The Aud Club
Sinking ships is this franchise’s speciality. Anyone can float a boat that is in tack. However, it takes creativity to puncture holes in your boat and watch the bubbles going upward while the ship goes downward. Pegula will get in the salvage business and profit from his at bottom carcass. This organizations motto is: strive to fail and improve your draft status. This embarrassing storyline never ends. -
Emotional drivers. We were coming back home from Boston last week and at one point on the Thruway there was a line of vehicles in the right lane going really slow (maybe 10mph under the speed limit, it was led by a slow truck). It took me a while to change lanes to the passing lane, because a lot of people behind me got over there before I could. So I'm patient, wait for an opening, and then when no one is left behind me, I move to the right lane. There was a woman in a small SUV that was WAY behind us, but she had to be going 80-85+ mph. She came up behind me. Now, I'm back up to speed, passing the slow left lane vehicles at a pretty good rate, but this woman starts tailgating us as I'm certainly not going 85, waiving her hands, and eventually she got to the flashing the headlights. I'm not holding up the right lane, I did not come close to cutting her off. I'm passing pretty quickly the 5 or 6 cars and trucks going under the speed limit in the right lane. I just don't want to drive well over 80mph like her, so how does that cause her to act like she does? On a side note, the Mohawk valley visitors center....NY state get your stuff together. The new WNY visitors center on Grand Island has people working there selling food and drinks, a mini-market area called 'taste ny' filled with NY state food and products, a large area to sit in, and clean bathrooms. The Mohawk valley one? Its not that much older, its tiny, it has 3 ev chargers all out of order, bathrooms that haven't been cleaned in a while (when we got there), and their 'taste NY' area is a few vending machines.

He traded an asset for someone who was as useful to the roster as a screen door submarine who he now has to move just over a year later. How is that a "win"? - Today

Needed a new umbrella base, old one was just getting kinda gross and we got a bigger umbrella. I wanted something heavier cuz it is windy. Both lowes and home depot succcccckkkkk. They have a crappy and limited in store selection. The only one weighted enough was absurdly priced. Finally the employee help... I get it you have a smart phone but I can look it up on my phone, so no you doing it isn't helpful. Instead of going and leaving with a stand I got the pleasure of ordering it and now I get to wait 3-5 days which is a weak complaint but you're a giant box store and you only have 3 models, in the entire place, everything else is online? So annoying.

Pulling off 6 trades in one offseason seems unlikely. At least in that Chicago trade we get a Defense back. No idea of Murphy is good or not, didn't watch Chicago at all. -

Why would you think they could get a top 4 defensive D man AND a first for Byram? Good top 4 defensive D men are highly sought after and not way below Byram's offensive D man value. Not good ones. I'm sticking with it. If you truly want to improve the D your trade chip is Norris.

And if Adams isn’t thinking 5his way, he’s even dumber than we thought. If he’s not bringing back better players in trades, he’s filling out his own pink slip. If he trades his existing NHL players for more draft picks, those will be used by his successor, or his successor …

I think I've read on here that he "won" the Eichel trade, and the Reinhart trade, and the Risto trade (actually he probably did win that one), and the Mitts trade and the Cozens trade and he just wins all the trades doesn't he and yet somehow the team doesn't get any better. I think he lost them all (except maybe Risto) (McLeod if Savoie never makes it) -
Stop thinking that way. Sabres have been doing that for 15 years now. That future never gets here because it's always paid for by the present. Yes I agree with that, but I also don't think the current line up is anywhere close to being a playoff team. Without additions it'll be another year of futility and if Tuch leaves or Dahlin wants out it'll go backwards not forwards.

Thing is, AN opposing GM won't be the only one trying to get Byram. And whoever wants him will need to beat EVERYONE ELSE's bid. The fact there'll be a line to try to land him should keep it from being a true fleecing. But Byram will definitely be the best player in the deal so personally fully expect to be displeased with what comes back. (Unless part of the package coming back either becomes Robertson or NEW GOALIE. Would be ok with not getting the best player in this deal if it means the team is ACTUALLY improved beyond simply having guys 1 year closer to their primes of course.) -
They're either coming from Peterka's agent (most likely source) or from someone in a FO of a team that's trying to land him. Since Brandon and the other guy got punted One Buffalo is a fairly tight lipped ship. But that isn't really here or there. There appears to be a big prize actually available (Robertson) and a package centered around Peterka seems like something that would appeal to the Stars and for once we might actually see a trade where the biggest piece comes TO the Sabres not the other way around. The last time that happened was when they grabbed O'Reilly. It's been far too long since it happened. Really like watching Peterka. Will not be happy seeing him go should it come to pass. But Robertson is a very good hockey player today and would be surprised if Peterka FULLY reaches his level. It would be a trade that even if Dallas eventually "wins" the Sabres wouldn't lose because for the 1st 2-3 years at minimum the Sabres would have gotten the best player in the deal. Really want to see Robertson brought in. And 2 1sts and Rosen is NOT going to make that happen. You have to give to get (usually) and Peterka could make it happen.

Oh goodie, another Sam Reinhart special. -
Agree with this on a certain level. But on another level, would say Pegula should never have gone along with the plan (or should never have come up with the plan, if that was in fact the case). The model franchise for the tank, the Pens, particularly the mid-80's version nearly moved. The Pens were very bad and were a serious 3rd place behind the Stealers and the Pirates. (Heck, the Pitt Panthers probably had a bigger following than the Pens.) And even with Super Mario and Jagr and Stevens and Barrasso and Coffey and ... it still took several years to become that SC winning squad and bringing in Ron Francis and Trottier. Should never have tanked. But once the decision was made, AND the decision to do a slow rebuild (the point of getting all those tons of draft picks) was made yes they should've stuck with that piece of the plan (even if they did try to not rival the 70's Caps and early 80's Jets while being historically bad for a Sabres team). But once the decision was made to go for the rapid rebuild, they should've stuck with THAT and not jetisoned O'Reilly. But when the decision was made to recalibrate to having a stud C and a stud D and not a handful of stud Cs, they should've stuck with THAT. But when the decision was made to recalibrate to being on the Dahlin timeline, they should've had somebody that knew how to build a team stick with that one. Guess now we're onto another rapid rebuild phase again, or are we? Wtf knows? Lather, rinse, don't repeat but choose a different brand, lather, rinse, don't repeat but choose a different brand, and so on and so forth.

I wouldn’t offer anything of fair value to Adams if I were an opposing GM. I know that Adams always has a deadline to meet and an owner to appease. -

The return would most likely include defenseman in addition to a first. San Jose-Liljegren and 30th for Byram? Philly- 22 and Cam York? I have a feeling we will be underwhelmed by the return -
Ask yourself where these "rumblings" are coming from. (But don't ask @Pimlach) Are we going to let a player's agent dictate to us? I don't care if JJ doesn't want to be here. We have Peterka's rights until he's a fee agent, which is years away. We decide what to do with him and when.

KA won the trade. -
It does seem that it is the plan to roll the forwards back. I suspect they see a healthy Norris as an addition that has yet to arrive. Peterka, Benson, Kulich, Quinn, and even Krebs, they will be looking for additional levels from. I'm sure they think (I do), that Thompson has a 50 goal season in him Tuch could go off in a contract year. You mentioned that nobody wants to move Benson or Kulich. Benson I get, as he brings a sorely lacking element to the team. He is a rare Sabre capable of dragging others into the fight. Kulich I don't quite get. I like Kulich a lot and am not eager to see him traded; but it seems like an obvious place for an upgrade for a team trying to make the playoffs. Yet, they can't simply trade Kulich++ for a veteran centre, even if such a deal was available, as they would have to move out a contract to make room. There is also the reality that Adams makes on average only 1.4 trades per off-season that involve at least 1 NHL player (that's with including the Wil Butcher trade). If I get on PuckPediaGM and start making trades that individually seem at least possible, they almost always lead to another trade being needed and next thing I know I have mocked 4-6 trades. It's just not realistic. I'm thinking realistic moves are: - Byrum and Quinn to San Jose for Ferrero or Liljegren, Dellandrea (a grittier change of scenery winger) and 30th o/a - Maybe a depth D-man in free agency; it wouldn't surprise me to see them bring Gilbert back - Devils depth winger Nathan Bastian is a UFA; I had read that he was a Ruff favourite - A UFA goalie like Alex Lyon or Dan Vladar - Lafferty waived. I'm not trying to sell this, I just don't see them doing much more.
